Any redeeming qualities about being in the Hamptons during peak summer? My MIL from Florida rented a house out there and wants us to spend a lot of time-which will be great for the kids who barely get to see her. Last I remember, Hamptons in summer was packed, took hours to get around by car, difficult to get reservations, etc. What can you do out there that isn't stressful in July/August? Can it be enjoyable? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Honestly I'd rather enjoy Central Park than go there. [ Reply | More ]

I will have to look for those. I have not been out there in so long. It's beautiful, but crowded. When I leave NYC, I prefer to be away from crowds. If I avoid the villages, especially on weekends, it might be okay. [ Reply | More ]

It's wonderful if you have a great house with pool, use Freshdirect to deliver everything you need, and stay at your home. If you want to gout for lunch/dinner then you better love the traffic! [ Reply | More ]

OP here, this is true. I didn't get many details about the house, will hope it has a pool for dc, and Fresh Direct is a great idea. Thanks. [ Reply | More ]

Just plan to be by the house-and like pp said-Fresh Direct. Especially if it has a pool it will be fabulous. I can't stand my MIL-but if she rented a house in the Hamptons and wanted us to come out I'd be there in a NY minute! [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I figure I'll stay put for awhile and drive back and forth in very off hours. Hate the traffic even more than the crowds. [ Reply | More ]

If you time your drive you will not hit traffic - ie go after 7pm or before 9am, use theHOV lane... Tons of quiet beaches, you prob have a pool and BBQ, kids will love the vegetable stands and farmers mrkets, Che k out the children's museum of the east end, stroll around the wharf in sag harbor, buy some corn from a stand, some fresh seafood , go for ice cream andMexican, see a play at Guid hall or bay St Theatre, visit art galleries all over, visit antiques hops, Parish Art Museum, see a polo match or horse show, goat on a boat puppet theatre, free librarystorytimes, fresh air, no smog... That's off the top of my head. Just skip the overpriced and overcrowded trendy restaurants at night and orderfreshdire t. [ Reply | More ]

What town? IT does make a difference. As far as getting out and back, if you don't go during peak times it is not horrible. I don't love it out there but I have family there so I have to make the trek.... [ Reply | More ]

These people are crazy. It's one of the most beautiful places on earth. The beaches are great, tons of kids and you can avoid the traffic by staying in your town, riding bikes, etc... if you don't go I'll take my dc's and go. [ Reply | More ]

You know what I mean. She is a new mom with newborns and has the opportunity to get out of NYC for free. I hardly think New Zealand or Bora Bora are Summer options for her. Can people on this board try, try, try to be civil and nice. [ Reply | More ]

the beaches in east hampton usually appear on the list of best beaches in the US: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/06/pictures/110603-best-beaches-2011-summer-travel-dr-beach/#/best-beaches-2011-main-beach_36207_600x450.jpg. Lots to hate out there, but one reason it stays popular is natural beauty. [ Reply | More ]
