[ - ] I am just about 8 weeks pregnant with my second DC, and am currently 34. Do you feel this is a logical plan? 1) usual genetic screening & Nuchal 2) If either come out bad - CVS? The first time around, I just did the blood screening and nothing more, but I'm more cautious this time because I am older. 40 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think that is a good plan. I am older and that's exactly what I did. NT scan then depending on results CVS or Amnio. You are young so odds are on your side but I know I would need the diagnostic test to rule anything out. NT is just a screening. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Yes, I'm hoping is the tests come back like they did with my DS, then a CVS would be pointless. Just tossing the Nuchal in there because I know I'll need to decide soon and figured it made more sense this time around. I'd hate to get the CVS unless there was a real reason. [ Reply | More ]

I had amnio after a very good NT scan, which basically said it's extremely unlikely to have problems. But I still chose to do amnio to be 100% sure, my OB also recommended it, because nuchal is not 100% guaranteed, while amnio is. [ Reply | More ]

Will you be 35 at the birth? If so, you'll be offered a lot more testing than you would be if you'll only be 34. I just turned 35 and am 10 weeks pregnant with our fourth. Never had much testing before. But I've been offered Panorama (same as Materni21 but apparently 100% accurate as opposed to 99% accurate), and I'll do that at 11 weeks. I don't plan to do CVS or amnio. [ Reply | More ]

you can do CVS as early as nuchal so if you're going to do cvs, then just do it. otherwise, you can do nuchal and then if results are borderline, amnio. [ Reply | More ]

OP: So, it wouldn't be possible to do Nuchal, then if the results aren't great, the CVS? I'm honestly trying to avoid anything invasive...within reason. I was hoping there would be enough time. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I know it's just....I'd want to have the information before things go any farther, if that makes sense? So, I'd only do the CVS is there is true reason. But it sounds like I could get one of the newer blood screens and that may even be enough. I see my OB tomorrow so hopefully there is enough time for everything. [ Reply | More ]

My understanding is the blood tests only test for DS, trisomy, 13, and trisomy 18. CVS tests for much more. There are thousands of potential chromosonal issues. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's a fair question to OP. If she is firm about terminating in case of any abnormalities, then testing is very important for her, but if she will carry to term no matter what, then regular screening like nuchal will be more than enough, no need for any invasive tests and no need to spend extra money for any fancy blood tests either. OP: Thanks - I certainly will be. But as I suspected, there are new tests out there since 2009, and I am more concerned. I'm not interested in CVS if I have results that say 1000:1 chance or whatever, you know? [ Reply | More ]

^ That was not me, but I did write the first comment. I am a nanny for a family who have no choice but to work and while they spend as much time with DC as they can at the weekend - I am that child's primary carer and I am the person dc called mama as a toddler. DC knows now that I am not mom, but make no mistake that DC punishes mom for not being there. I don't say this to be judgmental - plenty of women on here have to work. I'm saying nothing will compare to mom to your db & if you don't have to work - I would not. [ Reply | More ]

I did both. Stayed home 6 months, went back to work for 7 months more (part time), then was home for another year after that. You won't really know until you try it. Working part time can be really hard depending on your job. I found that it was as much stress as full time with less money much more to juggle. Ultimately I started my own business and that has been working for me. Gives me flexibility while getting me some $ and time with the kids. [ Reply | More ]

I never thought I could stay home. I am entering the fifth year (two DC) and enjoying it. It is isolating initially, partly because we moved to NYC from other places before first DC. Now I can't image working and coming home to take care of two children. I took up some new hobbies too. If financially you can afford it, I would say you at least can try. I tried to pitch that softly when I came back from my 12wks but it didn't go over terribly well. So I wound up taking random friday's off with vacation days so it made my weeks feel shorter. I think the longer you're fully gone out of the office the worse it looks. But really depends on how family friendly of an industry. For example I'm in finance and would not be pitching the extra 3 wks off if returning in November which is nearing bonus season. [ Reply | More ]

