Concord. Hands down. Had a great experience with my own dd. No one else will provide the services, even though other districts will pay lip service to it. Only Concord walks the talk.

Sharon is about a half hour south of Boston, but the train goes right there. Excellent schools. Franklin and Foxboro are also good, and have good train access.

Do you live in Mass? Are you poor? Franklin & foxboro do not have good schools!! They are rated 36 & 66 in the state!! Sharon is good, so are Dover (not really south), cohasset, duxbury...

Mass rankings: 1)Sturgis (Hyannis), 2) Boston Latin* (Boston & famous in national listings for decades), 3) Hopkinton, 4)Belmont. 5) Weston, 6) Dover*, 7)Sharon* for starters. There are accessible lists with school locations and strengths. Some of the best public schools in the country so you will be fine!

Skeptical OR--they're actually from US news and world report. But sturgis is a charter school with an IB curriculum. Hyannis is a pretty tough place to live year round, I think. And yeah--where's Acton-box borough and all the usual suspects?

I'd say Sharon as well if you're looking at south of Boston and public. Wonderful, if small, town. Kids are REALLY into sports and sports clubs. Also, if you're looking for good/great Math tutoring, look into Russian School of Math. Branches all over Boston, just opened up one in Sharon. We've lived here for 4 yrs and love it. Questions?

Don't know if this has any bearing on decisions but Sharon is a big Jewish town with big influx of Asian and Indian families. Also has one of the largest Mosques in N.E. and a very welcoming (liberal) Catholic church. Religion and culture don't really seem to get in the way of people coming together here which, I think, is one of Sharon's biggest attributes.

Sharon is Jewish but unless you have a problem with it, there won't be a problem. As I said, it's a very open and welcoming town. We're anything but Jewish and we love it here. That said, the people we bought from needed something more WASP-y so they moved to Hingham. Decent schools there and cute town but people are nowhere near as friendly and outgoing. Same for Duxbury.

Yacht clubs are all different. Some are really laid back and so long as you pay your dues, do your work assignment, etc. they'd love to have you. Others are as snooty as Mainline Country Clubs. When I was in grad school I crewed out of one for the booze cruises on Thursday nights and it was a blast. The YC in my home town growing up was a bunch of strivers who would have been better off in power boats.

From the suburbs. Brookline schools have a great reputation. It is def not NY but Boston is a good city with lots to offer. Parks, museums, shopping, some restaurants, and tons of great colleges. Not as dense as NY and not so many high rises. What would make you like it?

If I were moving to Boston, I would do everything in my power to get my sons into Roxbury Latin. Tuition is only $20K per year (they use their endowment to fund costs), 35% of their student body still receives FA and it is the best motherfucking school in the country. Everything else would be secondary.

In Boston, there are many options in the burbs. Good schools in Lexington, Sudbury, Weston, Arlington, and others. BPS is more challenging, although some excellent schools, because of the lottery system.
All of the aforementioned are highly family friendly suburbs. Brookline also, but that is a bit more urban (in a good way), known for an excellent PS system.
Nannies (we have a college grad we adore, former preschool teacher), found through word of mouth. Many good leads through gardenmoms - the boston answer to UB. Very best of luck to you.

Nanny here: I live in NYC now, but I used to live in Boston. I always got my jobs off of list serves but I believe there is an agency called Beacon Hill Nannies, or Beacon Nannies. You should have no problem finding a nanny with a college degree who also drives. You will have to pay at least $15 an hour (even for full time) for this, probably closer to $18. There is much greater access to daycare in Boston so nannies are strictly seen as a luxury.

ITA, not a nanny culture at all. In fact where I am, in a pretty affluent Boston suburb, it's considered a bit snooty to use the term nanny at all. For whatever reason, it's just a very conspicuous and ostentatious term here. We do au pair, babysitter, sitter or housekeeper (housekeepers often watch kids). Housecleaners or cleaners or heavy cleaners come to clean your house.

I could be wrong, but considering they don't ever even meet with the kids, it's probably only space restrictive (i.e., a lottery). I'm sure they turn families away for that reason, but there's always another alternative. Basically, in terms of competition, everyone has an equal chance.

I don't know B'lyn Heights but I agree here. Cambridge schools are a total mixed bag and you pay sooooo much just for the privilege of being in 02138. Are you thinking public or private? West Newton is awesome not sure sure whether it's remotely Brooklyn-y--it is after all "the safest city in America."

You just asked this question yesterday. Get on a plane and check it out for yourself. If you think Boston is like NYC, think again. It's not.

Most families go out to the suburbs are certain areas of Cambridge. Pvt school? Then maybe Back Bay. Arlington is a more urban suburb..not sure about the schools. Lexington, Brookline, some parts of Jamaica Plane...very differ from NY suburbs. IMO, more accessible to the city and a bit less stratified. As others have said, get your sorry tail up there and see for yourself.

Thanks people! Very helpful! Obviously I can get on a plane and see for myself. That is not the same as getting the opinion/inside line from people who have actually lived there.

OP: crap not typing well. How much should it cost to have the floors sanded and 3 coats? We are getting numbers all over the place from $1.50 a square foot to $4 a square foot. 2500 sq foot house and we want to do the whole thing.
