I'm doing my holiday tips today (I know I'm late) and am trying to figure out amounts. Our building is big, not fancy. Has about 15 full-time employees, including desk clerks, doormen, maintenance guys, staff painter, etc. Any idea of how much I should give?

OP -- Forgot to say that we're not wealthy, nor are most of the people here. Solid middle class, I'd say.

So I take it you don't live in a rental? Maybe that means you're not an expert on tipping and you should find somewhere else to post? (np)

No, I live in a huge rental and there is not a dedicated "staff painter." It just sounded funny to me. I tipped everyone nicely.

OP -- Exactly. Not fancy, but there's always something to take care of someplace. It's an old building with lots of leaks, for instance, because of the old pipes. Most of what the painter does is fixing the plaster and paint after a leak, or the tiles.

Are you the obnoxious person who's invading every discussion on UB today? Our combined household income is considerably less than $100K and I don't feel poor.

Good, because you're not. And if you're going ot choose to live in a building with FIFTEEN staff members and reap the benefits, tip them (on time, hopefully)

I know, I feel terrible about being late. We had to go out of town to deal with my husband's mom, who isn't well. I'm writing a note of apology with the tips when I distribute them later today.

Do you have any idea how much staff is needed even in a larger building in the projects? You have no idea what you're talking about. 15 staff in a large building does not necessarily mean 'luxe'. Signed, mom with <$100K HHI in a large building with 18 staff.

If you have doormen, you're not in the projects.

No need to LOL. It's just a really big building. Definitely middle class, with some tenants a little wealthier and some probably lower middle class, but who've been here for a long time.

OP: Then we're below middle class by that definition, but see ourselves as solidly middle class anyway, compared to most people out there less fortunate.

$100 to each doorman. $75 to maintenance or anyone who helps fix stuff for you. $50 to porters.

And there is no relation between how much your rent is and how much the staff should be tipped. There is a relation between how much money you can spend on tips and how much the staff deserves the money.

The posters above who are stuck on the 15 staff members clearly aren't familiar with apartment living. In huge old buildings, that's what it takes to get the job done. I live in a similar building - believe me it is not luxury! We gave the super $100, door people $60, handymen $40, porters $30, and temps $20

We never give the super or anyone up the ladder any money. Only the folks at the bottom (doormen, porters, and handymen) get money from us.

I don't get it, you are not obligated to tip every single person working in your building, this is what your maintenance fees go towards, to pay these people. As far as tipping is concerned, maintenance guys, you pay them when they do the service, if they come to your apartment to fix something. Doormen, I don't know, don't live in a doorman building, but understand this is customary, because it's not per service call, like with maintenance guys. Clerks? I have no idea why you need to pay them, again, you have condo fees that should go towards paying their salaries, they are not necessarily service personnel you deal with on everyday basis, like doorman, or frequent basis, like maintenance. I believe in tipping for service, just because a building employs x-number of people to run it, doesn't mean I must tip them all, I already pay the fees to pay them and if they come to do the service, I tip them then.
