Schools in Los Angeles: Any suggestions for a third grader? Looks like we're moving. Also, where should we live? TIA. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Live near work, because commuting here takes forever. If you have a choice, Santa Monica has good schools and lots of things to do on evenings and weekends, but stay north of Wilshire to be in a less trafficked and quieter area. Santa Monica is also a separate city & school system from LA, so you can avoid a lot of the problems that come with such a huge bureaucracy. [ Reply | More ]

If you will be working downtown, look at the corridor from North Hollywood to Glendale & Pasadena. Good schools, good weather, easy to get to work without too much traffic most days. [ Reply | More ]

ITDA. NoHo is way too hot in the summer - it's in the Valley, really (although, at least it's on the red line, so commuting is a breeze) - plus it has a decent share of the violent crime in LA. Glendale & Pasadena are where all of my young, single/DINK friends live (except for the ones who live in WeHo). If you're considering the north side/valleys, stay west, in the more family-dense areas. [ Reply | More ]

Don't live in Beverly Hills unless you really can afford it. Our kids go to school with a few families who just squeezed into the zip code in order be able to say they live in BH and so their kids can be in in BH schools, but they are stuck in a perpetual game of keeping up. I'm not saying it's the end of the world to be the least rich kid in your class, but it's not fun for a preteen/teenager to always be trying to catch up socially. [ Reply | More ]

If working downtown, I would consider Pasadena/San Marino. Beautiful old classic California homes, really excellent public schools, and close enough to have a decent commute [ Reply | More ]
