Exactly. You don't want something as fancy as the chairs because then it would be overwhelming. And you don't want something from a different period or style because then it would look too mismatched.

Look at decorating mags/books/websites and try to see what the pros do with chairs like yours. Describe them in more detail. Are they all gold or white with gilding? Simple or a lot of carving? Show us a pic of the type of chair you have. This sounds dangerously tacky.

OR: OK, those are a lot easier to work with. Still, I would consult design sources to see what pros do with those chairs. What about a base and a glass top? Something that is obviously not of the period but stands in the background to highlight the chairs? The challenge would be to find a base that works.

wow. i guess it's a good thing i don't watch TV. chair sounds fantastic to me and some light wood high varnish/gloss (?) table sounds good to me. but i also don't watch HGTV so my opinion is worth what you pay for it.
