[ - ] 7 weeks into first pregnancy. I had to unbutton my skinny jeans today. Does that seem early? Also had a very dark positive line on the pregnancy test, which I read is a possibly sign of twins. Twins do not run in my family, just wondering why I am showing so quickly. Two people have already asked me! 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

How far along are you? If far enough that the pregnancy is considered viable, then they'll likely give you a packet of info. But if not, here are some basics in case you don't already know the answers. What foods, medicines, etc. should you avoid? Do they recommend a prescription prenatal vitamin? What level of activity and fitness are ok for you? What types of tests and ultrasounds can you expect over the course of the pregnancy? How often will you have appointments? What is your OB's practice when it comes to delivery - will your OB definitely deliver you or do they have a group of doctors that rotate on a schedule? What hospital do they deliver at? Good luck! np: you might also want to ask about their approach to things like genetic testing and natural childbirth (e.g. what is their threshold for intervention, csection, etc). You can briefly review your diet and discuss weight gain goals. Obviously, ask questions about any preexisting conditions you have or medications you take (routinely or only on occasion). Focus on that it is nice that they care and want to share your joy, but protect your privacy. A good answer would be,"I'll let you know when I am" - I had a few miscarriages and did not discuss my pregnancies until I was ready to do so. I would only tell people I would know that I would lean on if I had a miscarriage. I didn't even tell my Mom until pretty far along for a few of my pregnancies. [ Reply | More ]

Rude may be a slightly strong word but it's a known fact that it's incredibly IMPOLITE. Why else would there be such a things as "couples announcing"? Couples always collectively decide when to make the big announcement so why would you want to beat them to it and ask them to confirm your suspicions? It's like you're ruining their chance to make that special announcement. Not sure why you are posting this though..you can just google it and you'll get your answer. [ Reply | More ]

PS. I found I got what I paid for. There were definitely nannies willing to work for less, but I wanted someone with a long history with another family, thus was looking for a bit more pay as she'd received raises over the years. Clearly we didn't want to start her at such a high level that she'd previously been at, but did compromise for a bit higher rate to find a long-term keeper. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks everyone. We're sad, but agree - better this way than to keep carrying a pregnancy that will ultimately not be viable. Hoping to try again after my body clears this. I know it's common and many couples go through this (my own parents included, before they had me). I've put all my books etc. in a bag so they're ready for me when I do conceive again, and made a little bag with our positive HPTs and ultrasound photo and my journal pages, so I have a little memento of my first pregnancy. Quite honestly, all you need to do is to eat healthily and avoid specific foods (that are be specified in most pregnancy books). ^depend on stability of my income. Always thought that my parents would want to watch our DC every once in a while. However, my best friend has a sweet, easy 7 month old and my mom babysat for a day, and found it stressful and overwhelming. The baby is at my mom's house again today and my mom called to make sure I can come over and help. Suddenly realizing that although I have a GREAT mom, she's not going to be the help I thought she was. Is she just out of practice? Will it be different when it's her own grandchild? [ Reply | More ]

I'm a bit confused about your mom's role here. If you were a SAHM, why would you be terribly concerned about your childcare set-up. And if you were a WOHM, you'd need your mom to watch db more than "every once in a while". Fwiw, I live far from my mom, but when I visit, she doesn't help with the kids. Eldest is 10, and I can think of one occasion when my mother babysat (5 years ago after both kids were in bed--dh and I went out for 2 hours). [ Reply | More ]

Actually, I was mainly hoping she'd be able to help me get the hang of things when DB is newborn, and then spend occasional time with DB if we need to go out or if childcare falls through or something like that. I lived right upstairs from my grandmother and so we never had babysitters, but I guess that's when we were older, not infants. I didn't expect my mom to be so jittery around babies and now I'm thinking I may not be able to ask her to help out even occasionally. [ Reply | More ]

Our situation was similar. DH stayed with DC, as he could, depending on work load, and we hired a neighbor to watch DB when he was on deadline, etc. Worked very well for us until DC started school and then we used afterschool daycare. As long as you both are on board and respectful of one anothers roles and see yourselves as a team of parents, this works great. My DH was great with our kids and they really benefitted from having a actively parenting father. [ Reply | More ]

I'm in NYC. Parents live across the river, about 10 mins away. I haven't talked to her about how involved she wants to be - as I mentioned above, my grandmother (her mother) lived downstairs from us, so I had a very close relationship with my grandma and she was a big part of caring for us. I guess I did assume that my mom would want to do similarly, given that she emulates my grandma's example in every other way and has always expressed a wish to have grandkids. But if she's too nervous around babies, it'll have to wait until DCs are older. [ Reply | More ]

F off. OP: this is a common conundrum amongst my social circle, self included. I can tell you that the most well intentioned grandparents can't care for dc's the way they would like to (or you'd like them to) in many cases, bc it's just too physically exhausting. I'd look into sitters or daycare (you'd be surprised--they are not as scary as you'd imagine and sitters often become just like family!). Dh should work. You'll need the income. GL [ Reply | More ]

^^^one last thing, and I hope you don't get offended, but think long and hard about some of these suggestions that dh be a SAHD. No matter what you two think you are prepared for in terms of parental/marital dynamics, he could end up resenting this role and feel emasculated, you'll secretly resent his closeness to db. I've seen it happen. And if you for whatever reason separate one day, a SAHD is far more likely to have leg up on shared physical custody. Just want to make sure you're fully aware. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks, appreciate the advice. You're right, it is physically exhausting to care for very little ones. My parents are currently healthy and young for their ages, but I know I can't expect them to have the stamina. I know my DH is going to be great with the baby, but I don't know that he desires the role of SAHD - if anything he'll feel guilty about not bringing in income, and he's convinced I'm going to be a better parent because I work with kids as part of my job. I lived in Park Slope for many years and the Park Slope Parents website is indeed a good resource. It has a large recommendations section. I hear it is making a great effort to improve but no, New York Methodist is not considered a particularly good hospital. My friend did not have a good birth experience at Long Island College Hospital, and it's struggling anyway. I had both my babies in Manhattan, at NYU Downtown and NYU Langone respectively. For one thing, I was working in Manhattan and so I would go to appointments on lunch hours. For another, that was where my long-time and beloved OB/GYN was affiliated. All my Brooklyn friends had their babies in Manhattan but not as far uptown at Columbia Presbyterian. Park Slope does abound with highly recommended midwives, doulas, lactation consultants, prenatal yoga and postnatal yoga and prenatal and postnatal pretty much everything you can think of. I also hear that Maimonides is improving rapidly but don't know anyone who has had a baby there. It has a rep as more of a cancer hospital, I believe. [ Reply | More ]
