Has it become unacceptable to eat peanut butter in public? DD was eating a pb&j at a store today, and a woman stopped me to lecture me about peanut allergies. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Inconsiderate of others what a silly CUNT. You should jump off a bridge. You are the bad parent here! You think feeding a hungry child is inconsiderate?!?! How about you learn how an allergic reaction occurs before you get all pissed, a child has to ingest the allergen ( peanuts in this case ) to have an allergic reaction. So be educated before you get on here because you are just bored. You're the inconsiderate one because you would rather be lazy and not clean the cart , which you already should do no mater what especially if your child has an allergy. [ Reply | More ]

Actually that is not true at all... I have a severe allergy to shellfish, and I found out when I was making a shrimp bisque in culinary school, so just by touching the shellfish I reacted, and bad... Then a few years later I was at my sisters house and she was steaming lobster, and just from the steam vapors I had a reaction... So it reality you can have a reaction from just the peanut dust... Oh and as a paramedic for over 20 yrs, I've seen this with others as well, so it wasn't just my bad luck... But I agree, there are way to many overreacting about this momma feeding her child... Really, because you know this woman and her child?? Wow, what a friend... Oh wait, your just saying that from experience because YOUR kids are nasty and would smear their food all over... I get it now... Well why don't you worry about teaching your kids how to eat, and let this momma take care of her own child... OH and BTW, they sell countless items with PB at Target, so should Target and all other stores stop selling these items because people have allergies?? I think not.. As a person with a SEVERE allergy to shellfish I know what I need to do in order to prevent a reaction, including asking about how my food is cooked at a restaurant and here's one for you, I wipe down the handle of any shopping cart I may use, especially at a grocery store as most sell shellfish... So I'm guessing the parents of all these kids do the same, because it is THEIR responsibility to keep THEIR child safe, NOT some stranger... Kind of like you taking care of your own child... Imagine that. [ Reply | More ]

I eat peanut butter sandwiches in public quite often. I also eat peanuts when they are passed out on the airplane. I see many other people doing the same. Exactly! One of my son's is 17, and literally since he could eat solids, one of his fave foods was New England Clam Chowder. We were out to eat about a year & 1/2 ago and he was having a bowl. Had a bad reaction - tongue & lips swelled up & were itchy and his throat felt "tight". Stopped eating it, got him home (right down the street) & Benadryl stopped the reaction. Brought him to Dr.'s & they said he has a critical allergy to shellfish - no more "chowdah" for him! [ Reply | More ]

Actually, she is correct! According to a Kings College, London study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, they found that eating peanuts in infancy prevents subsequent development of the allergy. The fact that many parents are afraid to give kids peanuts/PB under 3 because they are afraid they will have a reaction is one of the reasons they are becoming allergic. We ALL grew up on PB, and other than a cousin who had a severe reaction at 1YO (eating a PB&J, by the way), I don't remember a single other person in my childhood having an allergy to it. Now? Can't stick a leg out without bumping into someone who has an allergy. [ Reply | More ]

I'm sure she didn't "LET" her child smear it. Secondly, are you also on the milk/gluten/shellfish/etc. police? There are far more people, in general, with allergies other than PB, and no one watches out for them! Your kid with the allergy, your problem. Whether the child ate it there, in the car, or at home, there is still the potential to get PB particles on the cart. Let's be serious here. Also, fact-check before all you holier-than-thou PB police chase down innocent moms & kids for their severe law-breaking lol. Everyone is yapping about this "MAJOR" issue - did any of you care to check & see that, according to The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network, the total number of people in the world with a peanut or tree nut allergy is 0.6 percent. Take out the tree nut and it's probably about 0.3%. It's also kind of a D move to rag on others you have no business ragging on... [ Reply | More ]

The hypocrisy on here is disgusting. You are so considerate of others' children that you demand no peanuts be consumed in public. Yet, you show zero consideration to OP and her being wrongfully harangued in public by some stranger, ripper her apart; zero consideration of her circumstances. And over what? I know of no case whatsoever where a child had a reaction by coming into contact with a cart, a door handle or handrail outside of a food-related setting, like a box store. This is a fantasy to excuse your own despicable hubris. You accuse OP of having no consideration -- you hypocrites. [ Reply | More ]

oh my....you parents have lost your minds.... If i want to feed my child PB and Jelly, Cheese, Yogurt, Chocolate, Chips, Tofu, Soy beans, quinoa or Candy while I am shopping I will. If I have a child that has a PB allergy so severe that contact with it will cause an emergency situation then I become responsible to assure his/her environment is safe by wiping down the seat before I put my child in it. Go ahead mom...and feeding your child in a shopping cart - that's your opinion...as a parent the wonder of it is that it is MY decision what I will do - can we focus on real issues - like child abuse, neglect?????? How do you know what was possible or impossible for this mom that day?? Maybe her child was diabetic and needed to eat within a certain timeframe after being given her insulin, which she could have done in the bathroom at Target.. so eating before was IMPOSSIBLE... and because she knew she was going to be at Target for quite some time, it would have been IMPOSSIBLE to feed her after, as her blood sugar would have dropped quickly after getting her insulin... So why not worry about your OWN kids and your OWN life and let this mom do the same... Second hand smoke is harmful for every human being, so it is prohibited in many public places officially, there are rules and signs and you can get penalized. That is patently false. Between .6% - 1.3% of people have a peanut allergy. Between .4% and .6% have a tree nut allergy. Adding those two together doesn't beat the 2.8% of people with seafood allergies. Milk and egg allergies are also very common, in young children especially, with 1% - 2% having reactions. You or your kid has allergies? Then for God's sake, unless you enter a laboratory clean room, assume the risks when you venture out into the world, just like everyone else. How did people become such withering snowflakes? As for the dirty eating environment, yes a shopping cart is dirty; not the most sanitary place to dine. However, immune systems need a work out. Just like your non-excersizing, video game-play obese children. [ Reply | More ]

