so you'd be sending nanny for her own benefit? i guess you could offer it but since she isn't the mom i don't think i'd push

No, I'd be sending my baby to socialize with local babies!

then the baby might get some enjoyment. My son was pretty engaged at that point and I think they learn from watching the older babies.

depends on whether nanny is welcomed and feels comfortable.

^^^ in general, it's probably better for the nanny to find her own groups than to "send" her to socialize like that.

asking a nanny to take infant to a class or to take an older child on playdates is fine. but when talking about a moms group (which is really what an infant playgroup is) you're talking about adult socialization so it's awkward to arrange that for the nanny. It makes more sense for her to socialize during the day with other moms and nannies she meets on her own in classes or at the park and clicks with. You can't force her to hit it off with the women you are friends with.

And I doubt the women you are friends with will be thrilled about you sending your nanny to their moms group. Seriously.

Well, how do I know? If I ask won't they feel obligated?

np Doubt it. If it's a group for babies and moms, a nanny would change the dynamic.

Yes. A playgroup for INFANTS is for the benefit of the mothers--not the babies.

Funny. I host a group for moms with babies ages 3-9 months in my apartment weekly. One day a nanny showed up with a baby that I didn't recognize. It was awkward and I didn't know how they learned of the group. Found out later that another mom (a no-show that day) sent them because the baby's mom is her boss. Now it is a big issue and the group is breaking into two--one for moms only and the other for nannies. I was really surprised that someone would send anyone to my house without asking first!

I know. Now, this woman is all worked up and is having a separate group of nannies, which is fine (great!) with me. I didn't mind having a nanny show up but she was so, so uncomfortable and you could tell she was forced into it. We were discussing breast pumps when she arrived. I was so annoyed that someone would just arrive at my house without warning in any case!

It is elitist to not include nannies.

Mommy groups are for mommies-- to socialize, ask questions, trade tips... nannies do not need this kind of group. Theoretically, they have child care experience so they don't need the advice, and they don't need to make "new mom friends" for themselves because they aren't also new moms!

I think you are right. So weird to send your baby with a nanny to an infant playgroup--that is for moms! So obvious.
