I don't get people why more people don't make baby food. Like why would you buy a jar of bananas instead of just mashing one. Why wouldn't you cook and mash a sweet potato?

Baby jars are easier to put in diaper bag.

So store the homemade in baby food jars. I've noticed that more picky eaters ate pre-made baby food than the kids I have(and know) that were given homemade.

I agree and I'm the poster suggesting using jars for homemade. I relayed my own experience and really don't get the judgemental label. I freelance and happen to cook mostly every day. Baby food in jars can be handy but we didn't get into that habit of convenience. For us it wasn't necessary, for some people it may be.The ultra uppercase post seems a bit of a loud and contentious reaction...

Puhlease. Ds is a ridiculously picky eater. I made homemade food (and I'm a pretty good cook) which he spat out. Then happily ate the jars. EVERY kid is different. But you probably can't see that from way up there on your high horse.

Why don't people cook everything from scratch all the time. We live in a fast food society.

I get that. But baby food doesn't even require ingredients.

It doesn't require ingredients? What, you just summon it with your magic wand?

You may be drawing the conclusion wrong here. I tried making my own & I'm a good cook and dd would refuse refuse refuse. Tried jarred and she'd eat. Don't know what it is. But I think in our case the pickiness came before the jarred food.

Oh, so you expect the new moms to cook dinner for the hubby AND cook baby food, too? Feel free to do that yourself but don't impose on others. I fed from jars which my ds loved then as soon as he grew out of them, I fed him regular food that everyone in the family eats. He eats everything.

How do you get the baby jars if you don't buy jarred food? Obviously you do buy it, thus discrediting your entire post.

OP here. I'm all for convenience and use jars on the go or if there's nothing else. It's just funny that people think it's such a big deal.

I hardly mashed at all. Did not start solids until 6 months and both kids were pretty much ready for chunks of food then. Food from a jar was never a favorite here.

I agree, bananas are better made by yourself. In fact, I make most of my own baby food - but I would never write a post like yours. How can you wonder why people use baby food? Are you simple?? First, you aren't supposed to make certain foods yourself because baby food manufacturers have access to better organic produce and meats (i.e. carrots without nitrates, etc.). But more obviously, it's simply easier and faster to feed your baby a varied and healthy diet if you use at least some baby food. What don't you get about that?

Did I say that people should make EVERY food all the time? I know all about nitrates and need for convienience. I used jars for health or convinience. I just don't understand people who think it's so hard or time consuming.

Because it IS time consuming. Like I said, I make most of my dc's food and it takes alot more time to shop for all organic produce and meats, cook, puree/chop, and freeze cubes than it does for me to buy a jar of baby food. You're delusional if you think it doesn't.

np: um, i didn't do 1/2 that stuff. eas enough to buy organic for baby as i mostly do for the family. not much cooking involved in baby food unless you're talking the microwave. i mashed so no pureeing or chopping and there was no freezing of cubes involved. and i'm not particularly domestic and i've used jars from time to time, but really, mashing up a banana or some peas is not really time consuming.

You don't cook the sweet potatos, chicken, fish, and eggs that you feed your child? I know you said you weren't domestic, but you might want to consider ratcheting up.

I disagree about the varied diet. There is much more variety in the produce aisle than in the baby food aisle. I made all of my own baby food and dd ate a lot of foods that just weren't available pre-made. However, I certainly understand it's easier to buy a jar -- just not healthier or more varied.

Carrots are never without nitrates--some might have lower levels of nitrates, but it's naturally occurring! Nitrates and Commercial Baby Foods -
Are Commercial Baby Foods Nitrate Free?
Are Commercial Baby Foods Safer When it Concerns Nitrates and Feeding Baby?
Jarred commercial baby food carrots (and other jarred commercial baby food vegetables) have nitrates too! Nitrates are naturally occurring and thus cannot be removed! Even jarred organic carrot baby foods have nitrates.
Commercial baby food companies will tell you that they SCREEN for nitrate levels, not that they remove nitrates. They also note that they do this voluntarily - because there is no law that requires them to do screening. There is NO government regulation, law or mandate that commercial baby food companies must screen for nitrates.
Commercial baby food companies may buy veggies that are grown in a part of the country where the nitrate contamination of soil is lower, where the sun shines more or where Farmer's do not use high levels of nitrogen containing fertilizers.

Because I work all day long and am just too tired to make baby food. It's just easier to buy the jars. But I wish I could make my own.

The examples you gave are unfair. A banana could be mashed, and a sweet potato just goes into the oven. But what about pears and apples that have to be peeled, cored, cooked, pureed? I just did this last night and it took forever because DB kept crying and I needed to stop doing what I was doing. Not to mention the cleanup. I WOHM and there's just enough hours in the day.