That was the norm in earlier generations, up through the 1970s and 80s. And do you know what it did to our intestines the first times eating fast food? The squints! Good Lord the fact this is even an issue makes me weep for the next generations. What is even worse than snowflakes? Because that is what all these mom shamers are raising. You do realize Target sells peanuts? Are parents not allowed to feed hungry babies or toddlers in public now? Yes obviously you should clean up any mess you make which she clearly stated she had but if your child is so allergic to something they can’t be in the same building where someone else might be eating said item then you need to just keep that child home. If you are worried about your child licking shopping carts then I would suggest you don’t put them in a shopping cart because they will pick up far worse than residual peanut butter. What the hell happened to self responsibility? I have a kid with food allergies and guess what? I don’t freaking feed her those foods! I don’t insist that my other kids or the public in general can’t eat those foods! If you are so irresponsible as a parent you have to bash and shame perfect strangers for allowing their child to eat something that your child can’t have then you really had no business having children. This is insane. Pay attention to your own damn kid and you need to return your parenting participation trophy. [ Reply | More ]

In medicine, the hygiene hypothesis states a lack of early childhood exposure to infectious agents, symbiotic microorganisms (such as the gut flora or probiotics), and parasites increases susceptibility to allergic diseases by suppressing the natural development of the immune system. In particular, the lack of exposure is thought to lead to defects in the establishment of immune tolerance. The hygiene hypothesis has also been called the "biome depletion theory" and the "lost friends theory". [ Reply | More ]

The original formulation of the hygiene hypothesis dates from 1989 when David Strachan proposed that lower incidence of infection in early childhood could be an explanation for the rapid 20th century rise in allergic diseases such as asthma and hay fever. It is now also recognised that the "reduced microbial exposure" concept applies to a much broader range of chronic inflammatory diseases than asthma and hay fever, which includes diseases such as type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis, and also some types of depression and cancer. Although the idea that exposure to certain infections may decrease the risk of allergy is not new, Strachan was one of the first to formally propose it, in an article published in the British Medical Journal in 1989. This article proposed to explain the observation that hay fever and eczema, both allergic diseases, were less common in children from larger families, which were presumably exposed to more infectious agents through their siblings, than in children from families with only one child. The hypothesis was extensively investigated by immunologists and epidemiologists and has become an important theoretical framework for the study of chronic inflammatory disorders. It explains the increase in allergic diseases that has been seen since industrialization and the higher incidence of allergic diseases in more developed countries. Epidemiological studies continue to confirm the protective effect of large family size and of growing up on a farm. However, exposure to common childhood infections such as chickenpox or measles is not thought to be protective. [ Reply | More ]

For allergic disease, the most important times for exposure are: early in development; later during pregnancy; and the first few days or months of infancy. Exposure needs to be maintained over a significant period. This fits with evidence that delivery by Caesarean section may be associated with increased allergies, whilst breastfeeding can be protective. The extent to which exposures need to be maintained after infancy and whether these conditions could be managed by on-going exposure is as yet unknown. [ Reply | More ]

The hygiene hypothesis is supported by epidemiological data. Studies have shown that various immunological and autoimmune diseases are much less common in the developing world than the industrialized world and that immigrants to the industrialized world from the developing world increasingly develop immunological disorders in relation to the length of time since arrival in the industrialized world. This is true for asthma and other chronic inflammatory disorders. [ Reply | More ]

While no hygiene-related treatments are part of the standard of care, various approaches are under investigation. Helminth therapy is one alternative. Probiotics (drinks or foods) have never been shown to reintroduce microbes to the gut. As yet, therapeutically relevant microbes have not been specifically identified. Lifestyle changes could increase microbial exposure, but whether this on balance improves the balance of risks remains the subject of research. Proposals include natural childbirth, sustained breast feeding and physical interaction between siblings, and encouraging children to spend more time in "uncleaned" outdoor environments. Should these therapies become accepted, public policy implications include providing green spaces in urban areas or even providing access to agricultural environments for children. [ Reply | More ]

It is oversimplification, I believe it's not related to our lack of exposure to airborne or surface germs, but more related to change in our food biology. There plenty of developed world women giving natural birth, BFing for years and not being paranoid about germs and yet they have kids with allergies and inflammatory diseases. Our food is just not what it used to be. Lots of genetically engineered products, use of chemicals and depleted soil and general food manufacturing is probably the more important culprit as it's pervasive. [ Reply | More ]

