[+]Trying again to ask DC moms: Where is a good place to live in DC or Northern Virginia with two kids that is more urban/city environment and what are the best preschools in these areas?

Outside is definitely suburban, but you could do Bethesda/Chevy Chase or even Tacoma Park (in MD), or Arlington in VA. In DC, Georgetown, Capital Hill are the most "urban" nice areas (lots within walking distance) with kids. A bit more spread out (but probably even nicer with kids) in DC is Woodley or Cleveland Park.

Del Ray is near old town, so I walk there a lot. The one problem with it is that in the 70s they build a bunch of subsidized housing near there. Most of it is great, but some of it can be kind of sketchy.
[ Reply | Options ]I've worked in OT for 4 out of the last 5 years and absolutely love it; big issues there are parking and space if you're in a row house, and there's only one grocery store and a Trader Joe's south of Washington Street. OT is definitely more urban than Del Ray and has much better shopping and a wider selection of restaurants, but Del Ray has more families with young kids if that's important to you.

In Arlington, the Ballston-Rosslyn corridor (the neighborhoods that surround the Orange Line of the Metro) has really come on strong in the past 5+ years, and there are tons of shops, restaurants, etc., as well as good grocery stores and a Whole Foods within walking distance of some really charming neighborhoods (think bungalows, brick colonials, cottages w/big front porches, etc.). If you're considering a move, make sure that you look at your tax rates in DC vs. VA vs. MD - the personal property tax here is exorbitant b/c real estate values are high (like in NYC) and if your'e not renting, it can have a big impact on your bottom line. If big numbers of people, then keep it to a cocktail party for a short period of time in a new restaurant that wants business on off hours. We did that for a christening where we had about 70 people and did the whole thing for $4200

There may be some restaurants, esp. in EV, LES that you could do full dinner and drinks (or at least wine/beer) for that number of people for that price, it just coming up with one with the right space. I would look into Gnocco, L'il Frankies, Cafe Charbon. You might have to go up by about $10 per head though.

[+]My niece is 10 YO and not one of the "nicest" girls I know. I know that is mean to say, but it's true. My brother and SIL have called the school to find out why she doesn't have any friends and was told "she needs to learn to get along with others." Fine, I agree and they are working on this. But they recently bought her a cell phone because she wanted one and to "help her with friends". I'm sorry but I don't get it. And I know it's none of my business except that my brother is very upset by everything. SIL also called some of the mothers to find out why their daughters don't like her daughter. She said none of them called her back. I feel bad but how can you help people who are not making situation better only much worse?

[ Reply | Options ]I'm trying to stay out of it. Like I said, she is not one of the nicest girls I know. I'm very good friends with one of her teachers last year. It was sad to hear that my niece is mean-she's arrogant (well that I knew, I can see it), she pulls other girls hair, stole someone's purse-not nice. I just thought she was just not nice, not a "bully".
[ Reply | Options ]If it's true she did those things, it may very likely be because the girls are being mean to her and she doesn't know how to react. Most likely those girls are the "bullies" and not your niece, but she is acting out because no one is nice to her (including you). She needs to be helped to ignore that and make her own friends.

I actually don't think that the cell phone is going to make things worse -- you don't say that she's spoiled and demanding, just that she's aggressive and doesn't get along with other kids. Parents are trying to help her make friends, which is what she needs. Refusing to get her a cell phone because she's "mean" seems punitive in a counterproductive way.

[ Reply | Options ]Thanks... Bro and his fam live in Denver. We always did big gift exchange growing up, and at some point when we were all adults switched to 2 each to each person with a $$ cap. They weren't here last year and won't be here this year and I've just suggested that we do it when we ARE together, but that running around and finding gifts and paying to ship them is something we can probably all do without (esp. since I am out of work this year and things are tight for them), and we can just do small gifts for each other's kids, and for our Mom.

Yes. Although it is more about furniture building than carpentry. Obviously there is a lot of crossover. Taunton (the publisher) also prints Fine Homebuilding. That is probably a little more carpentry focused. (They also print Fine Cooking which is a very good cooking mag. -- since you like Cook's. (I'm getting a little tired of Cook's lately. They seem to be going more easy and less "best."))

you'll be getting glamour now. the crappiest magazine of all time. the entire issue every month seems to be devoted to page after page after page fashion "do's and don'ts" (complete with black-out bars over the offenders faces), tired sex tips and women of the year (which include rihanna--yeah, standing by your man when he punches your lights out until it makes career sense not to is something we should all aspire to).

new yorker is really all i read regularly. used to check out domino and met home at the benjamin moore store in my nabe, but those are gone; i read ny mag until my subscription lapsed and i sometimes look at dh's ny review of books, harper's and london review of books. people in the check-out line.
[ Reply | Options ]We subscribe to about 20 magazines. There are endless cheap, even free subscriptions out there, so it's not costing us much. We both travel a great deal -- planes is where we do most of our reading. Although I now carry a magazine pretty much all the time and read whenever I have a few minutes, especially when it's not possible to work.

no it's not, it's more 'pop psychology'. lots of pictures and short soundbyte type articles. my fave study from this month was that old people regret stuff that they did not do, while young people regret stuff that they did. another one was that if they took an androgynous face, and made the eyes darker and face whiter, it was perceived as female, and if they did the reverse, it was perceived as male. Made me wear eyeliner for the day..:P

I'm getting a giggle out of the number of people responding with "New Yorker". Please. So few people actually read the New Yorker. And given the general level of, shall we say, enlightenment, and the tenor of most comments here, I find it verrrrrry hard to imagine that this is even close to reflecting reality.

I don't know, I think the New Yorker is really fun. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people read it. I don't read it regularly (I'm not a big magazine person), but I will get a copy at the airport when I have a flight. A lot of people I know read it religiously... I see the well-loved issues in their homes.

oh feh. I've subscribed for years and couldn't live without it. Like many great mags you can read it on different levels--on a busy week, I'll totally skim it, read the cartoons, a poem or two and not much else, but generally I find most of the articles pretty compelling and they're not usually on topics that outdate immediately--I can come back three weeks later and read the massive Packer or Hersh article I missed the week before. I do find virtually all of the current fiction completely befuddling and I used to be a devoted fan.

it's by the america's test kitchen people. they choose a recipe and then try a million different ways to make it, finally settling on the best recipe. it's really fun to read. sometimes i find the recipes turn out a little disappointing--i mean with so much build-up, you expect each one to be the BEST! but it is really interesting to read about what works and what doesn't and why.

[+]I have a SIL-don't we all-that enjoys "lecturing" at all events on all sorts of topics. Childhood obesity (my children are bone thin and eat like elephants), I shouldn't give them the McDonald's first-I should wait (whatever), H1N1 vaccine is harmful to children, etc and so forth. I just let her go and keep my mouth shut because seriously, I don't care what she says. BUT her DCs have NEVER EVER written me a thank you note for anything. My older DC has begun noticing. So one day, I found an etiquette course on line and in the midst of PMS, I had the company forward a brochure to her. The next "event" my niece-not my nephew-wrote me a thank you note. I almost fell over. Okay-so my question is this, when we get the lecture about etiquette...
