I delivered at Columbia and it was not so easy - the first time I had to wait for a few hours, the second time I was put on the ante-natal floor and the nurses were plain horrible. I was criticized incessantly, nobody could even watch my baby for 5 minutes while I used the shower, etc. When you say NYP, I don't know whether you are talking about Columbia or Weill Cornell, though. Supply and demand. I couldn't imagine spending $2400 for 4 nights in the hispital when I could go on a really nice weekend getaway for that much! I delivered with the latter. I know she was previously with a high-risk practice so that may explain c-section rate. I know that her preference is to deliver vaginally, as she explicitly told me, and I did with her. She is no-nonsense, very smart. I trusted her all the way. I started out with the Vitafusion gummies but realized they don't have iron and the vitamin A is all retinyl vs. beta carotene and too much vitamin A is linked to birth defects. I then switched to the Rainbow Lite Prenatal One brand since it is supposed to be for sensitive stomachs but it contains various herbs and the What to Expect book says to avoid anything with those non-FDA approved herbs. I then switched to the One a Days but only 50% of the vitamin A is beta-carotene. I also bought a B6 supplement because it is supposed to help with nausea but the label says "not for pregnant women". i do! even if you are planning on getting an epidural, a doula can help with pain relief in the early stages of labor. they can also advocate with the doctors and nurses to make sure you are as comfortable as possible and to help make sure that medical decisions are in your best interests. finally, they can relieve some of the pressure on the spouse. studies show that patients with doulas have better outcomes in terms of pain management than those without. of course you can have a baby without a doula. it's not necessary. but many nice things in life aren't necessary--having a housekeeper, going out to dinner, reading a good book, going to the opera, taking a cab instead of driving. why not have somebody there who can make things a little easier for you? also, though doctors and nurses aren't "against your best interest," they often do have interests that don't necessarily coincide with a woman's at all times. i say this as someone who works in medicine and is married to someone who works in medicine. in any situation, it's good to have an experienced advocate. All the things you list are actual things worth spending $ on. I can advocate for myself and my DH is right by my side. Not knocking doulas - and I guess they're great if you really want an unmedicated birth or don't have a partner - but otherwise, I really just don't see a point. Seems like a colossal waste of money on some trend. I get a nurse already - not sure why I'd need anyone else in the room. I just don't get the glorification of the whole birth experience - our generation is so narcissistic and self-centered. I am 33 wks and placenta is still .5 cm away from being in the clear. Really, really don't want a c-section (although if that's what has to happen for a healthy outcome, so be it). I believe in acupuncture. I've used it for many things, and I believe it turned my breech baby. It can't hurt. They can do "up points" and maybe pull the placenta up a bit. No guarantees, but it can't hurt. [ Reply | More

There are specifc point that the acu can target to get the baby to flip. It won't work of you baby is too large, or you don't have enough fluid. But if you have the room, there is a chance. I did 3 treatments in an attempt to move a pretty large baby, and it turned at 38 wks. Could it have turned on its own, sure... But I think the acu helped, and even my Mfm suggested to try it. Attendings are those who have completed their residency and fellowship. Medical students are medical students. Residents are technically MDs as they have completed med school but are doing their required training. Fellows are those who have finished residency but would like to further specialize. You should probably discuss this with your doctor though as its usually hospital policy who is in the room. Also, maybe you should have thought about not delivering at a teaching hospital before your 8th month of pregnancy. Residents and students will be involved in your after care as well. [ Reply | More

Med students, residents, fellows and attendings are all different things. Med students are in their third or fourth year of med school and should really just be observing, or doing really basic stuff with a lot of supervision. Residents have graduated med school, and are considered doctors, but are training in their specialty. Their responsibility shouldn't be greater than their ability, and there should be a lot of oversight. Fellows have finished their residancy and are doing their sub-specialty training. For example an OB might do a fellowship in IVF, or high risk delivery. Not all doctors do fellowships it is only for doctors who want to specialize. It means 1-4 years more of extra training, and respectively as many years of being paid only slightly more than a resident. An attending is a full doctor, who has likely been through all these steps. An attendant is a bridesmaid at your wedding. [ Reply | More

