Bit of an odd post but what do NYC kids wear to school? Relocating from UK and all school kids here wear school uniform. I'm going to restock their wardrobes before we move (no sales tax on children's clothes here) but have no idea what kids wear? Have girls going into K and 3rd.

op: ha ha ha. I wasn't asking for labels :) I was kind of thinking just to get the little one (cute) sweats for winter and shorts/t-shirt for summer but wondered if a bit too casual. My 3rd grader in any case has very definite ideas about what she'll wear and what she won't. I think I'm going to miss school uniform...

Some schools have uniforms or dress codes some schools don't. It depends on where they are going. If no uni put them in comfortable clothes.

OP: Yes, that's what I was thinking. But started to worry that maybe they'll be the uncool kids in the class if I do that. I just don't know what to expect!

OK, thanks, good to know. I thought there was a sales tax on it all. You're right then, maybe best to wait and less to ship that way as well.

It depends on the school. At some of the private schools and some of the religious schools the DCs wear uniforms. DD is in second grade at a private school w/o a uniform - this winter, most days she wears jeans and a long-sleeve t-shirt (will be short sleeved when the weather gets warmer) or a dress and leggings. The brands are all over the map - Gap, Old Navy, Levis, Tea Collection, MiniBoden, Ralph Lauren, Lands End, etc.

Not odd at all--when we moved back to NYC from FL, we weren't sure what the 13yo's were wearing (in general). In FL kids wore shorts to school, more vibrant tropical colors. We took her clothing but did a little shopping when we got here. After a week at school she bought more jeans, converse and some plaid flannel shirts. Now she's changed her style more and wears dresses with leggings, boots and things she likes from old navy/H&M/Uniqlo. She had a "uniform" at school in FL of khaki shorts & polos but that doesn't exist in her public MS.

Dalton kids wear jeans, shorts, sweats, tshirts. Both boys and girls. And sneakers.

You could look at Landsend.com to get a good idea. Cute pants, skirts and shirts etc. This type of thing more or less.

have dd in 1st grade in public school. winter - wears leggings with long sleeve tshirt with skirt or under a dress. with boots, sneakers or nice shoes. very cute really but casual. have on the expensive side good down coat. also have rain coat, wind breaker, jean jacket and down vest. (we do get all weather here). you'll need rain boots and snow boots (for next year). in the nice weather, she skips the leggings. school does not want kids in flip flops or any type of sandals where they can trip and fall. you can do a sturdy sandal with a rubber/sneaker type bottom if it has a strap across the back. crocs with a strap are fine. jeans are fine too. my dd rarely wears jeans though.

OP, I have a niece who lives in London and children in private school here. Mini boden look will give you an idea of what kids where to school. Of course, some NYC schools and all parochial schools have uniforms as well. In my 11yo son's class, the girls where skirts maybe once a week but rarely do I see dresses at school. The younger children (K) where dresses.

Great question - we are in the same situation!! Except we also have a third one, going into 6th. I've loved them having uniforms in London. What on earth to middle school girls wear (co-ed private)?
