I am affiliated with a large university. Every time a crime happens on/near my campus (if the victim is a university affiliate), the campus security department sends an email to all affiliates with a description of the crime and a description/photo of the perpetrator(s). I have been affiliated with this university for over a decade and have received several such emails a month. In every single instance, the perpetrator(s) are young black males. My question: How do I avoid fearing/stereotyping young black males when I am out on the street? Most of these perpetrators have not been caught. Some of the crimes are quite violent. I work at Columbia and we get these emails all the time. How do I avoid stereotyping? How to avoid stereoptypes? I went to a large university where the vast majority of students where white, and young white males were the primary perpetrators, and a lot of the crimes were very violent (mostly sexual assault against women, but also muggings) - the key being young males were the perpetrators. hmmmm so is this university plopped in the middle of an urban area where the residents are poor and this university is an isolated fort (Fordham in the Bronx or Columbia come to mind)? Not sure what to tell you - but muggings are usually done for 2 reasons (pure robbery so they can steal whatever you have to sell to make money because they can't make money other ways like a normal job OR gang-related where they are proving to the gang they are tough etc) I guess just be on your A game and realize you are in the hood and that you are a target! I have no idea if this is bored Racist Mom posting, but is there really no way to discuss this without resorting to the tired "you're a racist" stuff? I live in an urban, "mixed" neighborhood and this stuff rankles me no end. We have a fairly high rate of violent crime here and to generalize, I'd say it falls into black or Hispanic gang-related violence that doesn't cross a lot of racial boundaries, some drug-related white guys, usually older heroin users but also younger Oxy types, and then a whole bunch of muggings and random street attacks that are almost all black or Hispanic young men attacking white people. I don't have numbers but if you we an alien landing in my neighborhood from Mars, that's what you'd observe. Lots of old-fashioned muggings recently. And so yes--I avoid gangs of kids of any color but more black or Hispanic guys in hoodies (yeah, sorry--hoodies are scary. If you want to stay warm, try a hat). If a man of color is walking home carrying a backpack or a bag of groceries, I assume that he's a safe bet. If the young white guy is wearing the hoodie and just ambling along, I avoid. Am I racist? There is not a black youth crime problem. The thousands of young black men being frisked daily does not mean they are criminals - they are victims of racist policy. The fact that jails are overrun with black people are signs of racial social control and recidivism rates due to dehumanizing criminal policy. I too noticed that in nearly all, if not every single notification, the perp description included terms like "African-American," "dark-complected," or "black," depending on the witness descriptions, I suppose. It's worth noting that crimes committed by students were not similarly reported and were typically investigated and "handled" internally, as you no doubt know if you worked in administration. Another poster mentioned this, as well, but it's worth repeating. For me, I didn't feel any more wariness of young Af/Am men than I would have of ANY young men when I was on my own. I was vigilant and aware. While I don't think that my sense of race relations was affected by these e-mails, I wonder how the near-constant barrage affected students, in particular, contributing to an "us and them" mentality. We often discussed if there was a way to mediate the impact of the e-mails, but the information was what it was. IMHO, the best thing the university can do (in addition to better security and heightened security training for students, of course) is to foster communication between the neighborhood and the academy, particularly when there is such a stark divide ethnically. to the original poster, your experience at the university is somewhat unusual... in the usa the pattern is that non whites commit crime at about three times the rate that whites commit crime. If you were posting from Norway, your story would be more plausible. In Oslo, for example, more than 90% of the rapes committed in the past five years have been committed by non whites, even though non whites are a fraction of the population. [ Reply | More
