[ - ] First baby on the way. Budget will be limited so I can stay home. Are we better off in a 1-bedroom with a washer & dryer or a 2-bedroom without? Tips for living with an infant in a 1-bedroom (plus 2 cats)? TIA 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

2BR. Assuming you mean washer & dryer in the apartment itself? Or do you mean just having one in the building vs. having to travel to a laundromat? [ Reply | More ]

In the apartment itself. It seems like the price difference between a 1BR with W/D and a 1BR without W/D is about $100/month in my area. I figure I will spend at least that much on laundry anyway. In California so we don't have "buildings" but sprawled out complexes where the W/D could be far away. [ Reply | More ]

I live in California, not NYC. I can probably get an older 2BR without W/D for $1300/month. Diaper service is $80/month - just diapers. For $1350 I can get a nice, new 1BR with W/C. [ Reply | More ]

Depends how long you plan to stay. In the short-term, washer and dryer; baby will probably sleep in your room anyway. But eventually that second bedroom will be crucial to your sanity. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't want to do it for more than a year, but it would depend on the apartment layout. For instance, maybe you can transform the dining room into a makeshift nursery? If you don't have a W/D, just make sure you buy a lot of extra onesies, sheets and blankets so you don't need to do so much laundry. [ Reply | More ]

2BR definitely. If anyone visits you after the baby is born, where will they sleep? It will drive you crazy if they sleep on your couch with a baby in your room. And of course you want the baby out of your room eventually, right? Laundry is once a week (maybe twice)- but sleeping arrangements are every night! [ Reply | More ]

I would go for extra bedroom if there's even a chance you might be there more than 2 years. Look for a laundromat that does laundry by the pound/drop off and splurge on that for first 4 mos or so of db's life. Or see if you can find 1 bdrm plus den and w/d. We found a (seattle apt) that was listed as 1 bdrm, but had an office with a stacked w/d. So, a bit more $ than regular 1bdrm, but less than 2 bdrm. My sis had her db in an alcove off her kitchen (e.coast), but that was not great b/c they couldn't even get stuff out of fridge w/o waking him. And couldn't watch tv in adjacent living room, etc. If you find a 1 bdrm with an alcove off of liv/din room, another idea is YOU and DH take alcove (use curtains if you want privacy) and put db in bedrm with door. Add a bed in there and visiting grandmas can bunk w/db. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] MD moms- help! just started my third year of med school, and found out that I am pregnant!! THE TIMING IS OFF OFF OFF. this was NOT supposed to happen!!! I want to be excited (we wanted a baby for a while, but decided to wait a year - til MS4, because third year would be too tough for me). - but I am freaking out about how this will ruin my residency plans and screw up my entire career. can someone please help me get my head on straight? due in February. right in the middle of my neuro rotation. I cant take the year off because frankly we cant afford it, it would make life too complicated. I just need to PASS neurology, its an area i scratched off my potential residency list before starting med school...I just need to pass, no honors or high pass. Someone please tell me this is going to be ok. how do I organize myself? how do I manage? who do I talk to? I dont want to get screwed over. who do i discreetly ask about school policies? I am soo lost. and scared. I have one kid already, was back on my feet 2 weeks later. but 2 weeks is too much time to take off from a rotation! how am I going to do this. ack. so terrified. 19 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Even if it's a a tear or so off schedule, you'll be a doctor someday. It's not the end of life. Think of it this way: there are some women who ache so badly for a child, undergoing fertility treatment after treatment and you get to escape all of that. Secondly, there are people who become doctors in their 40s and 50s so you have an incredible leg up on them. What's a year or two to lose? You won't fall so much behind that you can never go back. You can always find a way to go back. Talk to your advisor. [ Reply | More ]

Don't panic. You can do it. The timing is not bad actually to have a baby "elective" during your fourth year. What about taking a year off between medical school and residency? Try to interview for residency early before you show, or consider taking a year off after med school and interview during 4th year instead (talk to some GOOD advisors before looking into this). Figure out what you want to do quickly. Figuring it out while pg will help you factor in family issues. I waited until all my training was done and then some to have babies, but I know people got through it. Mine wasn't really a choice, it just took me 20 years to find a guy! [ Reply | More ]

attending mom: don't sweat it. Life happens. You're not the first 3rd year student nor are you the last who will be pregnant. You need to finish the required courses before graduation, pretty much as far as any med school is concerned. Tell them as early as know for sure that it's a viable pregnancy, and work with your dean's office on moving your electives around so you can finish on time. Plenty of girls had babies when I was in med school. I waited till residency, but there is no perfect time. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

