[-]I want to share the wonderful experience my family had with the Dream Team - baby sleep consultants! The consultant who worked with our family has her PHD with an additional degree in infant sleep. The knowledge and expertise she provided our family are invaluable. Within 5 nights our son went from waking several times throughout the night to sleeping 12 hours. He wakes up with a big smile on his face and is more well rested now than he ever has been. I highly recommend The Dream Team!

or: while i don't like spam on this site, otoh, it often brings your attention to business just like an ad would. and while i'm not one to try things just bc of spam OR an ad, i do think it's funny that i was half joking about paying someone to sleep train db and low and behold, apparently there IS someone who will do that! don't have the cash to actually pay for someone to do this, but still interesting to me that someone thought of it.

why is it that americans, particularly NYers, are so obsessed with consultants? from college admission consultants to job consultants to corporat consultants? people seem to lack the common sense and can't step up to the plate when making decisions on their own. sometimes, all it takes is to spend a few hrs on research together with your common sense to take your own lead. phds are so overrated..
[ Reply | Options ]LOL What is a degree in infant sleep???? From the University of Sleepology? This is total spam.
[ Reply | Options ]Listen, anytime someone posts about how they wanted to "share the wonderful experience" they had with any company, we all KNOW it's SPAM.

I have my PhD (no add'l degree in infant sleep) and I got my db to sleep 11 hours in two nights. No charge!
[ Reply | Options ]Isn't this a repeat of the SPAM-a-nella from last week? But in the post, the OP was trying to pretend they were an actual mom to a 7 month old baby.

started running again after 2 weeks. i'd exercised all the way through and had a relatively easy natural delivery.
[ Reply | Options ]-
3 weeks. I exercised throughout the entire pregnancy (including the morning I went into labor! eek! didnt know that would happen!!) with my drs ok. I am pretty athletic. big runner. gave up biking during pregnancy, and stopped jogging at about 6 mos and moved indoors to an elliptical. about 30min/day 5 d/wk. post-pg, back on the elliptical as soon as my bleeding slowed. but seriously, were talking 15 minutes at an intensity of "1." just to do something other than nursing, eating, andlying in bed watching law and order reruns.

[-]What age do you recommend for sports for young boys? DS is 2, and I was thinking about soccer, or a multi-sport class. Right now he does gymnastics, and it is fabulous for him, but DH wants him to do more balls sports. Not so sure he's really ready though! Anyone btdt?
13 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]much too early IMO. I mean it's fine if you have money to burn, but it will not provide any actual athletic skills. Just another chance for some socialization, which is fine as long as you know what you are buying. No real benefit of organized sports before 4 or 5yo at the very earliest.
[ Reply | Options ]waaaay too early. Some kids who are active, somewhat coordinated, and fairly mature can handle soccer at 3.5. Many, though, still have trouble at 5.
[ Reply | Options ]Thanks for your advice ladies! We are looking at classes for the Fall, and I just don't think it's worth the money! I'm happy to pay for things I can't give ds at home -- like gymnastics. But we do art and play with balls at home. Practice throwing, kicking, little tykes hoop, even some hockey!

[-]I'm a teacher and was approached by two families about running an after-school "enrichment" class (for their DC). I'm interested in the position - but the offered salary is very, very low (below market-rate - $15/hour) and it wouldn't be "worth" it to me for that fee. What's a polite way to phrase this (and, realistically, how much more can I ask for - $50 is a "fair" rate, but I'm not sure that I can ask for more than 3x the offered pay)?
16 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]Could you say that my going rate is 75 an hour, but maybe if you get a 5 dcs together.....
[ Reply | Options ]-
Something like "that sounds like something I might be interested in, but the going rate for an enrichment class taught by a teacher is $xx/hr for up to x number of DC. If that's something you're interested in, please let me know." Polite, simple and to the point. Just because they're offering you a babysitter's rate to teach their kids doesn't mean that you need to take it.
[ Reply | Options ]We have a teacher that we hired for an enrichment class and we pay her about $55/hour. No, she's not a glorified babysitter. I agree with the above poster in stating what the going rate is. When we were looking though, we had no idea so we asked the teachers what they would ask to teach a class like that (thinking it would be around $20) and were surprised at the cost, but paid regardless, so be nice, but firm.

