My DD had a page of 20 of these, she had no clue how to do them. That's why I am curious what age/grade child typically would be expected to do these. TIA!

Thats more disconcerting than what grade, that indicates that either teacher is not covering in class, or child does not understand. You need to talk with teacher.

This is because they are jumping from some EDM crap to trying to align to core standards which EDM didn't prep them for

What do you mean? This is the way it seems to me. I feel like these problems appeared out of thin air and my DD seemed to feel that way as well. She is very diligent and a devoted student, math doesn't come super-easy to her. This felt like a curve ball.

np: Those look like the new 3rd grade testing examples, or maybe 4th. My 3rd grader hasn't learned this either. I really wonder how badly his class is going to do on the tests.

Just a guess--4th grade? 5th grade? It's solving for x which is basic algebra (usually 5th or 6th grade), but these are so straightforward, any kid who could do simple multiplication should be able to tackle this.

OK, that makes me feel a bit better. She's in 3rd grade. She just learned multiplication and they are starting division. She's OK with her facts and could solve 3 factors to find the product but I could not for the life of me explain these to her without using division?

Does she know her times tables? Q:what time 7 is 63? Ans: 9. Next Q: OK, so the figure in the parenthesis is equal to 9. So, what times 3 is nine?

Actually no. You're supposed to use the Associative Property and multiply 3 x 7 first and then say: "21 times what number equals 63"?

The Associative Property just means it doesn't matter what order you x the numbers it will always be the same answer.

Did she know what the Associative Property was? If so, this should have been dead simple for her. If that hasn't been taught, that's kind of unfair. I'd double check in a non-confrontational way with the teacher that she covered this.

I think you make it a two step problem. The first time ask her to solve (__) x 7 = 63. In the third grade she would know that the answer is 9. The second step is to solve the parentheses so 3 x (___) = 9. So she would know the answer is 3. There should be no division, just two multiplication problems, solved one at a time.

But that isn't a multiplication problem. You're not solving 7 x (4 x 3) = ___. You're solving 63 ÷ 7 = __ and then you're solving 9 ÷ 3 = ___. It's technically 2 division problems.

It must depend how you think of it then. If you've memorized 9 x 7 = 63, I would think you could look at ___ x 7 = 63 and think "9", at least that's how it works in my mind.

Maybe you can draw out a table with 7 x 9 = 63, 8 x 9 = 72, etc and she can consult the table to do the problems until she no longer needs it.

It was more the backwards/division part which was throwing her. It makes me think she doesn't truly understand the concept of multiplication? Hopefully learning division will help reinforce it? She CAN solve for the product of 3 factors, like she can solve (3 x 3) x 7 = ___ with no trouble.

np: It can be solved either way. In nyc publics, at least the ones that use TERC, they are taught to guess the multiplier rather than use division. It is similar to the way they turn every subtraction problem into an addition problem.

Related Question.. what's with the backwards problems? My DD had this problem last night: 10 = __ ÷ 10 She insisted that the answer was 1 because she kept reading it right to left. I "think" they intended for her to solve it as __ ÷ 10 = 10?

I think there is a big push in early grade for pre-algebra skills -- i.e., = means equivalence, not "the answer is." FWIW, I think my DD needs some work on that as well.

OP here, thanks all. The issue with these problems was that we were "butting heads" over them. She asked for some help with her math homework but when I tried to point out that these were done incorrectly, she started the age-old kid argument "that's not the way Ms X taught us!" So I had her keep the wrong answers and hopefully Ms X will review them with her.