Vitamin D deficiency, which is more prevalent in urban populations in developed countries, has been associated with the severity of allergic diseases and proposed to be a major factor. Adults eating nuts is slightly different than a toddler eating peanut cheetos-like puffs that get everywhere! And these days, many airlines have stopped serving peanuts, and some will not serve peanuts in a buffer area if there is someone who is allergic on the plane. i absolutely do. They should have at least made the particular class peanut free. The subject came up at our class' orientation day, and the parent of the child with the allergy mentioned that in another class, the parents collectively agreed not to send their kids in with peanut products because of an alergy. One parent mentioned that their kids like peanut butter every day, and the subject dragged on. They had to seat the allergic child seperately at a table with kids without peanut products every day. The teachers also had to check everyones lunch daily, and we had to mark the lunches "no peanuts, etc". What a shitshow. I felt awful for the parents because the allergy was serious. PP: my son is in middle school now and the school system isn’t nut-free, as a whole, but I think almost every class he’s been in, since K, has been nut-free because a child in the class was allergic. The cafeterias, however, are a free for all and I don’t think they have nut-free tables. Obviously it's not some sort of prohibited substance not allowed in public, you are making it an issue where there is none, just because you were confronted by someone. Nobody expects you to stop eating nut based foods in public or carry them, because people with deadly on-contact allergies are very few and usually are equipped to handle emergencies. I know only a couple of kids with nut allergies and they are not contact allergies, only by ingestion, their parents carry epi-pens everywhere, I can only imagine the parents of kids with contact allergies of a deadly kind would take even more precautions. Nuts are served everywhere, sold on street carts, given on airplanes. Once in a while you would have a person flying with severe contact allergies and the flight attendants are warned to not serve nuts of these flights. If a very large percentage of population somehow develops deadly contact allergies, guess what? It will become prohibited. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think you did anything wrong (outside of seeking comment via social media from a public that enjoys brutalizing people in an anonymous forum.) My son has life threatening tree nut allergies. I do not expect the rest of the world to change to accommodate him. Just because he can't eat tree nuts, doesn't mean people who can should only enjoy them in the privacy of their home vehicle, etc. As a parent, I have taught my son to be able to identify the nuts he is allergic to, to read food labels and to ask questions about food preparation/ingredients before eating items in restaurants, at school or at homes other than mine. We both carry Epi Pens and we wipe down public items (shopping cart handles, etc.) before he touches them to avoid a potential allergic reaction. If you want to feed your child a PB&J in a shopping cart, then go ahead, and the woman who came up to scold you should mind her own business. Word of advice....next time trust your parenting instincts versus looking for validation through social media. As you can see from the comments to your post...in general, the public is brutal and unkind when expressing their opinion and expects you to change to accommodate their opinion. [ Reply | More ]

Hello, I ran across this article on Apple news and decided to visit the post. These comments are unbelievable. My daughter, who is now 13, is allergic to pork, beef, eggs, soy, and PEANUTS. She has an Epi Pen because she has Level IV allergies. We have know about her allergies since she was 2yrs old. I have no problem with your child eating peanut butter in the store. I am fully aware of my daughters needs and triggers and I always prepare and use precautions for her in public, school, parties, play dates etc. I’ve never expected others to modify their lives and desires on our behalf. YES, all mums feed kids on the go. It’s unavoidable. All of these people are saying you are a terrible mum but I think it’s hogwash. I see babies and children bare feet in public and walking and sitting on dirty floors. I see them crawling on floors in public and lying with their faces on the floor almost daily. Don’t even let me get started on the filthy pacifiers that get dropped and picked up before being pushed right back into a kids mouth. Are all these parents terrible parents as well? Really people, are they horrible and unfit? I think not. No one is perfect and I don’t know a single mum that hasn’t done something that another mum would cringe at. My advice: don’t post questions to blogs looking for support or validation. Raise your children in line with your values and shake off the foolishness and hateful comments posted on this thread. Sincerely, Imperfect mum and proud of it. [ Reply | More ]

All these people attacking OP are RIDICULOUS. OP did NOTHING WRONG, and I'd feed my son a PB&J in a shopping cart without hesitation. In fact, I might just prepare a PB&J for our next trip to the store... The parent/guardian of any child with a severe allergy should be prepared for public spaces, i.e., such parent/guardian should have an Epi-pen or similar precaution ready, and the overwhelming majority of such parents/guardians are, in fact, prepared. The only potentially irresponsible thing (or "D move" as one person put it) is for the parent/guardian of the child with a severe allergy to not be prepared for an encounter with the allergen. It is extremely, unbelievably rare that ANYONE would have a true allergic reaction to smelling or touching peanut butter. That kind of reaction is, in the vast majority of cases, purely psychogenic. It's paranoia. Hysteria. Anyway, it's the responsibility of the person with the allergy (or their parent(s)) to be prepared if they are exposed. Not the public's responsibility to cater to every possibility. Keep on eating peanuts in public! [ Reply | More ]

