I was considering moving to NYC but I came here for a visit this weekend & am quite overwhelmed. Do you get used to it?

honestly, you probably among toursists - they stop inexplicably, they look up while they walk, they walk slower and without purpose, mix that in with old people and natives just trying to go about their day and you can have a mess - it is easy enough to avoid when you are a local just walk one block off the beaten path and there is no problem.

of course and all of the shoving, crowds, etc are mostly in touristy areas...those aren't areas you'd be living in. I was born and raised here, my area is quiet. When I have to go to a touristy area like times sq, 34st, Rock. Center, etc. I am ready for the dodging of the crowds, etc but it's not every day here in the city

real nyers dont shove. really, mostly we line up, wait patiently and are coldly courteous. You would think you were amoung a sea of automatons, until you trip and fall and 6 people pick you up, ask you how you are and offer to help you home.

Native NY'r here- never fully. I find myself going to hot tickets during off hours. I HATE waiting in line. What saves me is that I like spending time in my apt. and live near a park. Where are you moving from?

Another native, I just make NY a smaller place for myself. Love apt, live near park, loyal to local merchants, enjoy lots of walking, take advantage of cultural activities, support the local community.

There's a difference between NY'rs who have the accent and are about their families and community and then there's the people who are yuppies, who have moved there and they bring their world to the mix and frown upon the provincialness of NY'rs. It's weird and uncomfortable. I prefer the west coast, but there is a charm about NY that is so old school
