Interesting Atlantic article that, in part, talks about the Meaning of Marriage book. "Both men and women today see marriage not as a way of creating character and community but as a way to reach personal life goals. They are looking for a marriage partner who will "fulfill their emotional, sexual, and spiritual desires." And that creates an extreme idealism that in turn leads to a deep pessimism that you will ever find the right person to marry." Thoughts?

I think most UBers aren't of the capacity to appreciate or discuss an Atlantic article. Especially w/ the new crowd.

The article was silly and insubstantial. The study cited actually disproves the author's point. Married people ARE happier in the long run than single people.

agree, really stating the obvious and making no persuasive argument why marriage is actually better than cohabitation

Happiness wise, cohabitation is just as good as marriage.

OR: I didn't read the article - just stating my opinion. Yes - the new annoying crowd - YBM cast-offs or just a few bored people constantly posting. Super annoying.

Just going by the OP and not the article, this is partly true for me, 34 unmarried female. I'm looking for someone to share life with, which will likely mean a development of my character and a fostering of community of some form. I do expect my partner to fulfill my emotional and sexual needs but I'm also looking forward to getting to know and accepting him as he is and who he'll become.

I liked the piece and generally agree with it. DH and I just spent the whole night talking and joking like a sleepover party, but the real satisfaction comes from the compromises, the tough stuff we get through together. I love Tim Keller. Probably need to read that marriage book...
