I guess I'm not a typical 23. I had to grow up very fast, my father was abusive and I'm a pessimist, don't trust easily and always the 'sensible' one. I've had 3 boyfriends before my dh. The first was my 'high school sweetheart' the other 2 were nothing of the sort. I'm typically a cynic but when I met my dh I knew he was a guy I could marry and that was scary. Every time I tried to be 'sensible' about our relationship I made myself unhappy and hurt him in the process. I'm going with what makes me happy and he hasn't let me down yet. Maybe he won't, putting myself out there for love, even if it ends in hurt. :)

No - the commute from suburbs would add stress, would require a car, and we'd see dc less. We're doing fine and have all we need. We don't eat out or order in. I cook everything from scratch (we're even able to buy antibiotics free meat and dirty dozen organic produce). No vacations except weekend trip by train once a year and a few day trips. We don't go out except on my birthday. No expensive clothes. Stopping at one dc. Were lucky to get into a great unzoned public school. We are happy. We do what we love. Of course, we are working on ways to grow our income because we would love to live in a safer neighborhood and be able to save for college.

True, but you fail to understand that median income has nothing to do with quality of life. Most of those 50% in Manhattan whose income is under $60K live in poverty and in unsafe neighborhoods; many of them get reduced housing. The fact that someone make more than the median income does not mean they are rich.
