Dear UB -- whether you are a lawyer, a doctor, a real estate broker, a nanny, a cleaning lady, somebody who works in retail, a restauranteur, a taxi driver, a wealth manager, an employee of a non-profit, a teacher, a cop, or a firefighter... MY FAMILY IS THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU. Last year, we paid NEARLY ONE MILLION DOLLARS in NYC and NY State taxes. DH's fund could have been located in NJ like Appaloosa, or in Connecticut like SAC, but we are located in NYC. Nearly 100 people have jobs in NYC because of that decision. I'm not asking for a ticker tape parade, or even for gratitude. But the least you can do is stop blaming us for every financial shortfall with complaints that we are not "paying our fair share."

Then get to your crappy service job where you will be treated like human garbage and stand on your feet some more or do some other unpleasant work you probably have never done in your life. Then take the same disgusting crowded train back to your depressing apartment and cook and clean for your family for the rest of the evening, then crush into an oblivion of exhaustion, called "sleep", then 5 hours later, rinse and repeat. God forbid you have small kids needing attention, medical care, school help, or a newborn or an infant needing care around the clock.

Admittedly, you do not believe it is fair the working poor take more in services than they pay in taxes, at the same time finding a notion of switching place with them terrifying. I was trying to demonstrate to you why many people must rely on social services and why tax brackets are graduated to allow poorer wage earners to pay less tax or even no tax. These people are not lazy, they work, they do jobs that are NECESSARY, jobs without which this city will fall apart. But they don't get paid enough to make a living, to afford healthcare, daycare for kids, and housing in safe areas, they rely on certain assistance just to make ends meet, be it housing assistance, subsidized daycare, food stamps, etc. Why are these people in such circumstances? Not because they made wrong choices in life, not because they somehow screwed up and you somehow did well (and what did you do exactly, marry the rich guy?). It is because at that level if you are born in poverty, if you are not born with the high IQ and good looks to boot, your chances of advancement are extremely poor. But this is not all. Someone MUST be doing these jobs, we need these people who are doing these low paying jobs, but we don't pay them enough in relation to the cost of living here. So, this is why they pay less in taxes and are allowed to take more in services, that is why we pay more in taxes, because we earn more, adequate to survive on and in your case (if you are even for real) live a posh lifestyle with the leftover millions.

Former lawyer for big bank here. Wealthy people need to pay taxes for city and govt services. Without the stability government allows, we would not have a society that allow your husband to make that kind of profit. Example: the police (from your beat cop to highest ranks of FBI and CIA) and law enforcement such as state and federal prosecutors and judges and support people for the court system stand between you and anarchy. Taxes pay for a system which guard your property and your safety. Even if you have never been a victim of a crime, our justice system provided you with security because it kept the would-be criminals from robbing you just by the knowledge there are consequences to criminality. If you don't get how the richest people benefit the most from a stable and law abiding society because they have the most to lose, then try to imagine a society without the infrastructure taxes pay for...I think all the rich people (and middle class people too) will have to start hiring personal security detail.

Really. You don't walk on public streets (DOT), take public transportation (MTA), goto the parks (DEP), get protection from the police (NYPD), get protection from the Fire Department (NYPD)? Snow removal (DSNY)? hospitals (HHC)? trees (DEP)? public parking (DOT)? get water from the city (DEP)? sewage treatment (DEP)? take taxis (TLC)? go into buildings knowing they're sound (DOB), go into restaurants knowing they're clean (DOH)? protected from convicts (DOC), treated by EMTs (FDNY)?

Op is ignorant. She does not understand how a society works. A city like NYC is expensive to run, and she does not appreciate how much her whole family benefits. She will scream about taxes but ignore how she and dh has benefited. So ignorant and wrong. She benefits more from services of the city and government than anyone. From certification of plastic surgeons to policing her 5th ave streets, government is everywhere. She doesn't even appreciate it. But when all the services are not there anymore, no doubt op will be the first one to complain! Can't have it both ways. You want a well run society, it cost money.

+10000000. This is the point. OP is bitching how she is paying her fair share, but in reality she is paying exact same rate people earning 250K a year pay if not less. And there is a huuuuge gap between those making 250K and those making over 2 mil a year. I don't think she is paying fair share, her tax rate should be higher than people earning 250K a year. There should be another bracket somewhere around 1 mil HHI. Besides, it is known that the very rich get a lot of their earnings from capital gains, which are taxed at 15%, which is on part with how much poor demographics pay, this is just purely BS.

