I've never heard of it but I would just get a regular crib that converts. I know many moms who end up ditching the crib all together because of sleep issues, so you may waste your money. I considered the Stokke but decided against it because you have to pay for their custom sheets, etc, and the expenses mount.

I have the regular Bam (I think it's basically the same) and it's been great so far. I like that it uses standard crib sheets (rather than the stokke where everything is custom and $$$). We used the bassinet until db was 4.5 months, and it was so handy to be able to move it around the apartment. It's not the most attractive crib, but whatever

I like it because you can have the small bassinet for a few months and then it gets bigger. My daughter slept in the PNP for over 4 months and that thing is huge and so unattractive!! It looks like a cage which is a turnoff but I do like that you can use the sheets and not get custom stuff like the Stokke. Also the feature to move is great because we do have a seperate room that we can move if needed or into out room because my kids will be sharing. Thanks for the input

I received the Bam bassinet and mattress as a baby gift. The mattress is way too small for the bassinet and is really unsafe. There is at least two inches of room on all sides between the mattress and the bassinet rails. I know other folks have had this problem too from various videos/reviews posted online. This is exactly what all the baby safety books warn against - a newborn's fingers or even head could get stuck in this space.
When I tried to contact Argington to address this problem, they were beyond unhelpful. Their customer service is atrocious. First, the customer care phone line was disconnected for about 2 days straight a couple weeks ago. I managed to reach them by email but then they dropped the correspondence. I never heard back after sending photos and a video of the too-small mattress. When I called back to follow up, I spoke with their customer service guy, Janery, by phone but the connection was awful - the line was fuzzy and I could barely hear him, even after calling back several times. It seems that Janery is the only person who works at customer service at Argington - I think he must be based overseas. He told me multiple times over the phone not to post negative reviews online because he "is a parent and could lose his job," which I found very manipulative and unprofessional. Nevertheless, he never transferred me to a manager, as I asked, and was completely unable or unwilling to help me. When I emailed Andrew Thornton (one of the founders of Argington) directly, I believe someone went so far as to reply to my email from that account pretending to be Andrew (suffice to say that the English spelling and grammar in that email was seemingly not that of a native speaker).
I have no idea what is wrtong with this company, but honestly, it seems like a small cost to the Argington company to replace a tiny piece of foam compared to all the business they will likely lose from poor customer service and bad reviews like this one on Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Brooklyn mommy blogs, etc.
This company, which purports to be eco-friendly and green and locally made is a total scam - unsafe products and nonexistent customer service to boot. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
We will be purchasing a custom mattress from another company to ensure our baby's safety.

DH and I also chose to do what you did the first time - the latin American way. Legally our dcs have both names but they just use his last name. Tell DH that it's important to you that you are represented in their legal names. And don't budge.

I agree. Why does he think he needs to be represented but you don't? And why does this matter to him more with a boy than a girl? He sounds sexist.

And your children will keep both names, as will your grandchildren. If they marry like minded folks, I wish you long years of health and happiness so that you may make it to the baptism/briss/secular celebration of your great grand child: Aaron Smith Johnson Green Cohen Abu Kozi Guutenhel Kinney Lewis Clark O'Rourke Kennedy (no relation) Fallon DuBois Polmanski Flynn.

I think you should hold your ground if it's important to you. DH is being very sexist in changing his tune for a boy... and it sends a bad message to your DD. My boys have my name as their middle name - mostly because I was trying not to be a PITA. The whole name changing thing drives me nuts. It's 2012. I hate that I don't have the same name as my kids -but I'm not willing to give up my identity (even if it is a stupid name) because of some archaic social standard.

It's annoying he is changing his mind with kid #2. I don't know how it works legally to have 2 last names though, sounds tricky? We decided to have kids have my last name as middle name, and I hyphenate. Since they hear me refer to myself as Jenny Smith-Jones and they are Alice Smith Jones and Betty Smith Jones they seem to use their middle name a lot more than other kids do. I don't know, the name thing is a pain.

If you didn't hyphenate, your DD has his last name already. Your name is already a middle name. Do the same for both kids and point that out to him.

