Don't know if this has any bearing on decisions but Sharon is a big Jewish town with big influx of Asian and Indian families. Sharon is Jewish but unless you have a problem with it, there won't be a problem. As I said, it's a very open and welcoming town. We're anything but Jewish and we love it here. In Boston, there are many options in the burbs. Good schools in Lexington, Sudbury, Weston, Arlington, and others. BPS is more challenging, although some excellent schools, because of the lottery system. All of the aforementioned are highly family friendly suburbs. Brookline also, but that is a bit more urban (in a good way), known for an excellent PS system. Nannies (we have a college grad we adore, former preschool teacher), found through word of mouth. Many good leads through gardenmoms - the boston answer to UB. Very best of luck to you. [ Reply | More ]

Nanny here: I live in NYC now, but I used to live in Boston. I always got my jobs off of list serves but I believe there is an agency called Beacon Hill Nannies, or Beacon Nannies. You should have no problem finding a nanny with a college degree who also drives. You will have to pay at least $15 an hour (even for full time) for this, probably closer to $18. There is much greater access to daycare in Boston so nannies are strictly seen as a luxury. [ Reply | More ]

ITA, not a nanny culture at all. In fact where I am, in a pretty affluent Boston suburb, it's considered a bit snooty to use the term nanny at all. For whatever reason, it's just a very conspicuous and ostentatious term here. We do au pair, babysitter, sitter or housekeeper (housekeepers often watch kids). Housecleaners or cleaners or heavy cleaners come to clean your house. [ Reply | More ]

I could be wrong, but considering they don't ever even meet with the kids, it's probably only space restrictive (i.e., a lottery). I'm sure they turn families away for that reason, but there's always another alternative. Basically, in terms of competition, everyone has an equal chance. [ Reply | More ]

Or Arlington(it is really beautiful there) You get alot more for your money, less crime as well as lower car insurance rates. Arlington is just North of Cambridge [ Reply | More ]

I don't know B'lyn Heights but I agree here. Cambridge schools are a total mixed bag and you pay sooooo much just for the privilege of being in 02138. Are you thinking public or private? West Newton is awesome not sure sure whether it's remotely Brooklyn-y--it is after all "the safest city in America." [ Reply | More ]

Don't move to Cambridge. Save the difference in overrated real estate, get a much nicer home, and buy a car with the difference to park at the train. Trying to insist on T access will kill you. Not worth it. [ Reply | More ]

Most families go out to the suburbs are certain areas of Cambridge. Pvt school? Then maybe Back Bay. Arlington is a more urban suburb..not sure about the schools. Lexington, Brookline, some parts of Jamaica Plane...very differ from NY suburbs. IMO, more accessible to the city and a bit less stratified. As others have said, get your sorry tail up there and see for yourself. [ Reply | More ]
