What do you consider tacky or trashy when it comes to jewelry (engagement, or otherwise)? And what do you consider classy or classic?

I don't like the words tacky or trashy because everyone has diff. taste in jewelry. I like antique or antique inspired jewelry. Not a fan of the solitare diamond. Very cookie cutter. I like to have pieces that 80% of the city won't have

yup very individual. Unless a solitair is like 3ct or over, it looks funny on my fingers. I would love some serious finger coverage

I guess I do think it's tacky when someone has a very large stone in her engagement ring. I think it's tacky when women wear other diamond jewelry during the day.

tacky is anything from the retail stores - tacori, tiffany's, ect. it shows a complete lack of imagination. classic is anything that shows the wearers individuality in a tasteful manner.

np tiffany diamonds and their bands are so overrated. They jack up the prices for the name. What I think is silly is paying a premium for something that's really not a premium. You can go elsewhere, get the same great stone and save a nice chunk of change

you MUST do your homework with any big purchase. WHen looking for a diamond you must know who's a reputable jeweler is, make a private appt, see loose stones (never buy a set stone) and know what stats are good for the shape you're looking into. Must know good stats and bad stats, ect. I would never send anyone to 47st to one of those counter stores. There are a handful of great ppl there but usually have a private office up high in the buildings.

A silver necklace I got from there a long time ago is so tarnished I don't even know what color it is anymore. I've never bought a diamond from there so I can't compare that. I know my jeweler well and like his quality and prices better than Tiffany's.

I hate the pave look in rings. Also hate side diamonds or halos. I think it's a trashy Home Shopping Network kind of look. I prefer vintage or antique (turn of the century) jewelry. I like filigree and color gemstones, and agree with the poster above about cookie-cutter styles. Tiffany solitaires are just not my thing, even though it's almost the definition of "classic."

I think ppl confuse pave with costume jewelry. When you have great diamond stones that are pave and set precisely but a great jewelry artist, it will look gorgeous. Will look like an heirloom and not from the $.99 cent store

That's not really true. If you look at real Victorian jewelry, you will see a lot of understated pieces in yellow gold filigree without diamonds. The bling jewelry in pave and halo tries to imitate royal jewels, and certainly does NOT look authentic. It looks like an imitation, albeit an expensive one.

yes victorian can have their filigree work but their are other pieces that have pave'd halos around them and they are just beautiful. I've seen authentic halo pieces and loved them. When we were looking the pieces we saw were just too small for my fingers but they were authentic and gorgeous. You just need a great jewelry artist. Not this Kay jewelry crap..their pcs are shitty looking

Again, the authentic pieces usually have a halo of seed pearls, not diamonds. The diamond pave/halo is a recent trend, and I hope it goes away.

it's actually not recent. I used to have a link to a site that had authentic halo's antique pcs. WIsh I still had it so you could see it's not recent but just made a come back. I actually love the look as long as it's done right and as close to the actual inspired look as possible.

I think with all the Chinese knockoffs, there's a trend toward unique vintage pieces over the brand name ones. Personally, I can't tell the difference between a real 3ct Tiffany solitaire and the 20 dollar version you get on canal street. I prefer jewelry that's unique enough that it does not prompt mass production of replicas.

I love these types of threads because it's fun to hear about people's different tastes and style. Personally, I love a solitaire on my ring finger, and a classic pearl necklace around my neck. I think all the jewelry with side stones and halos and all these other effects designed to make the piece look more flashy or expensive are tacky. If a stone is good, you don't need all the extra glitz.

so you think the only purpose of 3 stone rings is to make the center stone look bigger? i have a tiffany 3 stone engagement ring, and that never occurred to me. the outside stone are colored. looks more interesting to me, and I didn't want a big stone sticking out and getting in my way. it feels practical and tasteful to me. so funny that someone thinks that's tacky!

I agree with the poster above. I don't like three stone rings, and especially don't like the two small sapphires on the sides of a bigger diamond. Not necessarily because it's supposed to make the diamond appear bigger but because it looks like every single ring in Macys.

By the three stone, I meant the three stone diamond one- it is meant to simulate the look of a larger diamond with three stones (less expensive). As far as the colored side stones, it just looks dated and not much like an engagement ring to me.

Just got from DH a wedding band...16 years after the fact LOL ... we wore simple bands all that time and he updated me with a Cartier wedding band, platinum/diamonds. It is a new thing for me, I feel really self conscious even though I have a ton of beautiful jewelry from DH , much of it from Cartier as well. It is a funny thing, gals and jewelery, isn't it.

I think diamonds are tacky. I'm not sure why women still buy them. It's such a scam, and the ethics behind the diamond industry are absolutely horrifying. Whenever I see a big honking stone on a woman's hand I wonder what kind of person she is to choose a sparkly trinket without considering the humanitarian disaster that her shopping decision propagates. I see a lot of upper class women putting their diamonds away, and I hope the rest of the country will follow.

I do not like silver jewelry or pierced earring on babies. I get sick of jewelry that becomes too popular- David Yurman. Love a diamond in a platinum setting- emerald cut is my favorite. Like simple classic pieces- round diamond studs, diamond wedding band- emerald cut diamonds all around.
