This is just a silly argument. People can define "rich" however they want. However, can you live on $450K anywhere in the US and have everything you need, plus pretty much everything you want at a standard that's, like, 2x better than what the average person has? Yes. If you want to be someone with 5 or 10x better than what the average person has, sorry, I hope they tax the living daylights out of you. [ Reply | More ]

+1 and I'm in the $450+ camp. I'd actually go the other way and say that people making $45 are likely working 40hrs of sometimes hard manual labor. $450 is likely 60hrs of sometimes mentally challenging work. The marginal return on effort by $450 v $45 earner is so outrageous that there really is no comparison. [ Reply | More ]

Not utterly ridiculous. Individuals from all walks of life make decisions that shape their futures. I came from a broken family that was very poor and chose to work hard and make good decisions to rise above that life. I went to an ivy league school and worked my ass off to for the best future possible. While other partied and made poor choices I made many personal sacrifices, and now i am making much much more money than anyone I know. 450K is not a lot in NYC, and for those of us working in finance leaving the city isn't an option. I would never say that 450K is hardly getting by and would say, this is a quite nice and comfortable lifestyle, but it definitely is not a millionaire lifestyle. As far as getting deprived, depends on a person, some people do feel this way, while plenty don't. Some people feel disgruntled with incomes north of 1 mil, while others are happy on 300K a year. But the fact is, those earning 450K are not rich and would not afford millionaire lifestyles, whether they resent this fact or not, is not the point here. They could be happy, but this doesn't make them rich financially. [ Reply | More ]

People who make 450K often cannot choose to live anywhere they want, because such salaries are not available in low COL places in the first place, in their vast majority such high earners are concentrated in areas of high COL, like NYC, Bay Area, DC metro, Boston, etc. That is what makes these places so expensive in the first place. 450K can get you a nice lifestyle in Manhattan, given that your rent is no more than 6K, and you send your kids to a public school. You can have a full time nanny, a weekly housekeeper, nice vacations, nice savings and even afford a garage for your car. So, not a bad life, it is a solidly UMC lifestyle even in Manhattan. Rich has many layers and the sky is the limit, but honestly, 450K is not rich. Rich lifestyle means you don't work for a living, you have your money work for you, plus, in Manhattan rich are those who own nice large apartments or townhomes, have full time maids, nannies and even drivers, have at least one but fairly lavish vacation home (not a cabin in the woods, or a beachfront condo), vacation at expensive resorts and fly first class, kids go to private schools, etc. [ Reply | More ]

I make 250K per year, my husband is at about 500K. After federal and state taxes, my income will be about cut in half. Of that 120K, we pay 45K to a nanny, which leaves us with 80K net. I will probably quit after receiving my bonus for 2012 because to be quite honest, that money is not worth my time. We will be firing our nanny (who is the sole provider for her family), and as a formerly productive member of society dropping out of the workforce. This is why increased tax rates don't equate with increased tax revenues. The government just lost about 120K from my family and another family that we supported will be unemployed. No i'm not expecting sympathy at all. I'm simply describing my situation and explaining that there is a ripple effect in the economy because of people like me. You can tax high earners but everyone will end up feeling the negative effect. [ Reply | More ]

The high earning positions aren't going anywhere. As long as there are bodies to fill the roles (and there are!) then it doesn't really make a difference whether you personally stay or go. Your ripple effect theory has way too many holes. [ Reply | More ]

Um, actually your company will just replace you so the government isn't going to lose any money on you at all. And your replacement will probably have a nanny to pay for as well. Although you sound really whiny so I have a hunch that you are going to be one of those SAHMs who still has a nanny. [ Reply | More ]

Hey, I'll take her job! I would sure as hell love to make 250K a year and would find it very much worth it even with the nanny cost. 80K a year savings after taxes and nanny's salary, that would be niiiiice :) [ Reply | More ]