OP: I appreciate all the support. For DC #1 we agreed to two things: (1) Children would be named with both last names, as DD #1 already has, and (2) that DC #2 would take his middle name, Kieran, of which I reluctantly agreed to at the time - with note that I did not like the name much. So I'm in a tight spot now because we are deciding on DC #2 a son and I've said I do not like the name Kieran any longer (but I would have gone with Kiera if it had been a girl). So, I too, am changing the deal... However, I think the last name issue is of greater weight...

OP: for reference, he wants to use the name Kieran because he has been told by his mother that that was her preference but that his father thought it would be read as Karen; or as my DH puts it, "they didn't have the guts".. His father has caused pain and trouble for the last 25 years and mother is the anchor for 5 children and their families...

In NY I don't think you can do two last names without a hyphen. We made my last name one of DS's middle names and I hyphenated when we got married.

My friend's daughter is Beatrix, but they have quirky names for their entire (very large) brood. It kind of goes with their family style, but not everyone can pull it off. They're also British, which makes it seem less preciously contrived somehow.

I really want to like it... Just not sure I'm there yet. I think that once it was associated with an adorable loving baby then I would love the name. I really liked uncommon yet traditional names like Charlotte, Evelyn, Helen and Clara but they have gotten so much more popular I've been looking for new names - Beatrix is one I'm considering too. Definitely think Beatrix is better than Beatrice!!

I always went with a female OBs, and switched to a male one after a friend's referral. I didn't feel comfortable at first but tried to get used to him, then there were some inappropriate "guy" jokes that made me feel uncomfortable. Now, I am back with a female OB and feel much more at ease. Just my experience though. Many people are fine with male OBs.

i have no suggestions on what you should name your child, but I can advise you not to feel rushed to name the baby after s/he is born. you have until you leave the hospital (and probably beyond that). take your time and don't give in to the pressure of the doctors/nurses, the hospital, and your family to name the child right now. i didn't know what i wanted to name my first, but i felt this pressure and i ended up going with a name in the delivery room and i wouldn't have chosen had i given it more time.

If you're hoping to go into labor naturally, then do not get induced or schedule a c-section. Seems pretty easy to me.

I was a scheduled induction with with #2 seven weeks ago about a week before my due date. Started pitocin, doctor broke my water. Labor was relatively easy - had to have them turn off the epidural when I pushed because I couldn't feel the contraction to help me push. The whole process took 7 hours.

I went early with my 1st and my delivery was very fast. My doctor was supportive of the induction as long as my body was "ready". I found it easier to help plan what to do with my older dc. I had a great experience and if we do have #3 I would do it again.

There's no reason for a C if you are healthy and have no complications. Fine if you want an elective C - but don't let someone talk you into it if it's not something you want on your own.

I am doing this with No 2 a day before my due date (hopefully next week). It'll make life easier in terms of lining up the much-needed help and having someone stay with our older child. Also, I am really stressed about going into labor on new years eve and having to deliver in a place full of drunk partiers (who tend to flood ERs and overwhelm hospitals) and junior drs who are stuck working on NYE. My first child was a very easy L&D with a fairly large baby, this has been a very smooth pregnancy and so my dr is OK with this.

OP here I mean I was offered an induction. I was wondering about the scheduling thing. I have heard of people electing c sections in that a myth? I am definately not getting a c - nor was i offered one unless I need it!

If you're a FTM and you are induced, you are more likely to end up with a C-section than if you let labor start on its own.

But why would they offer to induce you for no medical reason? That would be a red flag to me that the doctors are more interested in their own convenience than letting me labor and deliver on my body's own tineline. Inductions should be used when the natural timeline breaks down, not to make birth fit on some arbitrary timeline.

was offered but not pushed. I am maybe over eager to give birth and meet my baby. Is there a difference being induced if you are first time vs already had a baby?

the difference is that if you are a first time mom and you get induced you will never experience normal labor and you will need an epidural. When you're induced the pain of the contractions goes from 0 to 60 in no time at all and you won't be able to handle it. If it happens naturally you build up a resistance to the pain somewhat. You may still want the epi, but you won't need it from the beginning, and the less time you are on the drugs the greater your chances are to avoid a c-section.

