My family is UMC, but we are educated. I'm directly related to two Harvard professors and a Dean. My father went to Trinity, Andover, Harvard, and then Yale for graduate school. My mother went to Abbot and Yale. I was the third generation to attend Harvard and my brother was the forth generation to attend Andover (I went to Deerfield). [ Reply | More ]

I thought UBers were primarily supposed to be smart. Western girl with multiple Ivy degrees here, and no interest in 95% of the pedigreed WASPs I've met. They're boring. No real intellectual interests--an no art history doesn't count. Education was wasted on them. [ Reply | More ]

English and titled mom here. Hilarious to me that Americans think they are upper class because their family members attended a school for two generations prior to them. They ignore the fact that they were peasant immigrants. Our land and titles go back 800 or more years. I sent a link for this thread to friends back in London and we've been laughing all night. LOL. This whole thread is totally ridiculous, including you and your "title." Since we don't have titles in the U.S. (that's part of why we wanted to break away from you people), the only way to classify people as upper class is through relatively recent family history, or plain old wealth. Incidentally, it's hilarious that you are English and "titled" and you're still wasting your life away here on UB with the peasant American commoners. Pathetic! [ Reply | More ]

Please. You had to know this mockery was coming from across the pond and it is a little deserved. America doesn't do snobbery well -- to our credit. Here's my pedigree: my dad grew up so dirt poor in the depression that his illiterate mom had to prostitute herself (in their one room apartment). His dad was a very low level Jewish gangster who was out of the picture early. But my dad was smart, driven and very hard working. He pulled himself up by his bootstraps and became a well known academic in his field. He raised a family in a nice, safe place and sent us to university. I'm in awe of my ancestors. In America, where you started from and where you ended up is your pedigree. At least that's the America I know. As for English mom, ehh, the British stood alone against Hitler. If her rarified titled ancestors weren't one of the English aristocrats that supported the Nazis. If not, I can admire and salute them for the character and breeding they showed during the war. The titles, different culture, different values. let's just say I can't relate and leave it at that. [ Reply | More ]

+2 and the OR is seriously out of touch if she doesn't know that this narrative - e.g., your ancestry does not determine your 'station' in life -- is the very narrative of America, the most successful country on the planet, and that the narrative infects all films and TV exported around the world. It looks crass and silly to hold on to any belief that titled heritage is important (signed a mom with titled heritage) [ Reply | More ]

I posted below about the Hapsburgs. Titles were abolished in 1918. If they had not been, you'd be addressing me as Countess/Grafin. As an American, I'm very happy they are obsolete. America is the greatest country in the world. The Brits are fun but it sucks to be one. [ Reply | More ]

We have different ideals in America, being one of the peasants (and that isn't entirely historically accurate, many titled and merchant class people came to the new world) that had the guts and will to survive the perilous journey to America is very honorable. [ Reply | More ]

Not wealthy (artist) but educated at TT schools and have been to more than 100 countries. Two direct lines of royalty in our lineage, Hapsburgs and British. My family has been in this country for 400 years and I grew up thinking everyone had streets in MA named after them. I am friends with several famous folks and have childhood photos of myself with heads of state. I speak several languages. But there is not one person in NYC who knows all of these things about me. Most people know one, perhaps two. I am seriously understated. [ Reply | More ]

One branch of my family came to the US as part of the anabaptist movement in the mid 1700's and farmed up until two generations ago on small, family owned farms. The type of hard working salt of the earth people that believed in raising a family, being kind to others, and would generally be snubbed by striving UBers. Their descendants include a few families still farming, tradesmen, and are otherwise largely in mechanically inclined employment. One branch of my family came to avoid conscription in the Franco-Prussian wars. They owned their own business weaving rugs from the living room of their house, which at the time was considered a highly skilled trade. Their descendants continue to mostly work hard in the trades and would probably be looked down on by most UBers. One line came from Cornwall to work in the mining industry and married into my French line, also mostly employed in the mining industry. I attended a Midwestern Big 10 University and went to grad school at Wash U. My children attend a school that UBers claim admits only "connected" aristocrats who make large donations get into. We are neither and we are not even wealthy by UB standards although we certainly are by any other definition if you look at the entire world. I do like to think that we are decent human beings which to me is much more important than any "pedigree" ever would be. [ Reply | More ]

Being rich and educated does not mean that one has a pedigree. My father was a murderer - never met him - and my mother died when I was an infant. My grandfather was a war criminal and horribly abusive towards all of his children. I grew up in poverty and was raised by my mentally ill aunt. I am educated - PhD in the sciences and a law degree both from "TT" schools and our HHI is close to $1MM. [ Reply | More ]

Came across this from a Gawker article...Lol...none of you seem to be 'pedigreed' — which I assume means part of the old guard — at all TBH. colleges have nearly nothing to do with it. start naming what clubs you belong to and then we can talk (trump-owned clubs don't count Maralagoers). also, the NOKD thing is a dead giveaway that you're not old US—had to look it up and it's pretty much the tackiest thing I've ever heard of, next to the whole PLU jazz. never discuss money and never discuss 'pedigree,' ugly as hell. also, no jews.
