SPEYER or HUNTER: Everyone says for advanced learners or gifted kids that Speyer is the top private option and that Hunter is the top public option. Would love to hear from parents at each school as well as parents with dcs enrolled at both schools. TIA!

Your kid has never had a really bad teacher then. We moved from Hutner to another school (not Speyer) because of a couple of really bad teacher experiences. You get what you pay for in my view at Hunter.

Saint Ann's has a strong sibling policy and takes all faculty kids. They don't only focus on gifted kids. I don't know much about Speyer, but I would not say that SA is exclusively for gifted kids. It's very much for creative kids.

Congrats. My dc did not get into either school but I know someone with older dc at Hunter and younger dc at Speyer. She's indicated that both her dcs are with incredibly smart peers. Both programs are advanced but Speyer is a little more structured and the community a little more "polished" (not unlike the private school set).

There are a couple of families with kids in both schools (who are not on the board and thus will give you frank advice)--I would call the school and ask if you can speak to one of them. FWIW, I would probably choose Hunter just because of the HS option. I think probably Speyer might be a bit better than Hunter because they have hired new teachers who are enthusiastic and doing a great job as opposed to some of the fossils in the Hunter elementary school. However, Hunter HS is probably in the top 3 HS options in NYC (including private) so it's hard to give up that option.

I didn't use the word "fossils" and age is not the issue. "horrible" was the issue. We took an incoming family on a tour after they were accepted a few years ago and after listening to one of the teachers and the way she talked to the students, they immediately declined and went to private.

So you aren't the OR who wrote "...as opposed to some of the fossils in the Hunter elementary school"? Sorry about that. I thought we were talking about age. As for the quality of teachers, all I can say is that opinion varies from kid to kid re teachers. And that's re teachers at any given school.

privates don't tend to keep teachers for years who put little kids into therapy, but publics don't have the same ability to get rid of underperforming teachers. This is Hunter's biggest struggle, imho.

so not true. speyer accepted many students who got less than 98%tile (the minimum threshold for the gifted label) and to be highly gifted, 99.9%tile is where you start. maybe they have a few highly gifted who got SO from hunter and didn't get lucky with the citywide lottery. however, by no means it is for highly gifted kids.

Children in the higher end of the gifted range (EG/PG) will benefit from a much smaller class size which translates to more opportunities for specialized groups and one-on-one attention. Speyer's K class has 16 kids with 3 teachers (2 main teachers and one assistant). Just my opinion. Congratulations and GL with your choice.

Go tour and see what your gut feeling is and see if you can speak with current families at each. I would choose S, but my dc went to Hollingoworth so we're familiar with the leadership/philosophy. H is a great free option but it is under the Board of Ed which means teachers with tenure can't be fired, teaching to tests, etc. Congrats either way.

It is nevertheless true that Hunter teachers who have tenure cannot be let go. They tend to get shuffled. No teaching to tests, I agree, but also a shocking lack of any coherent curriculum in some areas.

Sweet problem to have! Congrats. I'd choose Hunter in a heartbeat. Obv, you save yourself 9 years of $40k/year. Also, the high school factor is HUGE here. Frankly, what elementary school your child attends it not that important. What high school they attend is a different story. If I were you, I'd lunge at the opportunity to know that I all but have Hunter HS in the bag. If you choose Speyer, it's a wild card. And also with private schools, something to consider is that high schools and colleges will choose no more than x number of kids from a certain school. In private school, you're potentially up against the kid whose grandfather has a wing at Philips Exeter named after him; whereas, in public, your kid is less likely to have to compete against those types. Basically, unless your kid is the one with a wing named after his grandfather, I'd choose public with all other things being equal. And finally, all other things are not equal here because Hunter is free. GL and enjoy your options :-)

At Speyer, love Speyer. Don't know about Hunter, but I think classes have more kids per teacher. Student body and parent body at Speyer very friendly and approachable. See if you can call each school, get families you can phone, and talk to REAL people, not feedback from this phony board.

Agree with this. I posted above about this being a sweet problem to have. YOu should talk to real people because you never know what the motives are on this board of the responders. They could be WL Hunter or WL Speyer. Or they could be coming from some vantage point that doesn't apply to you. Or they could have no idea what they're talking about and you won't be able to sense this from what they write on UB.

As a Hunter HS grad, I can say that the kids who come from Hunter elementary had a much harder time in HS and were not as advanced or prepared as the kids who tested in at 7th grade. Some are very bright and did well, but that was the exception and they tended to come from very privileged families who did a ton of enrichment. Talking to parents who are currently at Hunter, things haven't changed much and the HS has not been able to keep a principal for more than a year. They still have an interim principal.

