Any time I check babysitter websites (Care.com, etc.) all the nannies (at least those who have some experience and aren't high school kids) indicate they want around $20/hr. That seems crazy to me. We're in Westchester, not even the heart of Manhattan or anything.

If a nanny sounds good, go ahead and follow up with them anyway. I have heard that qualified nannies post that so that they don't waste their time and the families time with families who are only willing to pay 7-10 dollars an hour. I have been paid $25/hour and when someone asks me my rate I usually say "it really depends everything from $10-25/hour". I wouldn't be able to afford to work full time for a family that pays less than 17 though. Luckily for me there are people that value me enough to pay that much or more but I know that I wouldn't be able to afford to pay a sitter that so I am ok babysitting or helping out other families for less as well.

Since when did being a nanny become charity work? When one of the attorneys or finance parents "help me out" with their reduced rates where there work is concerned then I'll "help them out".

OP here: I have a 3 y.o. who's in pre-K everyday until 12:30 and a 5 month old. Plus I work from home, so I'm always around to help. I just don't get it. So frustrated.

The working from home really isn't a benefit to the nanny. A nanny who doesn't know you will figure that you will be micromanaging and criticizing. However, because you will be home to know if everything is alright, you should feel more comfortable hiring someone who sounds good but maybe has less experience.

Whether or not you are there to "help" it is a job for the nanny and she has a right to state her expectation to be taken seriously and paid according to her abilities, not the "going rate" which is a meaningless figure.

I understand how difficult it can be to pay nannies high salaries if you aren't making a fortune yourself. My primary thought on the matter is "Could i live off what I am paying her?" because I can't help but wonder if I am not paying her enough to live off if either she is going to leave to find another job or she will have to work another job in order to make ends meet and if she is working 80+ hours a week, is she really well rested enough to give my DCs the level of care that I want them to have?

I have hired 2 nannies off of Care.com (in NYC) $15 and hour is pretty much the going rate, sometimes they list a higher range, but there is usually room to negotiate

This is what cracks me up about UB. You have countless post about people feeling poor and they have a HHI of 500k or more, but when a nanny ask for OMG $16/hr she's entiltled and ridiculous. How do you think she feels living on 30k in NY?

Ha ha ha, right? Or they ask for opinions about $400 shoes and complain that the nanny drinks the Fiji water.

Ridiculous, " do you like these shoes?" And they post a link to some thousand dollar piece of crap looking shoe that they sell at target, but the nanny does all the housework and take care of their kids for $13.50 an hr. Another thing that cracks me up is they're looking for "Mary Poppins", Mary didn't do housework and she told her boss that she doesn't have to explain herself to him, and kept her job.

Exactly I have worked for many families who say they "couldn't possibly" pay me the $20 per hour I expect and deserve but then I notice they can pay $2,000 for a crib, $1,000 for a stroller, and send their DCs "special" clothes to the dry cleaner.

I have worked for many companies who say they "couldn't possibly" pay me the $200K/year I expect and deserve but then I notice they can pay $2 million for that piece of artwork in the hallway, $20,000 for a desk, and hire a plant watering service to take care of the plants that no one notices unless they're being watered.

Many of these nannies are hardly college educated. I made less money right out of an Ivy League than what some of them are asking for. That to me is not normal. Yes, I appreciate all the hard work, but no, you don't get to make more money than someone who's had more education and is working a corporate job.

and those nannies deserve that high salary. There are somethings college can not teach you, like how to soothe a baby with collic, or how to stop explosive diarrhea.

What you "get" to do is a matter of the market. If someone is willing to pay $20 an hour, what's the nanny supposed to do - say no?

IME nannies making $20 ARE college educated. On another note, fresh out of college I never would've been a nanny no matter how much it paid - it's hard work and I"m not cut out for it.

I saw a posting by a nanny on care.com last year asking for $40/hr to watch 1 "school age" kid and she absolutely won't do light housekeeping. The pic she posted belonged on a sleazy dating site.
