Great children's books that take place in NYC? Need gift for friends who just moved back. Pre-school. Thanks. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think there's a book called 21 elephants about the Brooklyn Bridge. There's a bunch about the little red lighthouse (under the GW Bridge), but I don't recall any names. [ Reply | More ]

I may be off on the exact titles, but Miffy Loves NY; The ABCs of NY (S is for scaffolding, and other things kids really see everyday,) Go Wild in NYC (about nature in NY.) [ Reply | More ]

Fireboat...thought not sure about that age. It's a picture book, but the topic might be too mature since it deals with 9/11. [ Reply | More ]

I love "Down in the Subway" and another book called "A Year In the City" (out of print but worth the search -- even though it's not specifically NYC but a generic city that looks exactly like NYC). Don't know the authors but an Amazon search will probably bring them up. [ Reply | More ]

Query--OP, how old are you? In my parents' generation (they graduated college in the early 50s) this would have been much more common among UMC families. I even remember my dad saying to me (in the 70s, when I wanted to get a job during high school): "no daughter of mine has to work." Now that he's in his 80s, and I'm in my 50s (with a successful career and a family) he gets it and is really proud of my accomplishments. [ Reply | More ]

Hattie and the Wild Waves by Barbara Cooney; a wonderful old book is The Travels of Marco by Jean Merrill, about a pigeon who leaves his coop (I always read this as co-op) and flies into different New York City neighborhoods and tries the foods [ Reply | More ]
