What private schools would be good for a bright, fun boy who is really into math and building? I want him to be well-rounded, but I particularly want a school with a solid emphasis on math and science. This is for K applications in NYC. Thanks.

Assuming you are looking for well-rounded in the K-12 group, would also add Trinity, Riverdale and Fieldston.

Aren't there distinct entry points - K/MS-7&8/HS-9? Beyond those points, I understand it is impossible to get in during an off year - esp. if you are trying to move from one PS to another PS.

Don't consider Speyer if you are seeking solid emphasis on science. Barely a part of the curriculum at this point.

Which schools use Singapore math in the NYC? For publics, I know Anderson and Nest do. For privates, I only know of Speyer using it. Any others?

You might want to look at Grace. The school has good science facilities and teaching, and there's an after-school math club that is very challenging.

Grace uses a mix of approaches and publishers, described on website under program > academic department > math They use Prentice Hall for upper school.

You're right. I'm not saying he will be great at it. But he seems interested in it (has been adding and subtracting for months, and loves to play math games), so I thought it would be good to build on it.

np. I will never for the life of me understand this type of response. Your dc's mileage may vary, but I promise you, with some kids it really is obvious from an early age--even younger than 4. And I'm not necessarily talking about super-geniuses, either.

Agree. We left Trinity in LS because the teacher in first grade resented the math specialist coming in to work with my child who is advanced in math. the resentment vibe was a problem in the class. The specialist also did not give him enough to do during the math portion of the class and he was punished for fidgeting - we were told that they didn't want him working too far ahead of the class...ok but don't punish him because he gets bored and wanted to be doing something besides sitting for 20 minutes waiting. They didn't listen, or really care. then it became our problem and that's how they deal with things.

If you really care about Math and Science, then you should look at a private that uses Singapore Math. There are very few schools that do real science from Kindergarten, but there are a few. All will say there is some science, but if there is not a real curriculum and real time devoted to it, then it's not legitimate.

Why would I want to go to a school that consumes a packaged curriculum rather than has a dedicated team that designs their own? That's just like going to public.

You must not have looked at Sing Math Books. The point of Singaporean Math is that it is not a packaged curriculum. There is a question at the top of the page a completely blank page in the middle and one little line at the bottom where you are supposed to write your answer. SIngaporean Math is about the process. You can get to the answer in many ways and it is by sharing the different methods that your dc and dc's classmates use that allows for deeper understanding of math. There is no cemented mindset. There are absolute calculations like simple addition, sub, mult and div but it can be manipulated and massaged as necessary to find the answer. It is the foundation of advance math, science, economics, etc. You learn how to prove a theorem by learning how to prove against negative statements and positive statements.

Us too. Loved their math program layout - think it will be fantastic. Have a dd who is very strong in math and leaving a SS all girls school that was supposed to be strong in math but isn't - their math is all over the place. Very excited about the singapore and for my DC who is starting this year in K.

I'm not saying it's worksheets, i know it's not. It's process oriented, it can be cooperative, but it's also pre-packaged. It is therefore taught as a discreet subject in the elementary and youngest years, not in interdisciplinary and connectional ways. It's EXACTLY what I would expect from a for-profit school, or a bureaucracy.

Look at the Saint Ann's Math Department course offerings and curriculum statement (http://www.saintannsny.org/depart/math/mathmain.html). Saint Ann's has a lot of interesting math electives (Game Theory, Calculus on Algebraic Functions, etc).