Nerissa Guballa is amazing. I have 1yo twins. she watched my pgcy like a hawk and when I had complications made a great judgment call. As a result she delivered healthy twins at 36weeks and we avoided NICU. Plus she is extremely approachable and nice.

This test was just launched in October of this year. It is available to whomever wants to pay for it, so not sure why you think it has to be a NJ doctor. Unless of course the company has yet to finalize their NY licensure (NY requires special licensure for laboratories that other states do not) and therefore cannot be ordered by a NY doctor at this time. This test is still a risk assessment tool (and only for Down syndrome). It has both a false positive and a false negative rate. The company is sEquenome. There is more info on their website. If you want 100% yes or no answer you'll have to have a chromosome analysis by amnio or CVS. If you're comfortable with risk assessment (and a lab that just opened 6wks ago) then MaterniT21 may be what you need. I'd discuss with your doctor and with a Genetic Counselor.

It doesn't matter if insurance covers it or not unless you understand the information that you get from the test. It is again a risk assessment. The only way to know for certain re: Downs syndrome is chromosome analysis (or prenatal microarray). If you're comfortable with risk assessment it may be a reasonable test (although again, the test is brand new and I don't think the lab has a history of doing clinical diagnosis). If you're conisdering it you should talk to a genetic counselor, not your OB.

"risk assessment" is probably the wrong term. Just want to clarify that I mean this test has a false positive rate as well as a false negative rate. Please be advised of it's limitations.

you made a comment about why I think it has to be a NJ doctor and I explained why. the only way I will do it is if insurance covers it, but thanks for giving your advice re: the test itself.

I think you really need to research this test more before you make a decision. Insurance coverage should be a factor perhaps but the not primary in prenatal genetic testing decisions. also think you have some things mixed up, just because your insurance only covers it if it is ordered by a NJ doctor doesn't mean that this is true for everyoen. Everyone's health care policy is differrnt.

that isn't an insurance rule, it is what the company itself clarified to me on a few occassions. Since NJ is permitted to offer it, a NJ doctor must prescribe it! SO, I do know what I am talking about.

You are missing my point. Figure out what information the test gives you and whether or not you want that information and will be satisfied with that information. THEN decide if it is worth it to you based on the cost/insurance coverage. Geez. You're a difficult persont o deal with. You asked for opinons on the TEST not on the payment plan. You're not even intersted in what the etst is all about, just arguing about insurance and coverage. You're a pill. I was just trying to help you. Truly, you're a pill.

Frankly you don't know what you're talking about. The test is availabe in 20metropolitan areas int eh US. Other people can have the test done, but obviously the doctor ordering has to be licesnced int he state where he/she is practicine. NYCity must not be one of the avialable areas (most likely due to weird NYState licensing rules for genetic testing) but NJ is. so the doctor ordering it has to be licensed in NJ. However, I can get the test here in Chicago and my friend had it done last week in CA. Insurance can cover it or not cover it as they see fit. EVERYONE's insurance plan is different.

Just to clarify for all of you, Diagnostic testing goes through a similar approval process as do pharmaceuticals. They are not governed by the FDA but rather CLIA. Typically when a diagnostic is approved by CLIA, 49 states yield to that approval and allow availability in their state. New York, however, requires it's own seperate approval process. This process can take as long as a year after the diagnostic test is approved in all other states. In that time, no NY facility is allowed to process an order for that test, a NY physician cannot order that test, no matter where the blood is drawn (even in another state), if your insurance is based out of NY then you are not permitted to have your blood drawn for that test in any other state where it may be available. The companies that offer these tests are well aware of these laws and are know that anything that "slips through the cracks" could result in a delayed or denial of approval altogether. Hope that helps.

I had this test in March 2012. I see a doctor affiliated with Weill Cornell and she sent me to a genetic counselor at the hospital who offered the test and drew blood. She took my credit card number in case our insurance, Aetna, did not cover it. They covered 80% and I'm not sure if they will bill us for the rest. The test was $435 in all, and they draw 2 vials of blood. Results are supposed to take 10 business days but mine came back in 6. My doctor said I was the first patient of hers to take it, but she read the research and is impressed with the science, for what it's worth.