Since when do kids not eat anywhere they are. A church pew, a grocery store, wherever and whenever. They eat baby snacks and cheerios at any given time. Don't all parents make sure to have snacks available at all times to appease their children while out and about? Crazy to vilify her for letting her child eat! If someone was complaining about a woman breastfeeding in the middle of the store all of you hypocrites would be all over that person too - you just thrive on being hateful and nasty. If a parent has a child with allergies to anything it's that parents responsibility to ensure their own child's safety - you can't expect the general public to cater to your child's needs. As a parent of a child with a peanut allergy: It is OUR job to protect her, not or job to blame THEM for not protecting her. We do so by: 1. Working with other parents, family members, and care workers when she will be in CLOSE proximity to people without the allergy who may not know the risk. 2. Preparing the space she is in appropriately by cleaning it as needed to remove any potential residue. Peanut residue is NOT super glue. It is easily removed from tables, chairs, and yes SHOPPING CARTS with a simple wipe down of the cart. 3. Paying attention to her actions and NOT letting her handle, pick up or otherwise touch products that do or may have peanuts in them. The store will not stop selling peanut butter or peanuts, or peanut based snacks and candy. We just don't put them in our cart. 4. Being CONSCIOUSLY aware of those around us that we are in close proximity to that have other allergies, lite shellfish (much more dangerous), kiwi (life threatening), sunflower seeds, and even dairy, and respecting the safety of those people when we are with them. 5. Being CONSCIOUS of when we are going to be in close proximity to other people that we DONT know (airplane, stadium, gym, restaurant) that there may be other allergies around and make every effort not to share food with other kids (which they love to do). I dont consider being in a cart at Target to qualify as CLOSE proximity by any measure... have you seen the size of the average Target?! I do NOT blame the woman, who was NOT given the opportunity to illustrate her entire process. Was she going to clean the cart? Was the little girl messy? Was the PB&J in a bag? My only comment would have been "I know how hard it is when kids are hungry, can you make sure to wipe down the cart after?" We carried food with us for years, because when a child gets hungry... YOU FEED THEM. It doesnt matter where it is, or why, because they dont understand "Meal Time" and schedules until they get older. She did what she had to to take care of her child... and I would do the same. And yes... we have had Epi-Pen incidents with our child. VERY SCARY, but not entirely the fault of the person that gave her the food. We likely did not communicate clearly the risk to her, because NO ONE willfully puts other people at risk... Except that toe head on Pennsylvania Avenue. [ Reply | More ]

If it made your child happy then that’s what counts. The lady had no business coming up to you. She’s 100% in the wrong. Sorry if other kids have allergies but I take peanut butter and honey sandwiches out with us. My kids don’t like turkey and cheese sandwiches. They really just like peanut butter and honey. Never has caused a problem. Keep going for it. I even send my son to school with pb&honey sandwiches. It’s what my very picky eater eats so that’s what I send. [ Reply | More ]

My first instinct with this post is one of horror that my daughter could have come across this cart and had a reaction. My rational mind reminds me that I raised my 19 year old under the thought that this would be her responsibility. My daughter learned to read labels, learned to ask for herself (and did at the age of 4 when she went to a restaurant with her Uncle), learned to protect herself. We didn't ask for or receive a peanut free school, I provided wipes for kids to clean up when they came in from recess/lunch to help with any close contact. I never wanted others to not eat peanut butter. The world will not be as vigilant as she is. It is up to her as an adult to watch out for herself. She has now gone to a foreign country twice, where the diet is high in peanuts and SURVIVED. I believe that if I had been a Mom that put my kid in a bubble, she would have had to deal with a lot more than being in a third world country. [ Reply | More ]

Most people are NOT allergic to PB so, you go girl. We all can't worry about children that aren't ours. It's their responsibility to sanitize the cart before putting their children in it if they have a reason to do so. Some children have compromised immune systems and I'm sure they have put their snotty children in a cart more than one time because we all need to shop from time to time, rain or shine, sick or not. I think a lot of the people here are filthy and disgusting with their mouths and their poor children are in bad hands to begin with. Peanut butter is the least of their problems. How did we all survive, I am 62 and have 6 kids and 14 grandkids with one grandchild with a nut allergy and I keep wipes with me and clean them up as we go, and an epipen. Is that so hard. Kids get dirty and it is the parents and/or grand-parents job to clean them up. Quit criticizing others and take responsibility for yourselves and by the way, mind your own damn business. And if your so damned worried about the shopping carts, clean them first BEFORE you put your own child in it. [ Reply | More ]

If your kid has an allergy, then do what is necessary to take care of them. Expecting the world to cater to you and your needs is selfish. If people choose to adhere to your needs, thats kindness on them. But it shouldnt be expected. What should be expected is for parents to have a plan and be prepared for when their kids need medical assistance. Is it hard? absolutely. But so is life. [ Reply | More ]

I'm allergic to cigarette smoke, and get immediately stuffy whenever someone is around who smells like cigarette smoke. Does that mean anyone who smokes needs to take a shower and refrain from their habit before shopping at Target (or any store) NO!! For the mother who was letting her child enjoy a childhood staple of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich while she shopped-I commend you. Majority of parents these days would just walk over to the concession stand purchasing the junk food offered (popcorn, slush drinks, hot dog, etc). Or they would grab one of those snack size containers of cookies or crackers. You made the decision to give your child something both healthy and filling knowing they would enjoy it. Our role as parents is to attend to the needs of OUR children. It isn't our role as a parent to police other parents children or to keep them safe from harm. It isn't our role to ensure that a random persons child doesn't come into contact with an item they may be allergic to. If we were to do that, then that would require we request the medical background of any child we or our children may come in contact with in our every day life from the random parent in a store to the park and so forth. There is a reason those who suffer from a severe peanut allergy are REQUIRED to carry an EpiPen-it is in case of emergency on the off chance they come into contact with peanuts (or its by products). For those of you attacking the OP, you are part of what is wrong with society these days. Bashing as well as judging a mother because her choice of parenting doesn't conform to yours. It wouldn't matter if she had let her child eat a GoGurt or a box of raisins-you would still attack her. [ Reply | More ]

