i love the name Issac, though I like the spelling Isaac better. Angus is very AC/DC, Oscar and Max and Henry are very popular these days, and I have never been a fan of the name Felix.

If a name's popularity is important to you check the social security popularity lists, you can get it laid out as a graph or in lists on behindthename.com or you can try that name voyager map application which tells you how popular a name is, by region.

Henry and Max are really overused, you're going to hear. I have a friend whose kid's name is Isaac, and it's cute on him; contrast of cute little boy and old-fashioned name. Don't listen to what people say about nicknames--kids find nicknames for just about every name.

If you do a search, this has been discussed alot before. It's funny what people strongly agree and disagree on. I'll tell you that people kept telling me a changing table or dresser was not necessary, but I found it completely necessary. They told me you could change the baby on the floor, or a bed, or where ever. We got a dresser and put a changing pad on top of it. Who wants to bend over every time you change a baby?

Baby Bargains was just ok for me. I didn't agree with many of their recs (For example, Chicco Keyfit is so much better than Snugride). If you go to Amazon.com, lots of people have lists of baby items they really used or liked. I think that can give you a good idea. I also went to babystore websites and looked up random people's registries to get an idea of what other people were buying.

Of course it's not tacky. We call my daughter Dee Dee because that nickname just happened and it stuck. Is that tacky? I don't know and I don't care. Why don't you name him something different for his first name and Alexander as his middle name?

I guess tacky isn't the word, but I'm just wondering about the forced nickname thing. DH really wants the middle name to be after him and his dad. I was just curious about the insta-UB reaction - they find tackiness all over the place!

I'm from a Greek family, tradition says firstborn sons should be named after their grandfather -- my dad shared a name with about 10 of his cousins. No biggie at all, however you decide to do it (middle name, nickname, etc.) Is the name one that offers a good nickname option that you can call your son? Or not so much?

No, there's no good nickname option, which is why I'd do call him by his initials. It may sound unprofessional in his future career, but by that point he can always choose whether to go by his first name or keep going by his initials.

No, I think that's cute. And being of greek descent, i can tell you that in that culture, since all kids are named after grandparents, cousins often have the same names. we actually considered something similar - were going to name a girl (if we had a girl) after a female relative and then use initals as nn. we ended up having a boy and used a different name w same initials and used same nn. So AJ for either say Amanda Jill or Alexander James.

unless you're giving your child some really unusual one of a kind first name, his name won't be his own, bc hundreds if not thousands of other people will have it too. i get not wanting to name your kid the same thing as a cousin due to family concerns or practical reasons, but this just seems silly.

I had a pre-existing back problem with herniations in my lower back. AT 12-13 weeks, my back started to get bad (evidently from the increase in relaxin hormone) and I upped my attendance prenatal pilates and yoga classes. Bad move. The morning after one class I couldn't stand without a cane and back brace. My suggestions are get yourself a pregnancy back brace ASAP. Take it easy on the pilates and yoga, and instead go to see a physical therapist and chiropractor who specialize in prenatal care. I ended up having to be bed-rested for the best part of 10 days, and doing chiropratic 3x/week and PT 2x/week. by 18 weeks I was pretty must back to the way I was before--no cane, and no brace.

What part of the country? In many places, not so much Manhattan, there are very active online local moms groups. Otherwise, truly just hanging out at the park will be a great way to meet moms with similar schedules. Does Meetup have an option for this? I know it is great for other things.

I am only a small sample - but FWIW I liked babycenter with my first baby for the updates on development each week, and comparing development notes online with people due around your time is great (if you are well off though, I would leave that out... def attracts LMC/WC crowd). However, I made a mistake in meeting up with someone from my birth club (month/year you're due) IRL to try to make friends. It was odd,was a little sad we didn't meet again - but then I read later that she flunked the postpartum psych exam done in NJ. Thought I dodged a bullet. Takeaway is it's like internet dating... never know what you'll get IRL. All that being said - start taking classes ASAP on how to care for baby at the hospital where you'll deliver; ask the pediatrician you'll choose; take prenatal yoga or whatever. Everyone is in your boat the first time around, so most people will be friendly because they want to make that new mom connection, too. GL!

Tribeca Parenting (formerly RealBirth before they merged with Tribeca Pediatrics) has amazing birthing classes and other classes and seminars related to birthing, newborn care and parenting. I didn't have a doula so this is just a random musing ... I'd try to figure out how she and DH are going to share roles (or have separate roles?) during the birth. My DH is very hands on, so she would have more of a supporting role to him - but if your DH wants to be less involved, then she would be more active. Or maybe you're not sure yet and you want her to play it by ear, etc.

np: I found passing the placenta the worst part of labor. It's slimy and squishy and blobby and just disgusting. I had no problem with my dh seeing all of labor and me at my finest animal moment, but the fact that he saw my placenta makes me weirdly upset. It's just so utterly disgusting. It's an organ you expel from your body when you're done with it! Amazing, but just not something I want any part of after expulsion.