Trickle down effect nonsense is another lame excuse of the rich to keep more money in their pocket and pay less taxes! What matters more for economy is how the masses feel about their spending power, how secure the middle class thinks their jobs are and how much they can go out to spend. It's the numbers game, you get million dollars when one person pays it for your service or when 1000 people give you a dollar. Same thing. So far masses of lower wage workers outnumber you thousands to one if not more. Even if they spend overall less per household, in their numbers they spend a lot more overall. When the masses feel squeezed, that's when we all feel recession. Rich have already raked in major dough, they are going to spend anyway and they mainly spend on higher price goods and services. When retail stores got hit during the recession, the luxury retailers didn't report lower numbers, they were chugging along.

I just assumed that they had to be more sophisticated than that, that there would be a sheepishness, a gratefulness that while they were weak and motivated by greed, wasting their intelligence to make more money for people who didn't really need it, smarter, better people were curing diseases, developing ideas, trying to save the earth from global warming, and pushing the boundaries of our world in so many new ways. So much jealousy on this board, it is really quite sad. In 2009 the top 5% paid over 58% of taxes collected (top 1% paid 37%, top 10% paid 70%). I'd say that's "fair share" plus a lot more. Hard to deny.

There is a top .5% inside this top 5%, who pay capital gains taxes, way lower than people making a fraction of what they make every year. If they were to pay slightly more, they would still keep lots than any of us would ever dream to earn in our lifetimes, but the society at large would benefit a lot more. It is not about how much you pay, but how much you get to keep, and you still get to keep PLENTY! Warren Buffet is actually against tax relief for the wealthy and thinks that we could benefit from raising taxes a little on the very very wealthy, they will still invest, no worries about it, because, guess what? They still have BOAT LOADS of cash they have to do something with.

I want to see the distribution of how much different income groups within this top 5% contribute in taxes each year. I bet you those at the bottom of the 5% get screwed the most.

I agree to some extent. I've been a partner of 3 small finance businesses over the last 15 years, and the expense of running the business in NYC is so much more. We're located in NYC because that's where our clients prefer to meet us, not b/c I need to spa here. we've provided jobs for not only people hired in our firm, but also quite a few indirectly (domestic help, etc.).

And how do you think your domestic help/spa personnel/delivery guys/restaurant cooks and waiters can get by living in this area without your tax contributions? Do you think they can survive on the measly salaries you pay them alone, without the social programs, public transport, subsidized housing (they probably are living in), public schools? In order to support such a large cohort of population with measly wages, that are working to service the rich, the rich have to pay into the tax system that goes to support social programs these people need to supplement their wages, which are extremely crappy given the insanely high COL.

In either circumstance, you are forgetting that UB is a board full of working professionals who pay hundreds of thousands in taxes per year, and that for many of these dual-income executive households, paying a million in taxes is not unheard of for them. Your line about feeding the city is a bit ridiculous. This is a city of 8 million people and your million dollars is a drop in the bucket. Np- When Wall Street has a bad year, so does everyone in NY. Wall Street is the biggest taxpayer in NY by far. When they don't get big bonuses, they spend less on goods and services. The retail stores suffer, real estate suffers, restaurants suffer, etc. When businesses suffer, the people who own those businesses have less discretionary income and soon and so on. For those of you who vilify Wall Street, you should think about what would happen if it did go away. When more and more hedge funds move out of the city, those people are not going to our local restaurants, retails stores, doctors, etc. aside from losing their taxes.

DH is in IB and while I don't disagree that there's a trickle down effect, I would never think we're feeding someone else. I came to NYC during 2008 when it was panic in finance world. We took advantage of lower rates at hotels and lower rents, but honestly, they weren't that much lower. They were still pretty expensive and now they are back up to where they were. Finance industry is still reeling from the events in 2008 and lots of people are out of jobs, even those who used to make big bucks. But prices are back up, it is still a landlord's market. How to you explain this. here is how. Rich people have *already* accumulated lots of wealth, they are going to spend, what else are they going to do? They have no choice but to spend or invest. the world is becoming more and more "flat" and soon it wont' matter what country you take your cash in, because, guess what, there are tons of money overseas and they are looking for all the same things as you do - great investment opportunities and luxury goods. We have moved towards plutocracy and it is a global plutocracy. We are concentrating more and more wealth in hands of fewer and fewer people while the rest is getting poorer and poorer and this nasty little wealth pyramid is about to tip over if it keeps growing fatter at the top.

We AREN'T paying our fair share! We are paying less, as a proportion of our income tax, then has been paid for decades and decades! The only reason we pay so much in gross terms is because we HAVE so much relative to other people. The more we hoard money, the more tax burden we have to burden. Because there is less and less money out there that we don't possess! It doesn't seem like you are very familiar with income distributions in this country. I think if you are blessed, like we are, the least you can do is figure out the reality of what has been going on. Look up the gini coefficient. Money comes with responsibilities, and it doesn't seem like you are owning up to that.