There is a paper coming out in the NewEngland Journal of Medicine in a few months. From what I heard at a national genetics meeting earlier this year the data suggests that ALL women, regardless of age, should be offered an amnio or CVS in order to have microarray testing done. Microarry testing will pick up many, many abnormalities that standard chromosome analysis would not. I have not been able to read the paper yet as it is not published yet so do not know if any comparision were made to include women who had "good" results from the 1st trimester quad screen ad what the recommendations are for those that are screen negative. What would you use the information for? just to prepare yourself? to line up medical specialty care? to terminate? -- think about that stuff and then you might have a better idea of what you'd be comfortable with. also, the textbook explanations of risk of miscarriage for amnio or cvs are overstated - those figures are decades old and do not reflect the experience of MDs who do lots of amnios each year. op: reasons are a mix of all of the above - I guess more than anything, it is just that it would be nice to know that we've ruled all this stuff out for the major part of pregnancy. what I'm wondering now is whether i should insist on getting one (don't even know if I can), or if the NT is normal, go with the doc's recommendation [ Reply | More ]

That's personal. For me, I prefer diagnostic to screening. NT is a screening test, so it gives you odds. Skipping NT and going straight to CVS for me (I also know I carry a genetic issue). [ Reply | More ]

If you would terminate for the major things amnio tests for, or would specifically request testing for SMA, CF, FX, etc, etc, then maybe go from there? If you wouldn't, it's really a matter of whether it's worth it to you to go thru a test to get the info sooner than after birht. [ Reply | More ]

In case you're checking in - the age 35 is completely arbitrary and meaningless. It's when the odds of a miscarriage from the amnio (according to standardized data, not necessarily NY doctors who do the procedure a ton) are equal to the odds of a baby with Down's. But it's very unlikely your personal value system places exactly equal weight on them. If for example, it was really hard for you to get pregnant, you may be unwilling to risk a miscarriage. OTOH, you may know that you would terminate if you had a baby with Down's. Those would lead to totally different choices. So think about which outcome would be worse for you personally and make your decision that way. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Baby name opinions, pls: I've always planned to name a son after my deceased father, whom I am incredibly close to. My sister named her son that name (it's a classic name, e.g. Alexander), but told me I could always use it too if I had a son, knowing especially the bond I had with my dad. We are close, so now it seems weird for our kids to have the exact same name, so I was thinking of naming him "Alexander" James (after DH and DH's dad) but calling him AJ. Do you think that's tacky? No, I think that's cute. And being of greek descent, i can tell you that in that culture, since all kids are named after grandparents, cousins often have the same names. we actually considered something similar - were going to name a girl (if we had a girl) after a female relative and then use initals as nn. we ended up having a boy and used a different name w same initials and used same nn. So AJ for either say Amanda Jill or Alexander James. [ Reply | More ]

I had a pre-existing back problem with herniations in my lower back. AT 12-13 weeks, my back started to get bad (evidently from the increase in relaxin hormone) and I upped my attendance prenatal pilates and yoga classes. Bad move. The morning after one class I couldn't stand without a cane and back brace. My suggestions are get yourself a pregnancy back brace ASAP. Take it easy on the pilates and yoga, and instead go to see a physical therapist and chiropractor who specialize in prenatal care. I ended up having to be bed-rested for the best part of 10 days, and doing chiropratic 3x/week and PT 2x/week. by 18 weeks I was pretty must back to the way I was before--no cane, and no brace. I am only a small sample - but FWIW I liked babycenter with my first baby for the updates on development each week, and comparing development notes online with people due around your time is great (if you are well off though, I would leave that out... def attracts LMC/WC crowd). However, I made a mistake in meeting up with someone from my birth club (month/year you're due) IRL to try to make friends. It was odd,was a little sad we didn't meet again - but then I read later that she flunked the postpartum psych exam done in NJ. Thought I dodged a bullet. Takeaway is it's like internet dating... never know what you'll get IRL. All that being said - start taking classes ASAP on how to care for baby at the hospital where you'll deliver; ask the pediatrician you'll choose; take prenatal yoga or whatever. Everyone is in your boat the first time around, so most people will be friendly because they want to make that new mom connection, too. GL! [ Reply | More ]