I think Hunter looks for kids who are bright but easy to handle. They have larger class sizes so I can totally understand why. I think Speyer just looks for bright kids and takes the brightest ones even if they are a bit quirky. After the tour ask yourself if you were a kid (gifted or not) which one would you want to go to? Please, as a Hunter parent I would NOT agree that Hunter takes kids who are easy to handle. They may try, but there are a huge number of behavior issues in my son's class. I wish they would do a lot more to weed out the "quirky" kids, if that's what you call them.

np. We're also at one of the schools mentioned by OR, and ITA that these schools can not, and don't even try, to accommodate gifted dc. If dc is in the moderately gifted range he'll likely be fine. There are plenty of those in each grade. But if he's HG or PG? Forget it.

I would agree that those schools have advanced learners, I don't believe those schools spend too much time during the elementary school years worrying about how to optimize the curriculum for those children or address their individual needs. Hunter and Speyer do.

ACtually, Hunter does not spend any time worrying about its most advanced learners.

Seriously, I respectfully disagree. These are excellent schools but they are largely geared for mainstream learners particularly in LS and MS. We (as did many families) declined one or more of those schools for Speyer -the first and only private program geard exclusively for intellectually adanced kids. No other independent school was established solely for these type of children. It is what it is.

These schools have great no doubt Speyer grads will consider them for highschool. But as for LS and MS, I'd have to say Speyer is superior to these especially for highly advanced kids.

np: Trinity is NOT for advanced dcs. we left Trinity in LS because the teacher in first grade resented the math specialist coming in to work with my child who is advanced in math. the resentment vibe was a problem in the class. The specialist also did not give him enough to do during the math portion of the class and he was punished for fidgeting - we were told that they didn't want him working too far ahead of the class...ok but don't punish him because he gets bored and wanted to be doing something besides sitting for 20 minutes waiting. They didn't listen, or really care. then it became our problem and that's how they deal with things.

Agree Speyer and Hunter are the top two in NYC for gifted kids. Hunter has a highschool and a TT one at that but Speyer's lower school is superior to Hunter's lower school.

It does come down to a private vs public school debate but keep in mind Speyer is not your typical private and Hunter is not your typical public. There really should be a seperate gifted schools board.

Speyer believes testing is important but does not rely on score alone to determine whether or not a child can succeed or thrive in an advanced program.

I think it is painfully obvious that Speyer Spammer has infiltrated this post. Speyer is 3rd or 4th tier, on the same tier as Leman or Avenues. It is a last or only choice for most families and they have an extremely high acceptance rate. Not everyone, but mostly everyone. I fully expect a dozen posts about a non-existant 99x8 who is a superstar, but don't believe the hype. Fancy mission statement, that's about it.

This reply above and below mine here is most certainly the anti Speyer sociopath. The seperate, desparate spelling and language are dead giveaways. My kids are way past college. My niece goes to Speyer. Her parents told me to come here and search Speyer. Wowzer! I actually perceive there us some authentic illness and not simply pot-stirring boredom. Can this domain research and review the origin of these postings? That poster,if actually one and the same, could be actually sick.

I think it is painfully obvious you are still trying so desperately to convince people of this so called spammer you've concocted. It's natural to be envious of Speyer but you might as well get used to the fact the school is top choice for families with intellecutally advanced kids, many of whom are superstars. Live with it.

The only thing I am scared of is you. You keep posting the same lies, making it crystal clear to everyone that you bear some grudge against the school. Since the real facts are so readily available from the school, I can't imagine who you are trying to convince.

Yes, the facts (and the financials) are available. Stop Speyer Spammer - you are putting good kids at risk with your irresponsible promotion of a 4th tier school! Look, we get it, you are invested in the school. but your endless postings will not a top-tier make - Speyers financials are scary bad. We have all seen them. So have you. Shame on you.

We have a dc at Hunter for whom the school is a perfect fit, and a dc at tt private for which Hunter was a terrible fit (but we likely would have sent dc2 if they had made the cut off, solely bc it is free). We toured and researched speyer for younger dc at the urging of our psd (didn't for older dc bc it didn't exist yet). We found speyer to be weird and creepy, especially the administration. i know that isn't very specific criticism, but it was enough to completely turn us off even though the work product of the students looked amazing.

Speyer parent. Had this choice last year. Nothing against Hunter (know a couple of lovely families from there) but we felt Speyer's curriculum was more structured and hence better suited for dc's learning style. There are different types of advanced learners. For some, Speyer is a better fir. For others, Hunter is.

Hi, We applied to both. Got w/l at Hunter and in at Speyer. Ended-up at Speyer and dropped out of w/l at Hunter. Another boy from our son's pre-school also went to Speyer. Both families can't say anything but great things about the school. Speyer is trully a place for advanced learners. If that is what is right for your child - Speyer is the hands down in my humble opinion the best school - probably anywhere in the US - for children who are trully giften in academics.