[-]What do you know about Epiphany Community Nursery School? Would love specific feedback from school parents as well as general reputation. Thanks!
14 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]ECNS is a very nice community. The Director and teachers are very caring. Both my DCs were well prepared for their TT on-going schools.
[ Reply | Options ]Wendy Levy is the director. We are having an average experience. The teachers are good but under Wendy's thumb. She is a dictator who encourages entrance of well intended parents into her revolving fundraising mafia. She rules by fear and bullying. God forbid you become one of her targets. Other nursery directors are much more professional and rise above the gossip Wendy actively enjoys. Wish we had gone to another school and this year is just beginning.
[ Reply | Options ]NP: Can you try to go somewhere else next year? Is she vindictive when it comes time to apply out if you haven't played by her rules?
[ Reply | Options ]I know one family that got a spot late for their daughter but they had already signed the contract w/ECNS. They had a wait list, they claimed, but Wendy completely killed the transfer anyway. This child should be in K, but is doing another year of pre-K because of NSD vindictive nature. Everyone in our class fears finding out, so we do as we're told pretty much...I am an adult and can't believe I am in this situation with the head girls bully from high school...
[ Reply | Options ]
np: I swear, i don't understand people who are having this experience there. we had a terrific 3 years, loved the teachers, think wendy is great. yes, it's very much her school, but i certainly don't find her to be a bully! and lots of families have left wo ill will against them - some only come for the 2s year, others go off to preK at an ongoing school, etc. and we were an unconnected family, who were not in a position to donate $ and we never felt that WL held that against us. ongoing process worked out for us too.
[ Reply | Options ]
Just did a tour there. Nice classrooms and set up, but has this director not heard the main way H1N1 flu is spread is through hands? She stood outside the classroom and shook each child's hand before they entered the room (put on a show for us?) I wanted to offer my hand sanitizer! My friend's upper school sent a letter explaining staff and faculty were curtailing all hand shaking. This woman isn't thinking of these kids basic health. What next? Off my list.
[ Reply | Options ]Parents are nice, nsd is un-professional, abrasive and often, simply inappropriate in large group settings. Most teachers are good, adequate program, some poor judgment (having children paint a glass of wine to represent passover) Good facility, newer than some TT. Writing was on the wall w regard to nsd, why did I choose this school....unpleasant.

[-]i am thinking a good waxing will spice up my sex life--as painful as it is--i think i have to take one for the team--i am hoping it will make me feel sexy (just weaned so hopefully my libido will return)
21 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]-
Just shave it really close or cut w/nail scissors. Much less painful and similar enough result: short hair results in much better oral sex.
[ Reply | Options ]doesn't the short hair give your husband "rug burn" on his face? sort of like making out when he hasn't shaved for a few days?
[ Reply | Options ]
I would go to J.Sisters they do the best wax. It does me feel a lot sexier. Probably because I know I will have a lot more sex. It turns my dh on like you wouldn't believe. The visual, the feel of oral, and intercourse seems to be a lot better for him when I wax.

[-]I can't roll my r's. My 3yo dd can't roll her r's. Do you think she'll eventually be able to? It's not important, but I'm curious.
10 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]Developmentally "r"s are one of the last sounds for a child to produce clearly (along with "l" and "w"), so one would assume that the child would not be able to roll an "r" until after the "r" sound is clear.
[ Reply | Options ]-
BTW: If your child is bilingual (I assume Spanish-English), their sounds and vocabulary will develop a little later than monolingual children. They are usually caught up by the time they are 8 years old (but of course, have the advantage of speaking two languages).

