I think they found t-rex and pteradon bones close to each other, put them together wrong and got dragons. just becuase people didn't call them dinosaurs doesn't mean they hadn't stumbled onto some bones or fossils.

OP: I'm not high, I promise. These ideas just pop into my head. Anyway, a quick search indicated that dinosaur fossils were first "discovered" in the 1800s but dragons as depicted in art have been around since the 1200s or maybe even before. But I bet you're right. I just wondered if anyone definitively knew or had ever thought about this, too.