I also think that's hard in advance because they might be worrying you won't come back after the extended time. It shouldn't be this way but I think it is. Mt Sinai isn't hard to get to from Brooklyn, it's a straight shot up the FDR. (Much easier than SLR, for example.) Do you have any experience with any of the other Dr's in that practice? He's great! I met Tang only once, she seemed nice as well, I think they're all good. No, not able to hold baby on chest right away but it was all very pleasant. They quickly checked DB and then wrapped her and handed her to DH. They handed DB to me for BF once I was in the recovery room - it seemed rather quick, but I honestly don't remember how much time there was in between. They are pretty adamant about BF and will help you with that. You can choose whether to have DB next to you in the room or not. If not, they roll them in to your room whenever they need to BF. I had one unplanned Emergency C and 2 planned C's at Cornell. 3 healthy babies and a really good experience. I would highly recommend. [ Reply | More ]

Choose based on OB practice, not the hospital. All hospitals in NYC are kind of meh, and the nurses are hit or miss. What you really want to know is who covers for your OB - I know it's scheduled, but things happen. My first C/S was at a hospital I won't name, dr. I had never met before from a different practice covering for my regular OB (whom I really like, btw.) Had complications in 2d pregnancy, went to hi-risk practice at a different hospital, where top MFM certified OB did my C/S and later asked "who did this to you?!?" in reference to the scarring from the first. I don't know if it's just one of those things or if 1st doc did a bad job, that's why I won't name, but ask all the OBs who takes call for them. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I am looking for an amazing OB in NYC. (I am in first trimester, first time) I need to have a c-section and am 36, so I am looking for someone potentially High Risk. But, I am hoping for someone who is alternative minded. I have read some Dr's do c-sections differently and are more conscious of the mother wanting to hold the baby asap, and making it as close to a natural birth as possible given the circumstances. Thanks 28 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I had a c-sec because baby was in trouble. Baby was big to start with, was not descending well, but he let me keep trying until it actually just became unsafe. He is an excellent surgeon though! [ Reply | More ]

I seriously can't believe anyone could have had a good experience with him! I went on a recommendation once and was in complete shock he could have come recommended. It was a holiday and he was trying to cover for another doctor, but I was there for 3+ hours. After he had seen me and asked me to wait in his office, I did that for another half hour...when I heard him in the hall saying, who is [insert my name]....I ended up finding Dr. Matut whom I loved. PP:Sorry you had a bad experience with him, but i wouldn't discourage others from using him. Honestly, he can be a little "cold" on the regular, routine visits, but when it comes down to the day of delivery he is VERY warm and paternal like. He held my hand with my head on his shoulder in the OR while I was waiting for the spinal and in pain. He gave me a huge hug when he found me crying in my room pp. He would come and sit with me and chat pp while he was waiting for other patients in labor. I couldn't ask for more. [ Reply | More ]

His office staff is not the best and it is true that he is a little detached during regular visits, but if you ask him questions he always answers in detail and does not rush you. And he is amazing during delivery, works to avoid c-sections, and has years and years of experience so he really knows what he is doing, which is all that matters when you want a good, safe delivery. I had my dd with him, he was at the hospital with me from 11 pm to 1 pm the next day and I felt like I was in good hands, I could trust him. So mine was a good xperience. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] 1st DB is due tomorrow. On Thurs I had intense contractions for 2 hours, then they died down. On Fri I had lighter contractions for 3 hours. Last night nothing! We are so excited to meet the baby (don't know sex). What did you do to help your body go into labor naturally? Did it work? 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I walked and walked and walked. Everyday, anywhere from 3-6 miles, including on the treadmill. Who knows if it worked, but I did go into labor on my due date. [ Reply | More ]

How exciting for you! I remember that feeling!! Keep walking--that works best. I have also heard one glass of wine advised to some women (I never did that) and the old standby (and joke in many TV shows) -- orgasm. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] 35 weeks pg. The knuckle on my left middle finger hurts, like I can't even make a fist. If it gets into a fist, it won't open up on it's own without pain. What the heck is going on? Right middle finger knuckle hurts in the morning, but wears off soon. Is this related to joints opening up during pregnancy or something else? I am 28 and worried I am getting arthritis or something. I know this is a weird question, but thanks anyway. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

my wrists were in severe pain when i was pregnant & my fingers would go numb. dr. said it was totally normal due to fluid retention. it should ease up after you have the baby. [ Reply | More ]

It can be due to the relaxin hormone but also nerve entrapment, like Carpal Tunnel is not uncommon in pregnancy due to fluids and relaxin. It should subside shortly after pregnancy, if that's what it is. If it doesn't you need further evaluation because it can be arthritis also. That's exactly where I DO have arthritis. [ Reply | More ]