HEY EVERYONE...IF YOU CANNOT SAY ANYTHING POSITIVE TO ANOTHER PERSON...THEN KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT! YOU DO NOT KNOW EVERY HUMANS MEDICAL INFORMATION ON WHAT THEY WERE DIAGNOSED WITH OR ALLERGIC TOO.. YOU DO NOT HAVE A RIGHT TO SAY ANYTHING ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE NOT A PARENT TRYING TO GIVE ADVISE..UNLESS YOU'RE A CHILD CARE PROVIDER AND AROUND CHILDREN 24/7. BUT TO THE REST OF YOU..SORRY THATS MY #1RULE! IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH SOMEONE, LET THEM KNOW IN A RESPECTFUL WAY, BUT ALSO CONSIDER THE OTHER SIDE REASON ON HOW THE OTHER INDIVIDUAL FEELS AND TRY..I SAID TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHY THEY FEEL OR ACTED THAT WAY. IF YOU CONTINUE TO LIVE YOUR DAYS BY JUST ASSUMING YOU KNOW EVERYTHING,THEN YOU KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING JUST STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM ME! SEE..ITS SIMPLE. TO BE A SMARTASS IN A RESPECTFUL WAY! MY CHILDREN ARE 17MONTHS APART WITH ONE AUTISTIC AND I CREATED DIFFERENT WAYS TO DEAL WITH MY CHILDREN'S BEHAVIOR IN PUBLIC AND UNDERSTOOD HOW MY CHILDREN WILL FEEL OR BEHAVE BEING IN CERTAIN PLACES. ALSO I UNDERSTOOD HOW LONG OF A TIME WE WERE AWAY FROM HOME TO PREVENT CERTAIN DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR. HONESTLY IDC IF IT WAS 5MIN OR 5HRS I ALWAYS HAD BABY WIPES, SANDWICH, PRETZELS,FRUIT, WATER, JUICE BOXES, DIAPERS, FORMULA, BREADING BOOKS, COLORING BOOKS CRAYONS, AND MY FAVORITE EACH CHILD HAD THEIR OWN LEAPDROG DEVICE BUT SHARED GAMES TAKING TURNS EVEN THOUGH I PROVIDED MULTIPLE CHOICES. AND MY BELT IF MY CHILD GOT OUT OF LINE. BUT RARELY USED BECAUSE I HAD MY MOMMY KIT WHICH HELPED ME WITH MY KIDS SO I COULD SPEND MORE TIME FOCUSING ON WHAT I NEEDED TO DO AND FOCUS ON OUR SAFETY. ALOT OF Y'ALL DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR PURSE WALKING TO YOUR CAR WHILE THIEVES WAIT FOR YOUR GUARDS TO BE DOWN TO ROB YOU OR YOU MIGHT FORGET YOUR KEYS OR CREDIT CARD IN THE STORE ESPECIALLY BECAUSE YOUR CHILD IS WHINING.. BECAUSE YOUR NOT PREPARED LIKE THIS MOMS POST WHO HAD A SANDWICH ALREADY PREPARED FOR HUNGRY SITUATIONS SO SHE COULD CONTINUE DOING WHAT SHE CAME TO TARGET TO DO. BUT THAT INDIVIDUAL WHO DECIDED TO THROW THEIR TWO SENSE IN..DID YOU CONSIDER THE FACT YOU DISRUPTED THIS MOMS TRAIN OF THOUGHT AND WASTING HER TIME FOCUSING ON HER CHILD BECAUSE YOU WHERE ITCHING TO JUST SAY SOMETHING. WELL NEXT TIME KEEP WALKING AND WALK YOUR ASS TO THE PHARMACY AISLE AND GET SOME ANTIHISTAMINE MEDICINE FOR THAT ITCH AND DON'T FORGET TO STOP BY HARDWARE AISLE AND GRAB MASKING TAPE AND TAPE YOUR MOUTH SHUT WHILE YOU STAND IN CHECK OUT...REAL MOMS DONT GOT NO TIME FOR ANYONE'S BULLSHIT! I think that person and most the people criticizing you are out of there mind... If they really think there's more germs on a shopping cart than their average dinner table they are crazy especially after using the curtosy wipes supplied... As far as the penut allergy if anyone was that deathly allergic that the slightest bit your child might drop that would have to make contact with the person then they have more problems to worry about rather than your child eating a pb&j such as the aisle of penut butter, the many Asian resteraunts downstairs with penut dishes, etc. Plus they could use the wipes to wipe off the cart as they should if you managed to miss some pb cleaning it after. You're a great mother for letting your child way when they are hungry rather than stress them out on social norms that really are pretty far from normal especially in SF. The fact you were prepared with food for your child and found a great way to let them sit and eat as you got your day tasks done was great. I think you should ignore these people and that rude person who lectured you and do whatever you think is right for your child. Don't let anyone convince you not to do what you believe your child needs you to do because some people might find it disrespectful as that's their own problem having an inability to pass the torch to the next generation. I'm sorry. I feed my kid what I want when I want, and where I want. Your kid has peanut allergy? You ensure its clean. You prevent exposure. Not my problem. No one is worried about my child's exposure to the flu or cold, which can kill too! But, you better believe I am going to make sure my kid is safe from germs. I have a nephew with peanut allergies and his mother does not expect someone to speak for her. She does not expect anyone to coddle or care for HER kid. She makes sure her kid is safe by taking measures to ensure HER child's safety. I'm sorry. This woman did nothing wrong. I am not changing my lifestyle, or that of my child's, for a small percentage of the populations peanut allergy. What am I going to do with my sons bee allergy that can kill him? Kill all bees? This world is getting so ridiculous! "I don't want to ensure my child's safety. Please help MY kid by changing your ways." Educate yourself, please. Don't lecture my choices on my children. Poster, you did nothing wrong. [ Reply | More ]