You don't sound smart enough to make $250K. First off, half of 250 is 125, not 120. Second, to keep it in perspective, why wouldn't you subtract nanny's salary from husband's pay of $500K? You are taking home $125K. If that is not enough for you to justify getting out of bed in the morning, then that's your issue. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks for the math lesson! Ivy league degree here and if you read my post i wrote "about cut in half"-I'm using rough numbers not exact. And the reason i wouldn't take the nanny's salary out of my husband's is because the trade off is ME working, not him. He will work either way. YOU are the one that sounds not so smart. LOL, I bet I'm at least 10 years younger and a hell of a lot hotter than you as well. [ Reply | More ]

np: I agree with women above...had salary of $200k and left workforce. Not worth time/effort and other costs after taxes, plus I traveled and missed out on much the kids did. [ Reply | More ]

Well, if you quit, your employer will hire someone else in your place, pay salary that it paid to you before, and hopefully, that person will be able to hire your nanny. Or your nanny will find a job working for another family. It will work out. You will, however, remain an ungrateful entitled rich brat. [ Reply | More ]

FYI in general when you get to the 250K + income range--the positions aren't so easy to fill. That is why they make 250K in the first place. Supply and demand. There is a reason you make much less. [ Reply | More ]

Your DH is making 500K, more than enough for two of you. Believe me there are tons of women out there who go to work for a lot less and still pay for a nanny the same amount as you are paying and who don't have DHs who earn this much. These people will also be hit with tax increases and it will hit them a lot harder and these women don't have options of quitting their jobs. [ Reply | More ]

i realized that. so many nannies will be losing their jobs because the obama tax increases to those in the $200-$300 range (esp couples) are going to make it so that it won't make sense to hire a nanny. the carribean better watch out! looks like they'll have a wave of ex=pats coming home! Oh come on. First of all, these are marginal tax rates so I doubt you pay half in taxes. We make a little over 1 mm a year and have no real deductions. You know what our current tax rate is - adding federal, state and local, social secuity, etc. 41 percent! Second, 80k is a lot of money - it pays two private school tuitions, or lets you save for college/ retirement. You make 750k a year or 375k after taxes (as you claim) and claim 80k doesn't matter? It is more than 1/4 of your take home. [ Reply | More ]

Okay Ms. Laffer, I am not happy about tax increases either, but this line of reasoning is flawed. Assuming there is a less-employed or unemployed person to do your job, they may get your salary and spend that money on nannies, food, etc etc. Second, don't forget that if no one is hired to do your job, your company's pre-tax earnings go up, increasing taxable revenue [ Reply | More ]

The tax brackets make no sense, because they set the highest boundary too low, thereby ignoring the truly rich and punishing those who actually work for a living and are essentially just better compensated working class, salarymen and small business owners, those, who in their vast majority will never break that glass ceiling to true riches and having their money not their life-hours work for them. The problem is not that the UMCs are not paying enough, it's because the billionaires and those earning millions a year don't pay enough. Get extra 5% from super rich on their capital gains and you'll be set. [ Reply | More ]

Look at these charts. The 200k the 500k actually benefit from the deal more than anybody else. http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/01/these-2-tax-charts-tell-you-exactly-who-won-the-fiscal-cliff-deal/266744/ [ Reply | More ]

I'd like to see both increases and cuts, 1 for 1. We can then close the deficit twice as fast. Both parties would have to give "equally" - you want 100 in new revenue, you need to show 100 in cuts, resulting in 200 off the deficit! I'd like us shift away from income tax and more to VAT or consumption taxes, especially on products with large negative externalities (guns, etc). [ Reply | More ]

doesn't matter, those making $200-$250 will also be facing massive tax increases and cuts to deductions, so everyone living in this fantasy that "the rich" are somebody else. get ready. you voted for obama. good luck to you. they will all be whining by the end of the year and trying to blame the republicans for their mess. the only thing worse than an idiot, is a self-serving idiot who can't take responsibility for his choices.
