[-]Anyone pay for 3D ultrasound to get a better look at baby? With my daughter (2.5 years ago) we were given it automatically with our anatomy scan, this time around at same hospital they only did 2d and acted surprised that we got it before. And the tech wouldn't let me see the screen at all, just the blurry tv. So I'd love to have 3D done somewhere, just not sure where to find it.

You're welcome. Try Dr. Google sometime. Don't expect everyone to jump all over themselves.
[ Reply | Options ]wow. I did and had trouble finding anything in the city. Obviously this ultrasound would just be for fun. Posted here because there are better NYC specific info, plus recommendations. but you know that.

NEED A GREAT NANNY? I'm going PT at work, so I'm trying to find my wonderful nanny a FT position. She's been with us FT since my son was 3 weeks old, for over a year and a half. She is professional, with over 7+ years of experience caring for children. Sherry is loving (very tender and kind and great with babies and kids), responsible (always punctual, reliable. My son has health issues, and I completely trust him in her hands), extremely neat (does light housecleaning, laundry, and always has my place immaculate), flexible (works evenings and weekends upon request; goes out of her way to accommodate my schedule). If you are interested in learning more about her, please email me at miacara5 at gmail dot com or call 917 284 8503.

[-]3 year-old DC has a hard time participating in soccer class. He either runs around or comes running back to me. Any thoughts on how to get him more with the program? He doesn't have this prob. with school. Doing great at school and seems to follow teacher direction well. Any thoughts? I had also taken him to a Music Together class and the same thing happened. I got so tired of chasing after him that I stopped going. Am a bit thrustrated spending money on classes and watching him not participate. Any input most appreciated.
10 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]He's 3. Why is it so important to you that he do soccer or music? He's already in preschool and doing well there. That's enough for this age.
[ Reply | Options ]-
This is totally typical of 3 yos. The ones who you feel like are always participating have either taken soccer already or are just into it for this session. They can bounce all over in their desire to participate. Just keep going because you paid and some days dc will play and some days they won't.
[ Reply | Options ]Two options: 1) decide he's too young for it and hold off for 6 months or a year. If that doesn't work, then 2) don't watch. I tell my son that if he can't do it without me, then I need to leave and I stand outside the classroom after handing him off to the instructor. It's worked wonders and now I can watch again.
[ Reply | Options ]This is quite typical of 3 y.o. boys. Short attention span, distractable. If he's enjoying himself during these classes, I think it's still money well-spent.
[ Reply | Options ]Thanks for the advice. He does seem to enjoy himself whether he's running around or sitting out with me and watching. Always seems to make it back in time for the last goal and stickers. The coaches don't seem to mind that he's running around and they've been very good at trying to redirect him.
[ Reply | Options ]
I don't think any 3yo will particpate for the whole class. My ds took soccer at 3 and the kids were lying down in the middle of the game, wandering off to play together, etc. It's more, IMO, for the social experience and exposure to team play than anything else. If he's not engaging at all then maybe you should wait, but if he's just taking a break every once in awhile, then I think that is normal and expected.

7 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]That isn't how it went. Spence was the mistress, Chapin the wife and Brearley the doctor. If you are going to be stupid get it right

Actually, if want your girl to produce trashy TV reality shows that embarrass the youth, go to Brearley. If you don't want your girls to participate in those shows, send them to Spence or Chapin.

tupperware and wooden spoons. they play with them and when they outgrow it you can use them in the kitchen
[ Reply | Options ]So many developmental milestones were hit on the TinyLove Gymini playmat-from 5 weeks-5 mos. Also, those stripey sox w/colorful plush additions on tops of the feet are pretty great. Lamaze makes those. The Ikea folding cloth, plush animals, soft barn is such a great toy to have through the stages and will be around for at least 2 years. HABA does fun, wooden, pull back toys which will be vey engaging and encourage movement and hand-eye.

I see that most folks on this board go public even when they could "afford" private.
[ Reply | Options ]-
I know many people who earn over 500K a year and never applied to private. Just went to their zoned public. Not interested in the craziness
[ Reply | Options ]odds are they live in a zone where the public school is a good option, so they don't need to go through the craziness. if they lived elsewhere they might have made a different decision.
[ Reply | Options ]-
This is NYC, neighborhoods still run block to block in some places - parts of CPW, Riverside and WEA are not zoned for "great" public schools, yet this is generally very high income housing. Most families living in the El Dorado and The Ardsley (CPW, low 90s) do not send their DCs to PS84 - they are in G&T or private.

