OP: No. This is my second DS. I never had a CS either, so I've been told it isn't *that* big of a deal at this point...more of an incidental finding I should be careful of. If it stays past week 28 obviously it's a bigger issue to worry about. But it is my understanding that since I have this now - while it is unlikely anything will happen in the next few weeks - if it did, it would be much worse than of I didn't have it. That said, neither my OB or the MFM doctor were concerned and I don't technically have travel restrictions. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I am 21 weeks pregnant and just diagnosed with complete placenta previa. I am well aware that it shouldn't be a long term issue, but for now I am on pelvic rest. The issue is that we are supposed to go to St Lucia in a few weeks and will be about 40 minutes from the nearest hospital with any intensive care (to what degree, who knows). My OB says I am at no more risk with previa than I would be just normally pregnant, however at 24 weeks, the fetus is considered viable so it would be a life and death situation if something were to happen. If you were in my shoes, would you go or cancel? 40 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Grand Cayman. It does not remotely compare to the beauty of St. Lucia (it's a very developed, flat island with no lush vegetation), but the hospital is good and fairly close to the tourist part of the island. I used to live there, so I have first-hand experience with the hospital. [ Reply | More ]

Oh honey no. Cancel. I hope it resolves for you but I was hospitalized with PP at 27 weeks, and 28, and again from 30-35 when DB was born. This is life threatening to you and DB if you start to bleed. Your OB needs to get serious with you on this, get a second opinion from MFM specialist. Not worth traveling. I totally get it because my older DC was 3 too and not too psyched that summer vacation was visiting mommy in the hospial every day. Go next winter, little babies are easier to travel with than toddlers. [ Reply | More ]

OR above: Even the completely lame MFM team at my first hospital told me no travel, not even on JetBlue to see my mom 1 hour away. I did not take it seriously enough until one of the high risk guys at the practice I switched to told me "women die from this." So grateful he was that blunt with me, I needed to hear it. OP, please don't take chances. If you are lucky it will move but you have another DC to think about too, please don't risk your life for vacation, even sitting in stupid traffic on I-95 to the Cape. OP: I was told my risk was no more than anyone else's. I wasn't given any travel restrictions. Yes, I know this is serious - however I have been told it is serious if it doesn't move and quite frankly, at 21 weeks it is unlikely a problem. If it were, my OB would say no, right? I get it - I won't to St Lucia but I do not plan to sit at home all summer doing nothing because something *might* happen. More than likely, nothing will happen. I get that the risk is my own, but not a single doctor (inc the MFM team) has said my exact case all that serious. [ Reply | More ]

So what I was told at 21 weeks was no travel, take it easy, pelvic rest, no exercise, no heavy lifting. And everything was okay for another few weeks. It's true that it becomes more dangerous right around beginning of 3d tri - hence my first hospitalization a mere week after the second scan. You said your trip was in "a few weeks" - f you can wait to cancel w/o penalty, then wait, but don't plan on being able to go. If you want to go somewhere now, don't go by plane, there is no ER on a plane. I'm sorry about your vacation and hope everyhting works out well for you. ". [ Reply | More ]

OP: Thanks. I wasn't given any travel restrictions and my travel is for the first week of July. Sadly, we will cancel it now because I think there are penalties. I know I have to do what has to be done, but as I've been told not to worry about it at all I feel like there are some mixed messages. This placenta had *better* move to make this whole cancelled vacation worthwhile :) [ Reply | More ]

OP: Thank you for weighing in. My OB has been serious with me and is almost certain the placenta will move since I'm only 21 weeks. She has not restricted travel, however I get that I shouldn't to any place more adventurous now. I will get another scan at 28 weeks to see if things have resolved, so it isn't an issue we are taking lightly. It's just hard to let go of a dream vacation when we won't be traveling (for several reasons) for several years after this (so no winter vacation possible). I get that we shouldn't go to St Lucia...but would love suggestions on where people *would* deem possible. [ Reply | More ]