For the people who are freaking about this and are worried about your "precious little children" Do us a favor. Don't fucking let your kid outside. Ever. FFS you are all fucking idiots for getting outraged NO ONE should have to cater to you or your rugrats. If you don't like that.. it is REALLY simple. Homeschool your kid, put them in a bubble and never ever EVER let them near peanuts. And the 4 year old was being NEAT with the sandwich? I give this mother props! And for the idiots bashing on you.. guess what.. if you lived in the decade that I grew up in you'd be already DEAD (which is a GOOD thing). I grew up without needing helmets while riding bikes, we played outside, we played with firecrackers and guess what.. we SURVIVED. God.. fucking .. idiots. [ Reply | More ]

You guys know that Target sells peanut butter and almost 100 other peanut products. Do you also know that lack of exposure to peanuts is the leading cause of severe peanut allergies? So, you're draconian response to peanuts actually puts more children at risk. Want to get upset at someone? Get upset at the manufacturer of Epi-Pen that charges an astronomical amount for their lifesaving medication for children with peanut allergies. Or we could all just live in fear and blame everyone else for or irrational behavior and live up to the standards of Trump Nation. [ Reply | More ]

Sadly this is all too common in today's world, fortunately there is Grace to overcome and keep moving forward as 'decent' human beings. Not every individual is responsible for another especially when it comes to issues such as this, from the sounds of it many think we should have government take reigns yet again by designating every place to be a "Peanut Free Zone". Just as an example for thought, should we not eat PB&J at family picnics in the park any longer...? I baby sat for a child who was deathly allergic to peanuts, so yes I am aware of it and also cognizant of issue that is why we carried an EpiPen EVERYWHERE!!! Also, in light of this article, it should make us question "why are there so many issues these days with allergies in our children?!" which have seemingly become an epidemic. We need to support one another in finding the root cause of this from a health perspective rather than attack one another on surface <3 [ Reply | More ]

How horrible for people to put down a mother for feeding her child. Maby its hard to get her child to eat and this is the only way. Germs are apart of life as are allergies. And people with said things should know to take more precation. Its not my job to worry about your child as most people seem to do. If its such a big deal, wipe down the cart afterwards. I work at Target, and you want to know how many children are in there snacking on everything? All of them. People want to attack everyone nowdays and its stupid. I see no wrong done. Don’t let others put you down. You did what any mother does! [ Reply | More ]

If they are going to bitch about potentially harming a kid with a nut allergy then I want parents who don't believe in immunizations to keep their kids at home just in case they pick up a preventable disease and may possibly spread it to a baby who isn't old enough for immunizations or an elderly person who's immunization has worn off. Same damn mentality! If YOUR kid is deathly allergic to nuts, then YOU wipe down every surface or keep him at home. Jesus freakin christ. [ Reply | More ]

I never respond to this type of CRAP on Blogs, and such; but get over yourselves people. Granted a PB&J is somewhat out of the norm to be eating in a store, BUT IT IS PERFECTLY FINE!!! If your kid has the issue of allergies, that is up to you to police, not Joe public. What if that woman gave her child, which I have done and others, just a small snack bag of peanuts or cashews, or a store bought snack pack with peanuts in them, or the good old Peanut Butter crackers they sell and are in every kids lunch. Stop complaining what others do, to my knowledge is not against any Target store policy, and deal with your own family or child. If you have that type of family or child, you should be wiping down the carts yourselves anyways, tables at restaurants, etc. Please give this woman a break, find something else to criticize, because that is what people like you do! I am going to chime in here with NO NEGATIVITY at all because honestly from a parent of two boys to another. I have been in your shoes before and even though you feed them before leaving home, you have snacks in your purse just in case something happens between shopping and returning to your destination. in-between that time (you do not know) how long you will shop or if the line is too long (your child could get hungry immediately). No mother (and I don't care who you are), with a toddler wants to hear a tantrum in the store! So you did the same thing I would do and DARE somebody to say something. Your baby was hungry you provided her the food. I have sent my child to school with PB&J sandwiches and told the teacher "if any child has allergies to peanut butter, do not let them sit by him." I am not going to neglect my baby from his favorite snack for the care of others around. If you gave her the sandwich and she did not make a mess then who cares. You should not care what people think about you or the situation, people judge too much these days. Yes, people say "oh its gross" "the cart is dirty", but guess what? If you are riding in a friends car and you child eat in their vehicle you need to say its gross, because germs is on the cart as well as your friend car. Needless to say, you are a great mother please do not pay attention to negativity because adults are cruel and are bullies just like some children (even worse)! [ Reply | More ]

