Just received a telephone call from 4-year-old DS's preschool teacher. She informed me that DS had hit another boy in the face during play time. Then, she said that actually, neither she nor the other teacher had seen the incident take place. But she heard the other child crying, so she asked him what happened, and the boy said that DS had hit him. When she tried speaking with DS, he got very upset, started to cry, and didn't explain what had occurred. Obviously I will ask DS about it when I get home from work, but is there anything else that I should be doing? DS knows that hitting is wrong, and he doesn't go around hitting people randomly. On the other hand, he might have thought that he was playing, or it may have been in response to the other boy, etc. I don't know... Thoughts? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

If your DS hit another boy in the face, have him take responsibility for this and do not make excuses for him. [ Reply | More ]

this is a great teachable moment, op. remember, boys don't like to sit down face to face and stare. do something with him so your'e sitting next to or walking but not looking. talk about school and hitting and ask about what happenned. then you can get the facts from his perspective and help him think about what he could have done differently, how it felt, how it felt to get in trouble, and why it was important to treat others as you wish to be treated. thanks for the input. i wonder if i should make DS apologize to the other boy, or give his mom a call. (school is closed tomorrow so we won't see them until next monday.) [ Reply | More ]

IMO a call to the parent isn't necessary. Sounds like you are on it [ Reply | More ]

You need to speak with your son without his feeling ganged up on. Also, if he denies it, remember that no one actually saw it happen. While it probably did, there is a chance the other child made it up to get some attention (small children do these things, my DF's son used to do this). [ Reply | More ]

or it could have been someone else or it could have been an accident. 4yos don't always have great control of their body. Try to speak him in a neutral non-judgemental way. [ Reply | More ]