Ok, I'm just the mom who spent 6 weeks in and out of 2 hospitals and had a (thank god, healthy) preemie but I think your OB is downplaying it. I was diagnosed at the 20 week scan (actually dr could see it at 11 during CVS) and re-scanned at 26, still there. If it is posterior it may move; if anterior less likely. Please see about an MFM consult especially if you had previous C/S. The thing is that given its placement it can be irritated, which can cause bleeding. If you bleed heavily, they can't stop it. They have to deliver you. Get a re-scan in 4-5 weeks and if it's good news, rent a nice house on Kiawah or Sea Island or something. If you are in NYC call Carnegie Imaging for a second opinion. OP: I'm glad your baby is ok. I have had no previous CS. I was told it was too soon to see exactly where it was (posterior or anterior). I have another scan scheduled for when I am 28/29 weeks. Literature I've read said PP, if it's going to shift, will do so around that time so any earlier isn't beneficial to check. Sadly, we can *only* travel for the first week of July for other reasons. We did it. I wavered a little but decided to go ahead and do it. We were having a CVS for a single gene disorder and so we added that on as well. Our results came back normal but I was concerned we might find out something that we didn't really want to know (if that makes sense). Apparently with microarray there are often results that could be either here or there, and people do realize they just were/are better off not knowing. Your Mom should not throw it - it should be done by one her friends or one of yours. Ask them to keep it small and intimate. It can be hard to be the center of attention and the object of generosity, but you should try to get over those feelings. [ Reply | More ]

I am expecting DC#2 in the late summer, am miserable at my job, and would love to take some time off beyond 12 weeks of maternity leave. I ought to work but need to find a new field. You don't have to decide right now. See how your leave goes, how you feel managing two, etc. you might be able to try to extend your leave at your current job. I think you should definitely make the change if you want to, but give yourself time to settle into your new life before making any decisions [ Reply | More ]

I mostly enjoyed it - but you never know what will happen with your DH's career, so it's better to have two incomes I guess. It could be very hard to reenter your career, depending on what you do, keep that in mind. I would try to negotiate a longer (unpaid) leave with your employer. I regret not having done that because I want/need to return to work and I just. can't. find. anything. I have excellent credentials and have been out only for 2 years. [ Reply | More ]

I stopped working after my 2nd. It was great until it wasn't. Getting back into work force is way harder than getting another job. All positions I was looking at were for a small fraction of what I made (I was a banker so hard to go back after a break). Finally found a job working for a family member that was starting something. I also found (for me not generalizing) that my the example of dad working and mom not working set a bad example for 3 dds. I am much, much happier working and so are my girls and my dh. But it's all individual no right or wrong answers. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Just wanted to make ub users aware of a resource I just launched for couples coping with pregnancy loss - miscarriage, stillbirth and infant death. Includes multiple resources such as yoga, writing, photography, nutrition, music sharing, the male perspective and health. Hope that some might find it useful. We were recently featured in momfilter.com and were recommended by Dr. Weil. Thank you for the opportunity to share this. www.reconceivingloss.com. 11 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] Does anyone have any recent experience with Dr. Melissa Waterstone? I am 6 weeks pregnant and looking for a great OB for baby #2. I've read that she's not a hand holder, which is fine, but want to make sure she's a competent and caring doctor. Thanks! 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

np: ita. she was my OB for dc born in 2008 and that's exactly how i'd describer her: competent and caring and definitely friendly, but not super warm and fuzzy. she's not the OB for the patient who's the type who wants to call 5x a week with 10 questions. [ Reply | More ]

Had a great experience with her in 2011. I moved to westchester and had to commute an hour to the hospital in labor. She 'accidentally' broke my water for me so that I didn't have to leave and go home despite not being quite far enough yet. Also she stuck through with me when labor stalled, didn't force a cssection when I had been there too long. She was leaving for vacation at the end of her shift and stayed on two hours longer than she needed to to help me deliver. Not warm and fuzzy, but happy to answer all questions and very supportive when you need it. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Going to a wedding in a few weeks at which time I'll be 28 weeks pregnant. I am tall and busty but belly is not yet huge (could pop within the next few weeks). How is this dress? (Link inside). It looks good on the skinny model who has a small chest, but wondering if it will look strange on someone with boobs. 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

It will NOT look good on a busty woman - it is a gorgeous dress, but with just a bit of curve, it ends up looking like a muumuu (?). If you popped big time, you could get away with it. [ Reply | More ]

OP: These are some great suggestions - thank you! I'm torn between a few of these now and a fairly unpopular (these days) family name. Part of me wants to use it but I want to be 100% certain, you know? It's Fredrick, by the way. My father's name, who is by far the kindest person I have ever met (in fact, I've never met a Fred I didn't get along with). Thoughts? It was also my grandfather's name. [ Reply | More ]
