if u spend as much as u make then it is impossible to feel rich biologically. doesn't matter if u make $10 million per year. u r wasting money on goods instead of saving it to buy you to time to do the things you want to do...635k, single mid 30s, nyc, rich as all shit even when i was making 50k a yr 4 yrs ago

Around 100k and I feel very middle class. We don't live paycheck to paycheck. We have a modest savings. We pay our credit cards off in full every month. We go out to eat a fair amount. We go on vacation once a year. I don't understand how someone can make 7 times as much as us and feel poor.

General rule of thumb: If you make more money than 90% of the rest of the country, you're rich. Doesn't matter if you can't buy the 5 bedroom apartment with the Central Park view or a house in the Hamptons or your own helicopter. Doesn't matter what you "feel", it's an indisputable fact. Just like you probably don't feel like a whiny little douche bag, but you really are.

150K Brooklyn-feel MC mostly, at times UMC. Now with a 3rd kid on the way will definitely feel middle class and just found out we owe about $40K in taxes this year (DH is a freelancer) that wasn't properly being put aside as I thought he was doing this past year, now I feel just under MC. I know that sounds kind of silly perhaps but we will struggle to pay everything now with this turn of events. He said we overspent but we are not elaborate people minus a vacation every year. I don't understand it but working to get it under control. I grew up here and everywhere from poor to LMC to mainly working MC. NOt being whiny here just hones. Can't afford bigger place with third on the way so we will all squeeze in for now. Would shrivel up if we moved to burbs so that's not an option.

We have about 700k in savings and about 500k of equity in our home then abou 250k in some private equity investment. The other thing is, so much of the income is deferred cash and deferred stock which usually goes down in value these days!

Then figure it out and get a grip on reality. You are somehow plowing through the GDP of a third world country every year. You have a problem if you don't recognize that you are filthy rich. The vast majority of people in this country make about 1/33 what you make, so suck it up.

We would be considered very wealthy. Dh owns several business and in a given year with bonus he will make upwards of 20M a year depending on bonus, much more sometimes but only a very good year. We live on the UES and I would assume we are considered upper class. Although I know people with much more and people with old money and "names" who I am sure consider us less than.

honestly we don't spend a lot. dc's are in public school, we drive reasonably priced cars and otherwise live well within our means. biggest fixed cost of course is mortgage and property taxes. dh saved a lot and invested well before we were married and i did the same. Dh also is lucky to be in a business that has done very well and we have benefitted from that greatly. we are in our late 40's

The point of the post was to reassure stinking rich, self-absorbed people that it's perfectly fine that they feel poor when they strive to keep up with the Joneses even though they are bathing in luxury. The premise of the post is that poor little rich girls should be sympathized with, and really it's unfair to view them as privileged and expect them to pay more taxes just because millions of people in their country can't afford health care or nutritious meals.

Around $1 - 2 million, NYC and we are definitely rich. We also don't spend all that much money but feel like we have everything we want (however, we have absolutely no desire for expensive things that just seem like a waste of money). We've saved a ton of money over the last 7 years -- many millions -- because we don't spend much of it each year.

I can't imagine that there's another gay man on here with the same degree of narcissism and insecurity. The self identification with every single post? Why? is this real? we're about the same, family of 5, we both work out of home. definitely feel umc (although, that being said, can't afford the home we would like to buy, which would be around $600 or $700k, in queens). why do you feel "dirt poor"? how is that possible? do you hesitate to buy groceries you need?

I grew up lower middle class - public housing, no vacations, no car, constant money worries, everything cheap, CUNY. It is disgusting to hear people who have so much say they feel poor or even middle class. Disgusting. You folks are living in a bubble and of course, you are unaware of it.

Are you intentionally replying to me? Our only regular vacation is at family who lives near a beach. We eat out only for big events, drive a modest car and send our kids to public school. Both my spouse and I saved a lot before we were married and were able to buy a 2 family row house in Gowanus (Brooklyn) before we had kids. The income from the rental of the apt makes home ownership affordable.