You don't really get to choose this. You can choose who is allowed to deliver DB. Don't go to a teaching hospital if you don't want students practicing on you. i did not like the huang/rhee/bradley practice. loved huang, thought rhee was abrasive and she is not a good choice if you want to use the birthing center. we got stuck with her and she thought it was too much of a pain to go back and forth between the center and the regular floor--my dh and the nurses really had to push. then she kept threatening to induce me if i didn't progress faster. again, the nurses had to advocate for me with MY OWN DOCTOR. it sucked. the staff is also horrible there. lost records of three of my appointments--i had to show them my appointment card and then they acted like they were doing me a favor by fitting me in. once my dr wasn't even there and nobody bothered to call and tell me. again, huang and bradley are great but you might get stuck with rhee and you have to deal with incompetent office staff (unless they've improved). I go to Claudia Holland. No idea of her c-section rate. Your DH may not know what sections are really necessary when they're making a call in the moment. However, I had VB and so did my friend who goes to her. We were both in mid-30s and I was induced. Each of us has had 2 VBs with Dr. Holland. She is great; she treats the whole patient. She does not do the birthing center though, but she is at SLR. Personally I would not go for birthing center because you cannot transfer for pain relief if you change your mind. There's no "ok" just let your body do what it needs to do and don't look at the number. Stay as active as you can comfortably and eat mostly healthy foods. Everyone has different body types. I had one drug-free delivery and one with an epi. Breathing techniques will help, but so much of it depends on your feelings regarding a natural delivery. I was really determined to go natural for my first, but I also had a really easy delivery. My second was much much more difficult and there is no way I could have done it without the epi. I'm pretty sure I'm the exception. First was four hours, start to finish and only the last hour was truly painful. The beginning hurt, but was very manageable. Second was a sloooow labor. I did not take a class but tried different breathing techniques on my own...BUT I started way before 2 weeeks until due date. I would recommend prenatal yoga but you are a bit late for that too. Perhaps just put some relaxing tunes on, sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes and take deep breaths. To be honest with both of mine I really did not need it though. My class was completely useless (it was free with insurance though so I guess I'm glad I never had to worry I was missing out on something). For me, I had back labor, and the absolute crucial thing was to be someplace I could walk around. To lay down for a second was absolutely excruciating. I also was strep B positive so had to have an IV, but was somewhere I could walk around with the IV. I used the exercise ball and got in all different positions. So, I know this doesn't answer your question, but maybe you want to check on what options you would have for that at your hospital. (I don't even know if what I felt were contractions, since it was all in my back, but there were no gaps in the pain, so the breathing was useless for me. These are two totally different things. One is a bouncer and the other is a jumper. The Bjorn bouncer is the best bouncer you can buy; it fits babies much longer than most. This is how I got a shower for the first years of both children's lives--stuck them in the Bjorn Bouncer from birth until almost age 1. You can keep newborns in it for quite a while, but older babies, just long enough for a shower. The Jumperoo is for babies once they are sitting up and need to be entertained and you need a pair of hands for cooking or whatever. Around 5 months - 12 months old. Awesome. Both are lifesavers. FYI: Jumperoo is actually developmentally bad for kids legs. I'm and MD and worked with a great pediatric neurologist (at NYU) who evaluated kids for muscle and developmental problems. He said that baby jumpers are bad for kids because it works the wrong muscles and can cause injuries. FWIW he also said that walkers are not good for kids leg development either. yes, that sounds right. My dd's hydronephrosis was detected at 30 weeks on sono. You'll want to see a pediatric urologist before she's born and you'll probably be having fairly frequent sonos before she's born. Typically where you deliver won't matter unless there are severe issues with both kidneys--I delivered at Lenox Hill but all of dd's urology care has been at Cornell. Like I said above--have your MFM call to the specialist for you--you probably want to see 2 different ones before db is born so you feel comfortable with the specialist you've chosen and the advice you're getting.