Isn't the whole point of hiring a doula is for her to be with you as a birth coach? I'm a few weeks ahead of you, and my DH wants to be there and involved, but honestly neither of us has seen anyone give birth before. We have no idea what to do! Yes, yes, do what is natural, but experienced doulas have been to hundreds of births and are trained in tricks to assist a woman in labor, such as positions to rotate into, etc. We also wanted her to basically translate what the medical staff is saying, and give us advice, in her opinion, as to whether the doctors and nurses are doing something that is to help them only or to help me (i.e. lay flat, take pitocin, have epidural, etc.). I wouldn't send a doula out of the room to deal with my family. That is not her role.

Who are you using? You didn't talk to her about this stuff when you interviewed her before hiring? Most doulas are also lactation consultants and the post-partum visits are to check on you and the baby, to see if you need any help breastfeeding or with the latch or have any questions about the baby and breastfeeding(I'm sure I will). One post-partum visit will be right after you get home from the hospital, and the second will be about a week later. The two pre-natal visits are prep work for the delivery, where she is going to discuss with you options and what goes on from her point of view, suggest positions for labor and delivery, talk about laboring at your home (mine wants me to labor at home with her for at least 4 to 5 hours before the three of us go to the hospital together (me, DH, her), talk about your birth plan, your willingess or ability to take a variety of pain meds, explain her role, etc. Your pre-natal visits probably won't start until 30-32 weeks for the first and the second at 36 weeks or so. You are overthinking this--you don't need to "make work" for her. She's paid for a very specific, short-time period task.

Have your doula offer advice to DH on how to be an effective coach. You (and he) will want the support that he can give if he is confident. Little things go a long way: do not offer a pregnant women a choice ("Do you want some water?") - give them the water straw. Women in labor can't make decisions from a rational place and when they are asked to decide something like do I want some water? it is sometimes a hard choice. So the coach shoves the straw in their face and if no water is needed a simple head shake is an answer. DH and the doula should decide who will be playing gatekeeper and keeping the right amount of visitors that you are comfortable with in or out.

^^^Think of the doula as you rational voice because you will go into the zone and not really have access to your rational brain. She is someone who is working for you and your interests. Lean on her as much as you want, both figuratively and literally.

No recommendations, but from the peanut gallery, you sound like kind of a high-maintenance patient, which is different from a high-risk pregnancy. Drs may shy away from you if you come on this strong when you interview them. You should cultivate a more grateful tone for your consult if you'd like them to take you on. If you are high risk, they are doing you the courtesy of adding you to their patient roster.

Give us a category and we'll tell you the best. Stroller: Bugaboo. Umbrella: MacLaren Volo. Carseat : Chicco Keyfit 30. Baby carrier: Ergo (bjorn will break your back). Diaper disposal: Diaper Genie. Bouncy seat: Mamaroo and a Bjorn baby sitter.

np I bought Mamaroo for #3. He HATED it. Ended up using the cheapie FP portable swing I got when I had #1 9 years earlier.

OR - that's funny, that's what we used. But I've heard from everyone else how Mamaroo is the best. There is some element of preference in these choices - in some cases you won't know what you like (or what your baby likes) until you try it.

Mamaroo is very gimmicky. It looked OK in the living room, though. I paid around $200 for the thing, as I recall.

No diaper disposal - gross. Bouncy seat: Fisher Price rainforest (blue light is like baby crack). Don't get a carrier if you're not a carrier person. Bjorn is really bad for their hips after like 2/3 months. Stroller: test drive - don't spend a ton until you figure out what you need. Bugaboo is a huge waste of money because there are better ones for much less.

np- we were big fans, but I understand your point. we are now in suburbs, but our city life was primarily focused on walking distance to our apartment, so we appreciated that peg had extra plush lining, etc, which our son seemed to like (somewhat particular even then). but folding it and getting it in and out of cabs or buses was a bit tricky for me (I am petite and admittedly weak), although my dh had literally no problem with it.

Giggle is awesome for this. They screen everything and then only sell a few of each kind of item. It's stupid expensive, but so easy. CHeck out a store or go to giggle.com if you're not in NYC.

The big strollers are only for walking, but you need them because the park and the uneven sidewalks suck for umbrella strollers and snap n go's.

We used pouch & then ergo for public transport, bug for walks. Intended to get umbrella but db was small and didnt need it. You can't put a newborn in an umbrella anyway, so, even if you're sure you won't use a carrier, there's no rush to buy one. You'll have an idea whether you'll want super light or one that's got more going on--like a basket--after db arrives. Plus, there's always new gear.

You just need 1 to start. You don't need a snap n go. Just get a nice stroller (citi mini, bugaboo, etc), but make sure it has car seat attachment. Then much later (10 months), you'll need an umbrella stroller.

You only need one. Don't get a newborn one - it's MUCH easier to carry a little baby than push him in a stroller. Just get one foldable stroller for when the DB is big enough to sit up. I like the Maclaren techno because you can recline it (so the DB can take naps in it while you're out).

Love Charles and Mark, followed by Luke. Don't like repeating "k" sounds (Mark Kieran, Luke Kieran, etc). Kieran is not as classic as the others (and your taste seems to run to more classic names), and Dylan is a bit more trendy.

Shampoo is something that rinses out of your hair, so I didn't worry about it too much. Stuff like lotion and face creams...etc that sit on your skin all day--that is more of an issue. As far as skin cremes go--no retinol and no salicylic acid
