describes the rate that information can be down loaded /uploaded from your mobile handset. 3G is sort of like ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) broadband compared to dial up for internet (this is from google)

it will be able to work off cell phone networks (for a monthly service fee), the current version needs to be in range of a wi-fi hotspot to be able to connect to the internet.

3G means that you can use it where you get phone service (almost anywhere) not just where you get wifi. Many places require you to pay for wifi. Imagine having accounts at airports, starbucks, etc. PITA. Wait for the 3G. It's a fun toy...not a necessity.

No sense getting 3G capability if you aren't going to pay AT&T for 3G data service. What is it - $40/ month?

Was advertised at 29.99 for unlimited, 19.99 for a set amount. You can turn it on/off as you please. So if you usually keep it at home, but would like to get the service for the summer at your beach house, you can do that.

NP: Do you have to decide which plan ahead of time by calling AT&T, or do you just pay for what you use? Like if you use under the set amount, they charge you 19.99?

I think you have to decide when you set up the service. The man I spoke with was unsure about 3G abroad....said best bet will be to use wifi. I want to get it for when I'm in europe. I don't need my laptop, but would like to have the ipad for e-mail, movies, whatever.

DH got me one two days ago...it doesn't have 3G, so I'll see how well it works around the city and where I can get free wifi. He said it's for my bed and I can get another one for my purse. He is such a dork.

np: My dh is like that, he is an engineer and practical to a fault. I have come to accept that him giving me useful things (like GPS and iPads) is his way of being romantic.

I think she's saying don't pay for a feature you won't use. If you are in Manhattan I would avoid the 3G. It's the same network that the iPhone uses which I've heard sucks in the city (I'm in CA so I don't know this for a fact).

Basic iPad connects to internet with Wifi. If you buy a more expensive iPad, you can also connect to the internet via ATT's 3G network, but you have to pay monthly for that ability to connect when you are not in a wifi spot.

All iPads come with Wifi. Why would you be against Wifi? Where its available, its faster than 3G.

I'm interested in this post because all I have heard so far is that really no one needs one. And like bottled water, it's up to Apple to convince people that they do.

I think if you would like the Kindle you'd like the iPad. It has several distinct advantages over the Kindle- mainly it's backlit (so you can read it in the dark) and you can go online with it. You can watch videos (the HD is supposed to be stunning), it's got cool and functional apps like the iPhone.

I like my MacBook Pro, but I love real paperback books. So I don't see a Kindle in my near future.

I love real books too, but I am starting to think about all that paper. I never sold back a single textbook in college, and there is about a ton of paper there in text books alone. I am a book hoarder.

I used to work in publishing and I spent a fair amount of time in paper plants. Book paper consumption is pretty small in the whole world of paper, and doesn't really bother me. Catalogs? That's a whole different story.

The Kindle is a so much better eBook reader. I cannot read a book on the iPad for a prolonged time. It hurts my eyes.

Right; its a device with limited functionality. Completely unnecessary - has no real capabilities that my $500 laptop lacks, and that laptop can do many important things that the iPad can't (e.g. edit MS Word docs). But I went to the Apple store today (CPS), and I'm going back tomorrow to get one. Somehow, reading the NYT on it was so much better than doing the same on the laptop. DW, DCs (10 and 6), and I will use in the apt. So, I'm skipping the 3g bit. And I'm not paying extra for more storage. But I can afford $500 for it, and using that elegant piece of equipment is going to give me great pleasure; actually, this surprises me, because I generally enjoy getting the job done with the cheapest, off-the-shelf technology.

I bought my dh one of those mini netbooks for his bday last year and it was a COMPLETE waste of money. It was good for email and that's it. No one realized how much time you would spend scrolling to see/read an entire website. The jury is still out for me on this iPad.

You have it backwards. An iPad is not a netbook. In fact, just as using netbooks is often less pleasant than using a notebook computer, using the iPad is MORE pleasant than using a notebook.

Almost no one thinks that netbooks are better than notebooks. People buy them because they are cheaper than netbooks. Also, many people (esp. younger users) have no problem with the smaller screen.

NP: for me I totally see the use of an Ipad - cracking open and starting up a notebook is not always convenient