I didn't have a doula so this is just a random musing ... I'd try to figure out how she and DH are going to share roles (or have separate roles?) during the birth. Isn't the whole point of hiring a doula is for her to be with you as a birth coach? I'm a few weeks ahead of you, and my DH wants to be there and involved, but honestly neither of us has seen anyone give birth before. We have no idea what to do! Yes, yes, do what is natural, but experienced doulas have been to hundreds of births and are trained in tricks to assist a woman in labor, such as positions to rotate into, etc. We also wanted her to basically translate what the medical staff is saying, and give us advice, in her opinion, as to whether the doctors and nurses are doing something that is to help them only or to help me (i.e. lay flat, take pitocin, have epidural, etc.). I wouldn't send a doula out of the room to deal with my family. That is not her role. [ Reply | More ]

Who are you using? You didn't talk to her about this stuff when you interviewed her before hiring? Most doulas are also lactation consultants and the post-partum visits are to check on you and the baby, to see if you need any help breastfeeding or with the latch or have any questions about the baby and breastfeeding(I'm sure I will). One post-partum visit will be right after you get home from the hospital, and the second will be about a week later. The two pre-natal visits are prep work for the delivery, where she is going to discuss with you options and what goes on from her point of view, suggest positions for labor and delivery, talk about laboring at your home (mine wants me to labor at home with her for at least 4 to 5 hours before the three of us go to the hospital together (me, DH, her), talk about your birth plan, your willingess or ability to take a variety of pain meds, explain her role, etc. Your pre-natal visits probably won't start until 30-32 weeks for the first and the second at 36 weeks or so. You are overthinking this--you don't need to "make work" for her. She's paid for a very specific, short-time period task. [ Reply | More ]

Have your doula offer advice to DH on how to be an effective coach. You (and he) will want the support that he can give if he is confident. Little things go a long way: do not offer a pregnant women a choice ("Do you want some water?") - give them the water straw. Women in labor can't make decisions from a rational place and when they are asked to decide something like do I want some water? it is sometimes a hard choice. So the coach shoves the straw in their face and if no water is needed a simple head shake is an answer. DH and the doula should decide who will be playing gatekeeper and keeping the right amount of visitors that you are comfortable with in or out. [ Reply | More ]

Mamaroo is very gimmicky. It looked OK in the living room, though. I paid around $200 for the thing, as I recall. [ Reply | More ]

No diaper disposal - gross. Bouncy seat: Fisher Price rainforest (blue light is like baby crack). Don't get a carrier if you're not a carrier person. Bjorn is really bad for their hips after like 2/3 months. Stroller: test drive - don't spend a ton until you figure out what you need. Bugaboo is a huge waste of money because there are better ones for much less. [ Reply | More ]

np- we were big fans, but I understand your point. we are now in suburbs, but our city life was primarily focused on walking distance to our apartment, so we appreciated that peg had extra plush lining, etc, which our son seemed to like (somewhat particular even then). but folding it and getting it in and out of cabs or buses was a bit tricky for me (I am petite and admittedly weak), although my dh had literally no problem with it. Giggle is awesome for this. They screen everything and then only sell a few of each kind of item. It's stupid expensive, but so easy. CHeck out a store or go to giggle.com if you're not in NYC. [ Reply | More ]

The big strollers are only for walking, but you need them because the park and the uneven sidewalks suck for umbrella strollers and snap n go's. [ Reply | More ]

We used pouch & then ergo for public transport, bug for walks. Intended to get umbrella but db was small and didnt need it. You can't put a newborn in an umbrella anyway, so, even if you're sure you won't use a carrier, there's no rush to buy one. You'll have an idea whether you'll want super light or one that's got more going on--like a basket--after db arrives. Plus, there's always new gear. [ Reply | More ]

You just need 1 to start. You don't need a snap n go. Just get a nice stroller (citi mini, bugaboo, etc), but make sure it has car seat attachment. Then much later (10 months), you'll need an umbrella stroller. [ Reply | More ]

You only need one. Don't get a newborn one - it's MUCH easier to carry a little baby than push him in a stroller. Just get one foldable stroller for when the DB is big enough to sit up. I like the Maclaren techno because you can recline it (so the DB can take naps in it while you're out). [ Reply | More ]