[-]I have been peeing a lot last 2 months - on and off. Also been battling re-occuring bouts of bacterial vaginosis. I went to the urologist today and don't have UTI. he thinks I have an overactive bladder. No I am scared and upset. I know it is not serious but that sucks. I am hoping that this problem is related to the vaginal infection but I just don't know. And why do I keep getting the bacterial infection if I have it again. Plus I suffer from anxiety and this peeing more frequently occurs even more when I am anxious. TIA
4 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]This is UB, so I thought I'd try here. Anyone else's toddler girl get awfully semlly "down there" since potty-training? I asked one pediatrician, and they said this is normal, as pee can get caught.. I plan to ask her primary pediatrician at 4 yo checkup. Anyone else surprised at the odor? Sorry in advance..pretty gross, I know.
[ Reply | Options ]DD is 2 and just training. It took me about an hour the other day to figure out what the smell I was smelling was (assumed it was me since i'm 8 mos preg and pee myself all day long...). Finally caught a whif of her pullup as I was putting her on the potty and it was definitely her. I am now diligently using wipes instead of just toilet paper when she goes to keep her as clean as if I was changing her diaper.

leave around 9/9:15, arrive home 6:45/7. if i can leave work early and squeeze in 45 mins. at the gym on my way home, i do, but either way, i am home by 7. i am OK with this, but DD is still young (18 mos) and, like another poster said above, the weekends are kid-centric, which helps me justify.
[ Reply | Options ]leave at 9, either DH or I are home by 6. Yes, I'm totally happy w this - I have a great job that I am lucky to have, I have time both before and usually after work to play with DS, and have ME time after DS goes to sleep. Honestly this great balance was the reason why we never had a second.

[-]DB is 4, he has language delay (non-English speaking home, taking speech therapy, made huge progress in less than a year), very picky eater, also picky about his clothes, sometimes stacks his trains in a line before he goes to sleep, very communicative, seeks parents attention constantly (sometimes it's so hard to get him to play alone, wants someone to play with him constantly), excellent eye contact, smiles, makes friends to which he refers by name and starts conversation with, like to be read to, puzzles, games, etc. Would you be concerned further?

[-]How to stop certain behavior?? When 2 year old gets frustrated or mad, she says outloud "Hit" and then walks over and smacks the table with her hand. At first we would take her hand and say "no hit, no hit. gentle." and stroke her hand. Then we tried to ignore and walk out of the room. THat isn't working either. If "hit" doesn't get our attention, she sometimes says "kick" and goes and kicks the wall. Have tried the same gentle and ignore approach with that to no avail. Advice? Tips?
7 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]She sounds like she's trying to find a healthy outlet for her anger--at least she's not hitting you or another person. Why don't you redirect her to hit a pillow or something? I think at 2 it's a bit unreasonable to expect them to process their feelings without some kind of physical outlet.
[ Reply | Options ]I agree. Redirect her and teach her to relieve anger some other way. It could be jumping jacks.
[ Reply | Options ]If you have a great kid with a great file, you don't increase your chances by name dropping or letter dropping. We asked this question in an interview at a tt. Actually DH mentioned we knew some current families who knew DC well and would it be worthwhile to have them send a letter? DOA said DC's file would stand or fall on its own. DOA said letters were helpful for older applicants where the recommendation letters came from coaches/teachers.
[ Reply | Options ]-
I think it sounds just fine. She sounds like a smart little girl! Instead of hitting a person, she is taking out her aggression in a way that hurts nobody. I think the pillow redirection could be good--you can direct her to outlets you find more acceptable. But she may just need to physically hit or kick something and at this age I think it is OK!

really? u think it's ok? i know im over thinking it but just want to make sure it all works. which salad would you prefer? any thoughts on different sides to make in place of what i have? tx so much
[ Reply | Options ]It really sounds delish. My personal preference would be the pear dressing. those carmelized shallots sound great. not sure how much time you have but this cake from epicurious looks dynamite. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Devils-Food-Cake-with-Peppermint-Frosting-350770. i'd check their dessert section--i'm sure there are some easy options. depending on how many people are coming, maybe fried apple pies? they can be made to look very delicate and they are VERY good. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Fried-Apple-Pies-241208
[ Reply | Options ]The idea of frying anything for a dinner party sounds so stressful unless you have kitchen help. I'd go for a really delicious cake--chocolate, ginger, lemon--that you can make or buy beforehand so you can just whip it out at the end.
[ Reply | Options ]Very true. I agree actually. I think I was just dreaming of something fried when I posted that. You could also easily tone down that chocolate cake recipe to make it easier, or even buy one. I think the chimichurri will mix well with the roast. Did you have another option in mind?
