Babysitter vs. in-home daycare for a 6 m.o. - any strong opinions, and why? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Good arguments for both. Personally, I preferred the one-on-one attention my dd got from her babysitter. [ Reply | More ]

I agree. A good babysitter, in my experience, easily adapts to new situations as the child ages. Naps, bottles, foods, classes, potty training, eventually preschool - it's constantly evolving. [ Reply | More ]

Sometimes it can be hard to find sitters. I have been having good luck with sitter city. [ Reply | More ]

A good babysitter beats an OK daycare in my book, but alas, an OK daycare would beat a bad babysitter! [ Reply | More ]

that makes sense. how about great in-home daycare vs great babysitter? I go back and forth; grew up in a great in-home and DD has great babbysitter. I guess as long as either is great, its hard to complain... [ Reply | More ]

np: great babysitter trumps all until 2yo and then great daycare would IMO. [ Reply | More ]

i was very happy with in home for the first two years, then he outgrew the structure--I liked the in-home because there were a few other kids to amuse him and play with--and i really liked the caregiver--at 2+ he is now in pre school and with a nanny [ Reply | More ]

I've used both and also a daycare center and have to say I prefer the daycare center. Structure was better, more adults, more supervision, health regs followed to the tee. [ Reply | More ]

OP here: I posted because wanted to know if the general opinion here also thinks there are two main "dangers" that I am always told of when ask - that with a babysitter you have no control over your helpless baby being with a stranger all alone in the house, and with an in-home daycare the baby is sick all the time. So I wanted to know if this would come up in the replies and whether as a first-time mom I might be worring a little too much... Am I? [ Reply | More ]

Well it sure isn't good if you feel like your baby's with a "stranger". There are a lot of really good, warm, loving babysitters out there. It just takes a little time and patience to find them. [ Reply | More ]

I put my dd in a in-home daycare and she did start to get sick all the time. She caught every little bug that any other child had and there were only about 7 other children. I had to end up taking her out (despite liking the provider, structure, etc.) and just getting a nanny. [ Reply | More ]

love my day care . #2 started at 6 months a few months ago. i feel he is happier with the socialization and safer with lots of eyes on him. this baby for some reason has not gotten sick just some sniffles. babysitters make me nervous unless its your mom or family member, i would be so paranoid all day. For an infant, I prefer a good daycare center over a nanny/babysitter but I'm sort of indifferent on in-home daycare vs. babysitter. It would depend on the specifics of each caregiver (how much experience, references, etc.) and also how many other DC the in-home daycare had and the age distribution. [ Reply | More ]

Babysitter for the one on one attention a baby needs, but be sure to check closely on sitter's references. And especially with a new sitter, make random unannounced visits to make sure that sitter is what she really seems to be and that you have a secure, "right" feeling about the care situation that you have just walked into unannounced. Some like nanny cam too. [ Reply | More ]

daycare center, yes, but not in-home. I would go with the nanny in that case. [ Reply | More ]