Oh give me a freakin break. 1.1% of the united state's population has a peanut/tree nut allergy and now people have to accommodate to the very small majority?! HA! You better not ever go to a restaurant and order shrimp, a whopping 4% of the population suffer from shellfish allergies. As a parent of a child who has a peanut allergy, shut up and mind your own business. All these keyboard warriors who are most likely childless need to waste their energy on shit that actually matters, like, oh I don't know, homelessness, world hunger, or the fact that 2 million people die each year from dehydration. Get out. [ Reply | More ]

Hey there. All the negativity is stupid. Just continue feeding your child. Might as well continue doing what you are doing. People are allergic to everything. Dairy, seafood, peanuts, GLUTEN. I laughed at gluten. The point is your a mom. Moms are never perfect but they do what they need to do for their kids and everyone else is irrelevant. Next time someone tries to tell you what you are doing wrong becasuse they feel like you are doing something wrong just tell them to mind they own damn business and continue to do you. Literally your not a bitch, your not a crazy person, your not being rude and your not teaching your child to not care about others. People like to judge because they have nothing else to do with themselves and EVERYONE IN THIS WORLD HAS FED THEIR CHILD OUT SIDE THEIR HOMES IN PUBLIC. EVERYONE. Continue being the mother of your child and not care about the negativity. [ Reply | More ]

Hello, I just saw an article about the reactions to your posted question and wanted to clarify the seemingly endless waves of stupidity, that there are other allergies besides peanut allergies, and it is not the responsibility of others to ensure you (or your child) are safe. I am (granted not anaphylactic allergic) allergic to most perfumes (sad, but true story), and get rashes and severe headaches / nausea from it. I am not about to go around telling people they are monsters for wearing cologne or perfume because I develop rashes if you were to by any chance brush up against me. Not to mention, if you are anaphylactic allergic to anything, you should have an epi pen on your person at all times (as in the parents should have one for their kids). You really never know when you might by chance come in contact with your allergen, and need to administer you or your child with medication. Basically, bottom line is, where do you draw the line if you all start going bonkers on peanut butter? How about you and/or your kids can no longer eat ice cream in public spaces because there are children with anaphylactic allergies to dairy? No dogs are allowed in public anymore! Forget about walking them. [ Reply | More ]

I created an account just so I can respond. To the mother who fed your child PB&J in Target. I support you for feeding your child. I love Pb&J. In our overly rated G society we can't do anything without being critical. We can't protect our children from everything and no matter things will happen. I don't have children but I have many friends who do. I have however worked with children almost all of my life. I've seen children eat off the floor, after each other, and a million other things that would be considered unsafe, unruly and deemed to have learned the poor habit from their parents. Next thing you know you will ask the lady why she didn't kill the bees in her back yard. IF these kids live in bubbles then they will never experience anything. Lest than 1% suffer from Peanut allergy affixation(sp). People eat seafood in public, pizza, and everything else and people still have allergies. I'm not inconsiderate or cold hearted but hell you can't stop everything. If you all are so worried just keep your kids in the house. 1 life can't be lived according to each of the remaining 300 plus million. Sincerely, Trick love the kids. [ Reply | More ]

I too, created an account just so I can reply. To the mom that fed the child a PB&J: Good for you! Especially if your child has been brought up to be neat! For those of you that are condemning her: Have you ever given your child a balloon? SHAME ON YOU!! My son has a latex allergy! It is the same sort of thing. We all have allergies to something, and we cannot see all, know all. When my son was young, if invited to a birthday party, he could not go, if there were ordinary balloons. Mylar was fine, but expensive. If there were balloons, he could not go. I never condemned the parents for giving their children balloons, nor asked them to restrict THEIR children. You all should get off her back over a PB&J. If the peanut allergies are that severe, the parents of the allergic child should keep them home. Most stores with delicatessens use peanut oil for frying. The list goes on and on. Leave this poor mother alone! [ Reply | More ]

All you mother (used nicely). Need to get over a mom letting her child eat peanut butter and jelly. Were you part of her day, do you know what kind of activities may have been going on. Hoe is eating a sandwich at target any different then eating something at a fair, ball park, concert - short answer its not. Fine something constructive to spend your energy on. This conversation is stupid. [ Reply | More ]

I actually just created an account to stand with this mom. After hearing about all the backlash this poor mom who fed her child a pb sandwich is receiving I couldn't stay away and quiet. I would happily stand between this woman and every one of you giving her such a horrible time. Each and every one of you would be better off focusing on your own damn faults instead of trying to create one in this woman. And to the mother I would like to say, there is absolutely nothing I would want you to feel bad about...these people giving you such grief have clearly shown themselves to be individuals unworthy of respect or consideration. You are a caring and thoughtful mother to be spending time with her child and considerate to have thought about your child and pack a snack. While many a parent aren't even in their children's lives, or would dump them on a babysitter to go run errands, you are involved enough to have yours with you. You were not the parent to busy to pack some food, nor the one who told the child to "wait for dinner" or "you can wait" or "you'll be fine"... The fact that our society has become so spoon fed and egocentric that a situation like yours could attract so much anger and hostility is absolutely tragic and heartbreaking. I truly hope you receive an equal amount of support and are able to shake free these parasites who have tried to put you down. I wish you peace of mind and heart. [ Reply | More ]

