Nepotism/preferential treatment by Coaches for their own children. Youth sports are full of parent coaches because --lets face it--that's who is going to do it. How many times have you seen the coache's kid get the most playing time or the most coveted position or automatically be on the starting line-up over and over even if no better than anyone else. It breaks my heart watching the other kids --they all see it and know it. You wonder how many talented children quit because of the dysfunctional dynamic with most parent coaching. Youth sports are full of parent coaches because non of us would let a random volunteer adult anywhere near our children. Pedophile anyone? [ Reply | More ]

If a parent is willing to coach, he/she usually has some experience/love for the sport. Coach has probably passed this on to the child. This child will probably be stronger than the child of a parent who has never spent time kicking or throwing a ball with their child. I have coached all 4 of my DC in rec and travel and am constantly amazed at the moms and dads who drop off the kids and use youth sports as a baby sitting service. You should spend some time helping your child as would help him/her with homework .... oh sorry you get a tutor for that. [ Reply | More ]

exactly. it can be hard to help your child out with the lesson of guess what --people get things they dont deserve and you have to keep working hard and sitting the bench! [ Reply | More ]

I've heard this too. My friend's son is having that problem in football this fall - coaches play their own kids in every play and other kids who are better or the same play maybe 1-2 per game. OTOH, I've seen parent coaches bend over backwards to make sure they aren't doing that. Sometimes I htink part of the problem is that parent coaches are paying more attention to their own kid on the field and therefore believe that he's a better player bc they see more of his playing.
