I had 2 c-sections at Lenox Hill. The first night w/first DD I didn't get a private room and it was a nightmare. The mother and baby cried all night, and since I didn't get into the room til 1am it was pretty brutal. If you can swing a private room DO IT. I don't think there are private rooms in NYC where you don't need to pay more. CT, LI and NJ - privates are the norm. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you. I am thinking more and more we should get a private room. At least for the first night. I hear lihc in Brooklyn they are only $200. But I think we should not have that be a factor in making our decision. It would only be a difference of 300-600. I am thinking we could have a private the first and maybe second night. Thinking of it as an insurance deductible or something. [ Reply | More ]

If you are still watching this - I used my HSA to fund private room. At Lenox Hill it was 750 a night or something. That was in May - up from 400 in 2010 when I had DD. The nurses said it was because of Beyonce factor! [ Reply | More ]

I found the opposite there - loved the recovery nurses to death. They were awesome. However I had vaginal births so I'm talking about the post-partum floor, not recovery room after surgery. L&D nurses at SLR, on the other hand, were quite mean. [ Reply | More ]

I have him down as one of my top possibilities! I scheduled a first appointment in two weeks, but he is too full to take me, so I have to see Dr. Tang. Do you have any experience with any of the other Dr's in that practice? Also, were you able to have your baby on your chest right away or did they take her/him away to do all the vitals and then you could have skin to skin/breastfeeding? Is your baby sleeping next to you or in a different room? Thanks! [ Reply | More ]

He's great! I met Tang only once, she seemed nice as well, I think they're all good. No, not able to hold baby on chest right away but it was all very pleasant. They quickly checked DB and then wrapped her and handed her to DH. They handed DB to me for BF once I was in the recovery room - it seemed rather quick, but I honestly don't remember how much time there was in between. They are pretty adamant about BF and will help you with that. You can choose whether to have DB next to you in the room or not. If not, they roll them in to your room whenever they need to BF. Choose based on OB practice, not the hospital. All hospitals in NYC are kind of meh, and the nurses are hit or miss. What you really want to know is who covers for your OB - I know it's scheduled, but things happen. My first C/S was at a hospital I won't name, dr. I had never met before from a different practice covering for my regular OB (whom I really like, btw.) Had complications in 2d pregnancy, went to hi-risk practice at a different hospital, where top MFM certified OB did my C/S and later asked "who did this to you?!?" in reference to the scarring from the first. I don't know if it's just one of those things or if 1st doc did a bad job, that's why I won't name, but ask all the OBs who takes call for them. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I am looking for an amazing OB in NYC. (I am in first trimester, first time) I need to have a c-section and am 36, so I am looking for someone potentially High Risk. But, I am hoping for someone who is alternative minded. I have read some Dr's do c-sections differently and are more conscious of the mother wanting to hold the baby asap, and making it as close to a natural birth as possible given the circumstances. Thanks 28 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

PP:Sorry you had a bad experience with him, but i wouldn't discourage others from using him. Honestly, he can be a little "cold" on the regular, routine visits, but when it comes down to the day of delivery he is VERY warm and paternal like. He held my hand with my head on his shoulder in the OR while I was waiting for the spinal and in pain. He gave me a huge hug when he found me crying in my room pp. He would come and sit with me and chat pp while he was waiting for other patients in labor. I couldn't ask for more. [ Reply | More ]

His office staff is not the best and it is true that he is a little detached during regular visits, but if you ask him questions he always answers in detail and does not rush you. And he is amazing during delivery, works to avoid c-sections, and has years and years of experience so he really knows what he is doing, which is all that matters when you want a good, safe delivery. I had my dd with him, he was at the hospital with me from 11 pm to 1 pm the next day and I felt like I was in good hands, I could trust him. So mine was a good xperience. [ Reply | More ]

It can be due to the relaxin hormone but also nerve entrapment, like Carpal Tunnel is not uncommon in pregnancy due to fluids and relaxin. It should subside shortly after pregnancy, if that's what it is. If it doesn't you need further evaluation because it can be arthritis also. That's exactly where I DO have arthritis. [ Reply | More ]

Because our perspectives don't necessarily align with those from backwater Kansas. Too much space is like too much "stuff", it's materialistic and a waste. You can do it for a while. Even in a rental, you can put up a temporary wall (there are pressurized ones) to give db a little privacy. It's tight and you might need to put some stuff in storage for a while, but you will be better off in the long run to take some time to find the right place than moving to something not quite right, but a bit bigger. We moved to a temporary spot then again a year later and with the moving costs and stress, etc. I would have stayed in the smaller place and made a single, more strategic move. [ Reply | More ]

This is fairly common during pregnancy. When I was pregnant with #1, I was part of a mommy group and I believe a quarter of the women were diagnosed with this during the pregnancy. You take antibiotics and that's it. It's not a big deal at all. [ Reply | More ]

Ice pops and sorbet tasted like heaven when I was in labor. Make sure to bring stuff for after – I had DS in the middle of the night and had nothing packed to eat and was starving. Luna bars, peanut butter crackers, etc. are good. [ Reply | More ]

I delivered at Columbia and it was not so easy - the first time I had to wait for a few hours, the second time I was put on the ante-natal floor and the nurses were plain horrible. I was criticized incessantly, nobody could even watch my baby for 5 minutes while I used the shower, etc. When you say NYP, I don't know whether you are talking about Columbia or Weill Cornell, though. The doctors at Columbia were amazing, though. [ Reply | More ]

The second you arrive, have DH go register you for a private room - this will get you in the line. Then it is just luck of the draw on supply and demand. I started out in a shared room but was transferred to a private within a few hours. [ Reply | More ]

Supply and demand. I couldn't imagine spending $2400 for 4 nights in the hispital when I could go on a really nice weekend getaway for that much! First time at Cornell they could barely find a bed, second time I had a double room to myself (at no extra cost) for 3 of the 4 nights bc there were so few deliveries. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Trying to decide on OB for my 1st pregnancy: Dr. Alan Adler, Dr. Wenhui Jin or Dr. Sidney Wu. The latter seems to have a too high c-section rate, though.... Any ideas or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I delivered with the latter. I know she was previously with a high-risk practice so that may explain c-section rate. I know that her preference is to deliver vaginally, as she explicitly told me, and I did with her. She is no-nonsense, very smart. I trusted her all the way. If you want someone warm and cuddly, may not be your doctor though. [ Reply | More ]

OR from above: that was not me cursing at you. I don't understand what that's about. I don't know who delivers for her if she is unavailable. She honestly seems like the type who never takes a vacation. I had another dr. answer a question when I called after hours once. He was kind of rude, honestly, but I called her office the next day and she saw me asap. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Prenatal vitamin recos? I started out with the Vitafusion gummies but realized they don't have iron and the vitamin A is all retinyl vs. beta carotene and too much vitamin A is linked to birth defects. I then switched to the Rainbow Lite Prenatal One brand since it is supposed to be for sensitive stomachs but it contains various herbs and the What to Expect book says to avoid anything with those non-FDA approved herbs. I then switched to the One a Days but only 50% of the vitamin A is beta-carotene. I also bought a B6 supplement because it is supposed to help with nausea but the label says "not for pregnant women". What gives? Any recos/help would be appreciated! 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]
