Please tell me that most of the parents here on UB would travel with their kids to college visits and not send them there by themselves. That was a crazy troll, right?

Dh and I went on most college visits. He took her to a few on their own. It was a pain but at the same time sort of fun.

I didn't read it. My parents went with me on all my tours. 1992.

I missed this part of life. I went to undergrad and 2 grad schools blind. I have never gone on a college visit.

Would you have wanted your parents to go with you? Or do you feel like it was better spent by yourself?

Hell, no! I was a very independent child (and adult). It never ceases to amaze me at how involved parents are in their children's business. UB has opened my eyes.

Neither did I. I hated school. I only did undergrad.

My dad only went with me on 1 college visit. I was invited for a lot of scholarship interview weekends, so I just went by myself.

Were your colleges far away? How did you get there?

I flew all over the place, both coasts & midwest. Half of the schools covered travel; half didn't.

My sister took me on most of mine. It was like a fun girls road trip. My parents would have done it if my sister hadn't volunteered, but I'm glad she did.

It's common now for admitted seniors to go to an "admit weekend" without the need for parents to chaperone.

OP - here's the thing - with those of you who went on college visits on your own, did you wish your parents or at least one parent had been there with you? Do you resent them not having been there with you? Or do you think they would have been interfering with you? For those of you who didn't have parents go with you on your college visits, should I go with my ds or should I not go and let him go on his own? PS my involvement only includes transportation ... if he goes off with students designated to take him, I'm off the map and back into the hotel.

So glad my parents didn't go with me! Had really fun college experiences without them, met cool people. Those visits are super busy.

No, I mean literally just transportation and tours and then retreating back to the hotel if there's an overnight or something. I would never do that to my kid. I mean just official business, then disappear.

Eh. You're going to be sending your kid away to college. It should be their decision where to go, and they should be able to handle a simple college visit by themselves.

I'm the OP of the thread that appeared on. Whether I was working or not, I'd want to go. He's 17, you're probably 47 give or take - so you will see things and raise concerns he just won't. Plus, if you're footing the bill, you have every right to see what it is you're paying for!

I didn't read that post - but of course I'll take my kids on college visits... however I'll drop them off at school and let them be. I'll be there for them if they need me and not involved if they don't.

What do you do on a college visit? Walk around the campus and building exteriors, while you hear some canned bit? Talk with 3 kids and tell yourself that you are really getting a feel for the place? Honestly, I don't really see the point. I'd go to some for fun and to be supportive. But I doubt that DC'll need me there. Don't know if he'll want me there. And if he's too lazy to study the thing online first, then I'm not going or paying. BTW, I expect to pay for the schooling.

We've taken a number of college visits with DD, who is in 11th grade. It's sort of like a fun road trip, stay in a hotel, eat unhealthy food, etc.

I responded earlier and totally agreed. Even dd would admit it was fun, in an odd way.

Oh, DD enjoyed it. Unless the school had some sort of supervised "weekend at college"-type event, I can't really imagine sending her by herself.
