[ - ] Hi Chicago moms - hope someone can help me plan a trip in a couple of weeks. We are coming to Chicago for nearly a week for a work event in early June, bringing our almost 3 year old and 1 year old daughters(and babysitter for part of the week). We are staying at the Fairmont, so am hoping for some advice for 1) things our nanny can do with the kids while we are working for two days and then 2) the best things for us to do as a family the other days - was planning on the nanny taking them to the aquarium and/or children's museum, but is that a real pain from the hotel? Also, any places for a birthday dinner for my 3 year old? (Her birthday is the week after, so we thought we might start the celebration while away.) Thanks! 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Don't do Field Museum - it's basically a "dead zoo". But the Shedd Aquarium is incredible! But get there before opening - loooooooong lines to get in, but worth it. Go to the Sears tower (now called the Willis tower). On the observation floor, they have glass bottom rooms you can walk out into - so so awesome! Eat breakfast at Yolk - it's across from the museum campus. ALso, Navy Pier is fun for kids. Ferris Wheel and tons of other cool things to see/do/eat. Enjoy! [ Reply | More ]

I generally agree with the suggestions above, though I personally found Navy Pier to be over-run and touristy - if you go mid-day on a weekday, it shouldn't be as bad. Be sure to check on the Lincoln Park Zoo too. [ Reply | More ]

Heroin was prevalent (or at least reasonably easy to get) at my college campus in the 90s (in Chicago). I'm sure any teen could get it if they were sufficiently motivated to seek it out - not sure it would actually fall in your lap though. Marijuana seems to be the most prevalent at the HS in my burb. I am in NYC, but I was speaking with a friend who works at one of the above-mentioned Chicago schools just the other day about the shocking levels of abuse of adderal (spell?). What disturbed her the most was how many parents were actually giving their children the drug (lying about symptoms to get a prescription). Apparently, it is a nationwide problem, but she is personally seeing it at her school. [ Reply | More ]

Public. There is not a private school culture in Chicago like Manhattan, but the ones you hear over and over are Parker, Latin and Lab - there are other goods onesI'm not thinking of I'm sure. I think a lot of it will depend on where you live and what sort of commute you're willing to tolerate. Honestly if you're in a good public district I'd do that, at least for elementary. There are excellent elementary schools in Chicago - MS and HS is where it gets dicey, and at that point you can reconsider private or go to the burbs. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] On NPN: Ever get the feeling that no one on that Board has any experience with a person who makes less than 100k a year? 1 Reply [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Sorry, what is NPN? And yes, I get the feeling that many (most?) on this board have little experience with financial struggle. That being said, I've read many comments that show solidarity with the interests of the LMC and those in poverty. I, for one, am seriously struggling financially. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] More on Direct Effects. Now that it appears that Michelle is no longer able to spearhead this organization, is anyone else going to step forward and take it on? I think we are all in agreement that this is a wonderful idea, Michelle has preexisting relationships, and it is labor intensive, but manageable. 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't know anything further, but I'm guessing that if her life is in turmoil that she won't have a lot of time/energy to run a time consuming charity. I don't think Michelle has a "lock" on poor schools. [ Reply | More ]

I've heard she has nearly 8000 kids already covered and is actually seeking out additional schools as she has an abundance of donors. God bless that woman, she is in my prayers. All of you who sit in judgement of her will surely know how it feels some day. [ Reply | More ]

MY MOM JUST DIDNT CALL ME A BABY BUT TOLD ME I BELONG IN PAMPERS AGAIN look people heard her call me a baby in mcdonalds and tell me that she was going to get me diapers and a crib for what i did. i have witnessess dont you think that would help with soical servcies. its not fair it was only ketchup we threw on people and the people in front of us were old like in 60s they wouldnt even know it was on there clothes if my mom didnt say anything. its not fair you know. i dont want to sound like a whinny baby . she had to pay 45 bucks for the clothes i ruined but that was her choice. BUT NO OTHER MOM WOULD TELL ME THAT I SHOULD BE IN DIAPERS AND NEED A BOTTLE ONLY MINE DOES THAT. thats how un cool she is.. IT WAS ONLY MCDONALDS NO PLACE FANCY AND IT WAS KETCHUP. her telling everyone im a baby and belong in pampers and stuff was foul you know and a bunch of lies. no one got hurt it was only ketchup. cause of her people think i need pampers on me now. she needs to chill the out. also, it's hard to believe that a 15 year old could write so badly. you don't have time to go to macdonald's. you should be at home working on your grammar and punctuation. [ Reply | More ]