OR: My job provides minimal health insurance and my spouse's job pays for none. So that is a huge nut to cover. I also have significant student loan debt (I paid my way for both under grad and Grad school -- at state schools -- but it is not an insignificant number.) And every cent we have we put into renovating our house. (In truth, we are sitting on at least $700K in equity (half of it sweat/half of it timing) and that is an asset that many middle class people in NYC might not have BUT as to how I feel when I do the finances or one of the kids wants something, I feel very middle class.)

One's sense of wealth is a relative phenomenon (like happiness). In the world of Manhattan private schools, someone with $250k of income is eligible for financial aid; in most places in the U.S., that person would be rich. As amazing as it sounds someone with $1m of income and a young family will feel strained keeping up with the Soros family in the UES (without inheriting a substantial balance sheet); they will be in the bottom half of their child's peer group in terms of wealth. Are they middle class? No. Do they feel middle class? Yes. The key to happiness is being a big fish in a small pond (or at least defining your peer group in a way that rationalizes your perspective)

IDK, I think that prespective is perspective and that you can be a small fish in a big pond and still be happy, because you realize that even though you're a small fish, your pond is better and cleaner than other ponds. I grew up poor and feel quite fortunate on $350k, and there is no way I would ever feel poor or MC>

HISTORY LESSON FOLKS: For all the folks who love saying "Anything over ____ cannot be middle class because the average HHI is ___ in NYC/US" do not know what middle class is. MIDDLE CLASS IS NOT AND NEVER HAS BEEN DEFINED AS MEDIAN INCOME. In 18th and 19th century Europe, the middle class was defined as shopkeepers and other small business owners, but this was not to say 50% of the population achieved this. Let's stop pretending middle class ever meant the middle 33%-66% of income earners; it never did. Rant over.

The point is a lot of people on this board like to argue "you aren't middle class" because you make $100k per year and that's 2x the median income. But 2x the median income is the middle class and has almost always been. We shouldn't be framing discussion about what "Middle class" is on the basis of median income. Middle class is above working class and below "upper class" - middle class traditionally means having significant disposable income beyond basics (food, clothing, shelter) and some sort of autonomy or special training for their job. It has little to do with "median income" ... that's why people talk about the growth of the middle class in India or China. If the "middle class" was just the median 50%, by definition the size of it could not grow or shrink. In this country, of course, MOST people have dipsosable income beyond basics, and middle class is more taken to mean people with white-collar jobs, some education, etc.

$300k is certainly not poor, but it is upper middle class. Look, if we divide the population into quintiles (bottom 20% is poor, 20-40 is lower middle class, 40-60 is middle class, 60-80 is upper middle class, 80-100% is upper class), clearly 300k puts you in the top quintile. But the whole point is that middle class and upper middle class aren't defined this way. $300k is comfortably upper middle class, but certainly not "rich", especially in NYC.

100k isn't middle class. If you make 120k, you're in the top 10th percentile of American households. No matter what stratification you justify it doesn't quite cut down to middle class.

It was really defined as what we now consider UMC -- people with money, but no title, not blue blood. People with professions like artisans, doctors, lawyers, etc. It was also important in terms of defining values. Middle class/the bourgeois were thought to have had good values while the lower and upper did not. Even so, I still think that today's definition of middle class does not easily encompass those making 250K-plus, even in NY, because even the truly middle class in many ways do things that were once reserved for the upper classes. I think this to a great degree has to do with our celebrity obsessed culture, but also the evolution of the American Dream to mean that we are entitled to whatever we want, regardless of whether or not we truly need or deserve it. I do believe decent healthcare, education and education are rights everyone should have, but is everyone entitled to private school, a huge apartment and an escalade in every driveway. Probably not.

Entitled to an Escalade? Please. Not one person on earth is "entitled" to a brand of car (or a huge apartment or private school). Too many people confuse "being able to buy" with "being entitled to." They aren't the same, but thinking they are screws up our society.

I've been saying this over and over in the past here on UB but for some reasons most here believe income is the only indicator of what social class you belong to. I always asked if that would make that truck driver from NJ who won millions in the lottery a few years back somehow UMC now.

