12 weeks post-partum, breast-feeding, and just started exercising again. Seem to be having milk supply issues. Could that be related to the exercise or coincidence? Suggestions for how to increase/maintain supply? (Is it better to pump more frequently or for longer amounts of time? In between feedings or at the end of each feeding? Is there a method here or is it hit or miss?)

If you're getting dehydrated or you're not eating enough, then it could be related. In general, though, exercise is fine when you're breastfeeding.

Oh, I'm eating plenty (more than plenty!). May not be drinking enough water, though - try to be good, but will try harder.

At 12 weeks your supply stops being hormone based and becomes 'need' based (ie how often you pump or nurse). Pumping extra will help and if ur supply is still low try Domperidone

More frequent pumping is generally the best way to increase supply.

Thanks. So keep the duration the same but pump more often?

I had success increasing supply by pumping immediately after every feeding.

Thank you. I think I'm going to try this - adding pumping after every feeding, in addition to pumping to compensate for every time she gets a bottle. How long did it take to get your supply back up? (I have a toddler too, so the thought of all this pumping is kind of daunting!)

At around 12 weeks your body adjusts so that it makes the milk that you need. It's a good thing, you should no longer get as engorged or have uncomfortable / embarrassing letdowns any time you think of your baby. Your supply is probably fine, just in tune with your baby now!

I appreciate this, but I'm actually falling behind any time that she gets a bottle and I pump, and over the past few days she has clearly been hungry even after nursing and nursing and nursing. I'm hoping it's just a growth spurt, but even if that's the explanation, want to make sure that I keep up.

better to pump more frequently. also if you're pumping a lot and not breastfeeding that much, that could be a reasno for the dwindling supply. sadly, pumping doesn't get you as much milk as breastfeeding does. however, i'm not a breastfeeding nazi and think you should feel free to supplement with formula. jus telling you how it goes. if you're pumping a ton, consider renting a hospital grade pump. it's more efficient and does less damage to your breasts (esthetically).

Using a hospital grade pump - definitely more tolerable than a personal one. DB rarely gets more than 1 bottle / day, and often no bottles, so I don't think that's the cause. I'll be ok supplementing with formula if needed, but am worried about contributing further to the diminishing of my supply.

how do you know your supply is diminishing if you're mostly breastfeeding and not pumping? also, i think around 12 weeks is the time when your body starts to understand exactly how much it needs to produce and your breasts stop feeling so full and they also stop leaking as much. maybe this is what's happening? does baby seem satisfied with the amount of milk s/he is getting? if so, you're probably just anxious and you should try to leave it alone and not worry yourself!

DB seems hungry even after nursing both sides, and when I do pump, I'm getting less than I did before and less than she is taking when given a bottle...

there's no perfect answer here - i wish i could be more helpful. one thing i will say is that you sound amazingly well-adjusted for a mom to a 12 week old :-) i say go with the flow. if you get 20 oz/day, you supplement with 10-15 oz formula/day. my first was tongue tied and so i exclusively pumped with a shitty medela pump in style and i got 20 oz/day, so i supplemented with a lot of formula. i can tell you that whatever the supposed benefits to breastfeeding are (attachment and intelligence - and again i emphasize that this is supposedly the case because i don't necessarily beliebe this), i can tell you that my DD is craxy about me and a really nice, caring child and i can also tell you that she is doing very, very well academically (by any NYC standard). so, don't put pressure on yourself. a happy mommy really does help to facilitate a happy baby.

Thanks for this. I'm a second-time mom, which may explain being calmer about it all (though more frazzled overall as I deal with the toddler as well!), and I'm also rationally aware that the benefits of breastfeeding are (if at all) at the margin, though I have an emotion-driven desire to try to keep at it for at least 6months. Supplemented with DB1, who had a hard time latching at first, and will supplement this time too, if necessary - but trying to forestall if possible. Thanks again for your thoughtful response.

Don't lose sight of the fact that your emotion-driven desire can be 100% fulfilled regardless of whether you produce 20 or 30 oz/day! My second would nurse well beyond the point where he'd taken every ounce. The babies like to suck and be close to mom - you're totally succeeding!

I generally found that exercise would almost always lead to my milk coming down - like my boobs would be about to explode after a run.

Are you pumping to a second letdown? I found that helped my body increase supply. Hydration is super important too though.
