The newest trend in NYC education is to get a group of like-minded parents together and hire several tutors for a small group of same-age kids. Technically it is homeschooling. However, the parents share the cost of the private tutors and thus it is far less expensive than traditional private school. Parents who do this aren't necessarily religious (like homeschooling in the midwest) although they can customize the curriculum any way they see fit. Thoughts? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I wonder if there are any companies that cull together all the resources? Math programs and workbooks, etc. so that the philosophy is seamless but the instructors are implementing it and not required to come up with it on their own. [ Reply | More ]

It's essentially a small, unregulated private school. No oversight, no criminal background checks on the tutors, no clear lines of communication or authority when problems develop. What happens when one of the parents decide that one of the tutors is no good? and the other parents don't agree? It's all good until something goes wrong and when it goes wrong, it goes wrong in a big, big way. [ Reply | More ]

np. Yep, totally true. I have a coworker who moved to NJ specifically because of its lax (nonexistent) homeschooling regulations, because he and his wife didn't want to deal with any bureaucratic oversight while they homeschooled their kids. [ Reply | More ]

May groups of parents provide home instruction collectively by engaging the services of a tutor to provide group instruction to their children? Parents providing home instruction to their children may arrange to have their children instructed in a group situation for particular subjects but not for a majority of the home instruction program. Where groups of parents organize to provide group instruction by a tutor for a majority of the instructional program, they are operating a nonpublic school and are no longer providing home instruction. Substantial equivalency of a nonpublic school program is not determined pursuant to Section 100.10 of the Regulations of the Commissioner. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, it's not homeschooling, technically. Technically, once you get a group of non-related families together and start paying teachers to educate your kids, you're operating a private school. You may fly under the radar for a good long while, but it's technically illegal, since you have no accreditation, insurance, or anything else required to operate a private school. [ Reply | More ]

I really wanted to do this when my child was in elementary school. I knew it was illegal and fraught, but it's such a good solution. My child was way ahead of his classmates, was bored, didn't fit in, etc. A small setting with bright kids eager to learn, and a really smart teacher would have made a huge difference. I don't really see why parents can't decide to take on whatever risks a private group tutoring situation has; if we are willing to sign waivers, etc why does the state have to be involved? MIL was a diplomat's DC. She and most others were sent to boarding schools in the country where their parents were stationed until 8th grade, then back to boarding school in their home country for high school. MIL was at her first boarding school at age 7, in India in the late 1940s, then to HS in the US, while her parents were in the Philippines. [ Reply | More ]