Last year $650k. This year $375-450k depending on bonus. I know rationally we are doing well, but we still feel pinched. We try to save our bonus and spend our base ($275k) and with 2 DCs in private pre-school, modest place on far UWS, and pretty modest life, we rip through that $275k incredibly fast. But for those haters, here is the math: $275k = $137k after tax. That is a bit more than $11k per month. After rent, it's $6200. Annualize preschool and subtract, we are down to $3500. And between all of our other expenses, somehow we burn through that. And I promise we do NOT live big (vacations, etc.). But we do live comfortably- have a car that is garaged, do take 1-2 trip to visit family via plane a year, etc.

$72K single, middle class, Dallas. Some people here have a grip, some people here need to get a grip. During the dotcom boom I made $100k a year, and that felt rich. What I make now is the equivalent of $56k back then, so MC is about right, maybe UMC since I'm single. But realistically what I make now puts me in the top 7%. Yes, that's right! So I guess I'm really UMC! Also, I have no more than about $25,000 in savings, so people who have "only" $700,000 in savings need to get a grip too. I lost a lot during the dotcom bust, if you must know.

I'm always amazed at how people bash others on this board. my dh earns a little over 500k and i have always felt poor in nyc. i was probably one of the poorest if not the poorest in dd's preschool class. in nyc 500k is not a lot of money. yes, i have ft nanny. i have 3 children under the age of 5. we manage to pay our bills. we are now living with no money in the bank as we were pushed out of the city and purchased a house for over a million dollars. we did minor renovations. minor became major as it cost much more than we anticipated. we can afford the small daily things. it's the big stuff that becomes problematic. it's easy to feel poor when so many are receiving help from family members to pay for nursery school or camp. overall, it's easy to feel "poor" in nyc.

I think of rich as treating trust funds and setting up trust funds for your own children. I think or poor as can't afford to buy groceries. I feel (upper) middle class only because I have friends and family who are much less comfortable and live middle class, and I have friends and associates who are jetsetting and have vacation homes and live rich. Yet objectively, we're quite affluent at 500-600k. We put a lot of it in the bank, so our lifestyle is scaled to if we were at about 250k. But I don't feel that way because we don't live that way.

LOL (but really crying). Being the least wealthy among a bunch of rich people does not qualify you to whine that you are poor. Poor people don't own houses (let alone $1m houses). Poor people don't have nannies (let alone F/T). I wonder what your "small daily things" are. Mine's Starbucks 1-2x p/mo. What's your problematic big thing--a European vacation or a private French tutor?

Mission, housing is $2300 month for a 1br. :-/ We've had some big expenses these past years- medically- over 30k's worth of medical bills, so that might be the problem.

Yep, that's a big chunk. Also, unless youre in a big newish loft 1-bdrm you're paying too much in rent, at least for the mission.

I'm not convinced they're overpaying in the Mission. When I was in SF, I was on 19th, a couple blocks from Valencia and paid $900 for a 10x10SF room and then $1200 (down from $1350) for a 12x25SF room with 4 other roommates.

85k, NYC UWS, and I feel fortunately middle class. Sure, housing in NYC is 5 times more expensive than out of the city so I'm not putting away as much savings as I would if I left, but at least I am never hurting for food or rent, and I have enough to spend some on leisure. Anyone above the US median (55k) should feel blessed and stop acting like they're on Gossip Girl.

$32K, Manhattan. Single, no kids, student loan debt. I feel poor. Parents who say they feel pinched on vastly higher incomes--don't feel bad. I can get by skipping at least 1 meal a day, living in a pit, and wearing my clothes until they fall apart, but your kids can't and deserve better.

95-100k family of three. NYC. feel middle class and happy in our edifying but not financially lucrative careers and modest by nyc standards lifestyle. (well private selective-uni educated nyc'er standards) we have decent savings but know that if a catastrophe happened parents could help. i realize that people with no family backup often feel they have to find high paying jobs to feel secure.

DINK, make about 100K a year. Feel comfortable but definitely not rich. Honestly, some of these posts... I'm a teacher (public school in NYC) and regularly have students who wear the same clothes every day of the week and complain to me of hunger on a regular basis. It makes me so sad that they have so little when some people have so much and are still complaining. I'm proud to serve these families and I'm grateful for what I have. Many (not all) of the posts on this thread show me how truly out of touch the 1% is.

