[-]I am having a 40th birthday party for DH. He told his mother about it and she started crying that she couldn't afford to come and wants to see the kids, etc. So we are paying for her to come. Now she is NOT helpful at all when she is here. She is not elderly or in bad health-just lazy and acts like she is the Queen Bee. So we get a call that we are going to need to make hair, nail and make up appointments for her the day of the party so she "can look nice for everyone who is coming to see her." Oh and she really wants a nice dress to wear and a hat so can we go to Ann Taylor and pick her up something. What part of this is a party for HER SON doesn't she understand??? Oh and not once has she expressed any gratitude towards us for payi...

[-]Question about portable car DVD players that belt over headrest. Have two kids, 21mo and 4.5yo. Should I get something that plays on each monitor independently (so they can watch their own shows) or make them share the video experience (player hooked up to two monitors)?
6 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]If you're doing after market installation, I would get two and strap them to the headrests. It is very difficult to position one in the center and it can be dangerous if not secure. This is what we did and we only use them on road trips out of the city (not day-to-day driving around).
[ Reply | Options ]Why can't they look at the scenery? That's what ALL UBers did as kids. Our country place is 2 to 3 hours (depending on traffic) outside the city. During the school year, we generally go out every weekend. For a brief moment we considered having the dealership install seatback dvds for our kids, then we though, why?!? Kids learn from seeing and they shouldn't be plugged in/watching a screen just because they might have to take a long drive.

[-]I know someone who had a very close family member die today (a cousin who was raised like a sibling) and they have to go to a conference and wont be leaving until this Sunday and won't be back until 8 days after that. He is thinking of asking his cousin's family to wait until he comes back for the funeral. Is that a reasonable amount of time to ask someone to wait? I thought he would just cancel his trip but apparently he thinks asking them to wait isn't far fetched.

[-]Boycott Procter & Gamble! All their liquid products have massive openings, so the product pours out and you waste money and packaging. Happens with their Pert shampoo, Ivory dishwashing liquid ... Really obnoxious, irresponsible company.

[-]How dangerous is it to have window guards that are not easily removable by adults? What is risk of being trapped in a fire? (Should we spend $$$ to replace them with the removable kind?)
4 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]What floor do you live on? We are on the 10th floor - so the only way we are going out a window in a fire is if a wonderfully sexy and strong fireman rides up on a bucket ladder and helps us out. The gates are only on the bottom window, not the top so you can get out the top. I believe the chances of your dc falling out the window and dying are greater than you dying in a fire because you have window guards.

[-]I spent the weekend at the beach with 3 wives of DH's friends. We all have kids ranging in age from 10 to 1. Two are SAHM and the other one works part-time. I am the only one who works full time. When the idea was suggested that we all do this, my DH questioned it since one of these ladies irks me to no end. I went anyway. BIG MISTAKE! Apparently, the one who irks me got mad at me because I let my 10YO DS make his own cereal in the morning. He puts everything away, cleans up any spillage and cleans his bowl and spoon when done. By the end of the weekend, some of the other kids were doing it too. She was upset. And she irons her DD's tshirts and if they don't match, she gets upset. Reservations were made at a "nicer" restaurant. T...

ah yep-my DSs would get up, older would make cereal, younger would stand next to him waiting for scraps like a dog, some of the other kids would get up-eat-they would all slather on sunscreen, throw on suits and rashguards and GO!! She would make a "good breakfast" for her daughter-iron her clothes for the beach-then put on suit, then sunscreen, wait an hour, then the matching coverup, then braid her hair ("it blows in her face" as her daughter is screaming she doesn't want it), then go. She yelled at the other mother for bringing cheeseballs-"they are dirty".

what a loooooooong winded post to ask should I invite an irksome woman and her kid to my dc's birthday party. To which I say yes.
[ Reply | Options ]I would say don't invite the woman, except it's sad for the daughter-she'll have enough problems with a mom like that, and probably only ever have friends with exceptionally understanding parents. For her sake, it might be worth including this woman. However, be sure not to let her behavior dictate events. Hang politeness- do exactly what is right for you, and don't let her waste your time.

I loved this -This is great! The government discovered that people will accept FREE money? Hey, then why stop at 2 billion, why not 2 trillion? Then all these people could buy their cars from Government Motors to help them out. Oh but where would they get all the money they would need to borrow? How about the banks we bailed out? They could borrow the money from the government bank and buy the government cars. But wait, who will come up with all this money... I know, we could get it from the 1% who pay 40% of the taxes and everybody can have a new car and have more debt! These guys are brilliant!

[-]If you daughter was like Laci Green, would you be proud of her? This is her:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1ImMtHrrKo&feature=channel_page
9 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]^^*your* This is a real question (not a veiled attempt at anything). I made dh watch it today and he thinks she's using her physique in a way that's harmful, but itd. i think she's cute, smart, ambitious and spunky (even if you don't like her message i don't think you can argue that she isn't). wdyt?
[ Reply | Options ]I would not be proud of her at all. Notice she doesn't mention the charity work that Churchs do, bringing clean water to third world counties, fighting hunger and poverty, and trying desperately to help others not as fortunate. She also doesn't mention that most religions teach good things like not lying, not stealing, not cheating on your spouse. She desperately needs to step inside a Church and do research before she goes shooting off her mouth and talking about stuff without the proper facts. The devil has his hooks in her and all I can say is God help her because she's gonna need it.
[ Reply | Options ]are there missions who do these things w/out requiring that the people they help recognize christ or at least be subjected to relgious teachings? i've always been curious about that. on your other point, morality is not exclusive to religion.
[ Reply | Options ]np: sure. i am not religious, but i'm in public health. in order to work in many foreign countries, religious NGOs have to swear they will keep the religion out of their charity. there are often snafus (imagine the people who volunteer/work for such orgs, and how much they want to proselytize), but for the most part the major orgs are pretty good about NOT subjecting their clients to religious teachings. the idea is that a good deed is a good deed, and hopefully good works will speak well of a religion. smaller orgs are really a mixed bag!
[ Reply | Options ]thanks, i really appreciate your reply. i've always cringed at missions because of the relgious factor. going to help people just for the sake of helping them is one thing, but going to help them expecting them to submit to your ideology is heinous to me. your post made me feel better.
[ Reply | Options ]i was raised catholic and had a pretty bad feeling about organized religion until i began working in public health. i guess growing up, i was confronted by so much of the small-mindedness and judgment. but as an adult i began to get to know a lot of religious people who really devote their lives to helping others with no judgment or agenda, and to see some of the great things about religion (including the catholic church!). many people who are active in such orgs have serious beefs with the leadership in their religions. for example, the pope's ban of condoms is hated by many catholic folks active in public health and ignored a lot of the time. but even while acknowledging the problems with their religion, these people manage to embody ever...

[-]There's a Mom at dd's school who believes in massive social therapy for all children with social deficits. Her own has multiple physical and psycho-social issues which have had the child in therapy for years. She means well at bottom, but there's a thread of small-mindedness when she "encourages" parents to look more deeply at their own children who may have had run-ins with her child. The interesting point is that sometimes she may be on the right track. Still, because she's involved in my dd's class, it's hard to handle her. Thoughts?