No, it is not unacceptable to eat peanut butter in public. You are not responsible for other people's allergies. It is time people start taking personal responsibility. If you or your child has an allergy, you should carry wipes to wipe down a surface and an Epipen. I find it more acceptable for preschools and early elementary programs to ban peanut products or any other potentially harmful food (if there is a child in class with a specific allergy) because teachers can't see everything going on and young children put everything they see in their mouth. But in public, you are responsible for your own child. If this woman would have stopped me, I would have told her to mind her own business and moved along. [ Reply | More ]

not unacceptable. this whole thread is crazy. our country is really headed in the wrong direction, obviously. people think they can police when where and what a mother can feed her child? but we can't control GUNS which are used to kill our children at school? get a life people. focus on what's important. if you have a kid with an allergy, wipe down the cart or table or any other public surface. to expect everyone else in the world to stop eating peanuts/nuts publicly is outrageous. here's an idea... why don't you rally against major league baseball to remove peanuts from baseball games! do something constructive with your anger. see how that goes! good luck! Left over blowout/leaking diapers, phlegm/mucus/snot, spilt or leaked formula/milk/juice/Starbucks from bottles and cups, just plain dirty unbathed kids or the bloody leakage from a package of raw meat stores sell are just a few reasons I wipe down a cart before using it. We all know that young kids touch everything as they learn and explore their surroundings to then put those their fingers in their mouths and put anything in thing in their mouths. I, as most adults would clean up after my little guy who is now 9 years of age and who now does this on his own in public places, like a restaurant table after eating a meal. My son has food and seasonal allergies that we deal with daily by taking our own responsibility of along with his recent diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes 11 mths ago. My skinny as a bean pole young son’s pancreas stopped functioning, does not produce insulin. When his blood sugar goes low, he has to eat no matter where he is, WHETHER IT IS CONVENIENT FOR OTHERS or me, so I carry small snacks with me at all times and in the Diabetic World, peanut butter is a top snack for the necessary carbohydrates and protein. Try wiping down the arm rests and cup holders at the movie theaters before sitting; now that is disgusting. COMMON SENSE and COMMON COURTESY go a long way for you, your loved ones, and total strangers. I have other family members with peanut and CORN allergies. No popcorn for my niece. [ Reply | More ]

Fucking get over it people. What the fuck is wrong with a parent feeding their child? OMG it's in a fucking shopping cart. BIG DEAL. There are MANY places where you can get food and shop at the same time while using a shopping cart. And allergies? Not like the child that is eating it will throw it at someone. I see a great parent taking care of their child. And BTW if their child had an allergy they of course wouldn't be feeding them the peanut butter. [ Reply | More ]

How about wiping the damn cart with Clorox wipes before placing your child in it? Seriously? How about the hundreds of children that piss in the cart or rub their nasty boogers all over the handle or smudge feces inside the cart? That bacteria is residing in the cart and then any child can wipe it with their hands and then put their hands in their mouth and.. BAM! my kid has E-coli or stomach virus! So parents, please, wipe the cart before your little allergic child goes in it, and bring your damn epi-pen in case your child actually has to go in public for once with the rest of society! For goodness sake give this woman a break. At least she is feeding her kid something healthy and not stopping at McDonald's which is causing Americas kids to have obesity! GOOD JOB on actually making your child lunch before you went out in public, I bet half these parents don't even do that! Dollar Mc Nuggets it is kids! YES, feed your child a healthy PB&J and parents with kids who have allergies, get over it and WIPE the damn cart! P.S my kid is allergic to dairy, so please make sure she doesn't wash that down with a cup of milk. hahaha! Give me a break already... [ Reply | More ]

Hey! I've noticed the mom troll brigade roll out for this so I just wanted to let you know that there is nothing wrong with giving your kid a pb&j. I'm sure a prepared parent with a kid that has allergies has wipes. That's their job. To take care of their kid. You take care of your kid which includes feeding them. What is more concerning is the lack of respect and the rudeness over a peanut butter. You shouldn't concern yourself with people that get upset with peanut butter. Other alternatives that are understandable to be upset about.... The big masses of plastic in our ocean The current mass extinction we are living through Our prison system as a mask for legal human slavery I just wanted to assure you that the lady you dealt with is rude mommy troll and your best response would have been to tell her to mind her own business. People are so rude, I can’t even handle it. Moms should be allowed to feed their kids WHATEVER, WHENEVER and WHEREVER they need or want to without being attacked. If some people are so paranoid about peanuts, feed pb to your baby as an infant and reduce the chances of allergies. Do your research! And parents of kids who do have an allergy to any kind of food, either put your kids in a bubble OR worry about your own child and wipe things down. People are allergic to all kinds of things, not just peanuts. [ Reply | More ]