9.5k annually between two 20-somethings (not including approx. 300/month in food benefits); I feel as poor as I basically can. Every month, it is rent or water, water or electricity, electricity or internet. I grew up middle class, first upper, then lower, and I live in Florida.

60K Live in Brooklyn, feel well off. I mean I grew up poor, most of you people bemoaning being "poor" really don't have a clue. And hell, I grew up poor in Massachusetts, which is completely different from say being poor in Louisiana. I mean yeah its more expensive in the city, but just the fact that you can live in the city should be enough to propel you into at least MC. Perspective people, get some.

Obama considers those of you making above $250,000 as rich; and as such, you are subject to the millionaire tax. That said, down deep it must feel gooood to you liberals, progressives, socialists, and Communists who like to spread the wealth around. Lovely.

Bottom line: It's easy to 'feel' poor when you spend more than you make. Of course things are tight when that's the case. But if you have a FT nanny (and don't also work FT yourself), or own a valuable home (or don't but rent an expensive one), or send your kids to private school, or drive cars that cost more than is necessary to simply get from point A to point B, etc. you can't possibly consider yourself poor, or even middle class. Your problems are high class problems, and you are by definition upper, or at least upper middle class.

20,800. I live in Modesto, CA. My net monthly income is $1,680. My monthly expenses (rent, phone, water/electricity/gas/garbage, gym, transportation, food)are in the $1350-$1500 range. What's left goes to sundries, books (I'm a master's student in English Literature). I don't own a car, or have a TV. I use my phone's data plan to go online when at home. I feel lower middle class, but fairly satisfied. I have to watch my budget like a hawk after the bills are paid, and I don't get to go out to dinner often, nor have I bought more than 12 new items of clothing in a year for the past couple of years. I only own 4 pairs of jeans and 10 pairs of shoes. Yet I am content, I am employed, I have a lovely rental that I've slowly furnished with second-hand things and homemade art pieces, I have lots of love in my life and in my work. So although fiscally I feel lower-middle class or even upper lower-class, I am rich in spirit.

The majority of the posts on here make me sick. My fiancee and I make a combined $50,000 a year in upstate NY. We can barely afford to replace our dryer that just broke and you're all bitching about not being able to afford multiple homes, or $2,700 pre-schools. You are everything that is wrong with the economy.

$150k/year back in '05 at a BB during the MBS glory days for nearly a year. Intern from up north. Single. Very rich. Subletted an East Village pad for 2k/month. Brought a beater up, wasn't worth much, one day it disappeared, was too busy to figure out what happened to it. Still have no idea. Made lots of IB friends. Snow everynight, drank 7 nights a week, would show up to work and sober up with yeyo. Got caught in cross fire once, met Trump, slept with more women than I recall. Had a gun pulled on me when I cleaned out a fish at a gambling joint. Ah, what it meant to be a 22 yo stallion in Manhattan. All in a new york minute. Came back with a few grand banked, tried to live the same life style, overdrew my bank account within 1 week. I love NY. Miss it.

My husband and I make 50K. No children yet. We are in our 40's. We live paycheck to paycheck. My father is in his 80's and lives on his pension of 50k in the bank. He also gets a salary of 1k a month from Germany from being a Holocaust survivor. He helps us out from time to time with the rent. My husband is a dispatcher for a corporate car service and I am a part-time teacher who does mystery shopping on the side for extra income. We pay 1200 a month for rent in Queens. Our other expenses include cell phone, cable, shopping at Cosco's, student loans, credit cards, gas, and electric. We would be considered working class but we feel middle class and are happy and comfortable with our two cats. Please no judging.

$70,000 between my husband and myself. We live in Pittsburgh and feel middle class. After paying our mortgage ($550 for a renovated 3 bedroom. Just putting a plug in for our gloriously cheap city), student loans, and bills we are able to eat and drink fairly well, donate 10% of our income and try to save about the same amount. We both work at nonprofits, have a lot of debt, but feel EXTREMELY blessed.