[-]What is the right etiquette here: A friend/acquaintence recently lost a baby at birth. The baby was full term, delivered and died of complications a day later. Is it right to send condolence card/flowers right away; wait a bit and send a basket of some sort with a thinking of you type of card; or don't do anything.
10 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]Send something with a card asking her to contact you if there is anything she needs.
[ Reply | Options ]-
Send something now and send something later. Whatever you do, DO NOT ask her if there is anything she needs. Those are empty words. Just do something for her. Make food. Order a cleaning service, something. Now I would send a card and gift...later, in a month or so, would make a gesture like food/cleaning.

[-]My dd eats so SLOW, I swear (she's 2). This morning I gave her eggs and a nutri-grain bar and it took over an hour. Then for lunch whole wheat toast with peanut butter and a banana and that took over an hour. Now for dinner, veggie chicken nuggets (not vegetarian), whole wheat mac and cheese, and corn and it's been over an hour. I don't know why it takes her so long to eat. I see other kids just shoveling food in. She doesn't hardly ever snack or fill up on juice, just a really slow eater.
7 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]my 2.4yo dd is the same way. i feel like it's a waste of time that she could spend playing or doing something more fun, but she doesn't seem to mind. plus it's perfect at restaurants -- she'll happily continue eating until after we've paid the check and are ready to go. overall i think it's a good thing!
[ Reply | Options ]it sounds like a lot of food for a little 2 yo kid. i'm pretty small framed, and i would get really full if i ate eggs and a nutrigrain bar at once. i get full if i eat a banana for a snack. my 10 yo cousin has about the same appetite. However, our total calories consumed is the same, just spaced. I would reduce the amount of food given at each meal and then let her snack as she wishes.
[ Reply | Options ]OK, to OP - now that we see these posts are both from you, I would definitly have a consult with a specialist about this. What can it hurt? She has some disordered habits which seem to be effecting her weight. It's so much easier to intervene now rather than later when she is older. GL.

[-]i am having my first miscarriage. i am going in for a d&c next monday. this pregnancy was the result of ivf (my second cycle) so i have missed a good amount of work for my egg retrieval, transfer adn all the monitoring. my boss hasnt asked any questions and has been totally accomodating. i havent told her what is going on, but thinking that maybe i should just to not seem like i am taking advantage... thougths?
20 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]-
I would tell her that you need Monday off b/c you have a doctor's appointment. It's direct but if she asks why you need the whole day off you might have to tell her. Maybe you could also send her an e-mail and tell her that way, if it would be to emotional for you to do it in person. Tell her also that you appreciate how accommodating she has been through all of this before you tell her that you need the day off.
[ Reply | Options ]Sorry! It is a bit awkward. I would just say it is a procedure related to IVF. Offer to work some time this weekend to make up for missed time. I would rather that than feel that boss is too intimate with my life. It makes them think less of you.
[ Reply | Options ]she doesnt know that i am goingthrough ivf now either (i just returned from maternity leave earlier this year too)
[ Reply | Options ]Could you just call in with suspected flu? Naughty, but the perfect excuse at the moment.
[ Reply | Options ]thats probably what i am going to do. i just feel badly about all the work i am missing - preschool application process, doc appts for 15yo DS, ivf monitoring.... it just feels like i am taking advantage...
[ Reply | Options ]Maybe offer to do a couple of hours extra here and there, or finish up something at the weekends? Boss will appreciate acknowledgement of their flexibility.
[ Reply | Options ]I would even take Monday and Tuesday, get doctor to write a note saying you should not return to work until wednesday..rest up, and get ready for another round. I have started arranging doctors visits at weekends, and some pks do weekend visits too...it is a fulltime job doing the pk thing, as well as working, and not feeling well. Look after yourself..GL

It depends on your relationship with your boss. I told mine when I had a miscarriage since I had to miss work. We weren't close, but his wife had had a few mcs and he was extremely understanding. I think it's better to explain that you are having a miscarriage than say "it's a procedure related to IVF" and most people will be very understanding. Unless you think your boss will have an issue with you becoming pregnant, I think telling her the truth is best in this case.
[ Reply | Options ]How would your boss react if she knew that you are trying to get pregnant? Is your office environment supportive of pregnant women and moms? If so, I think I would tell her because you have will likely try IVF again (right?) and it will just be easier to have it out there. But only you can know what is best for your situation. Sorry about the mc. My heart goes out to you.

[-]I just turned 41 and I am 10 pounds heavier than I've ever been. I spent a year on zoloft and went off it about 3 months ago. I'm wondering if other women have gained weight from zoloft or from approaching your 40's. I'm trying to determine if I can really get rid of it or should just accept. I've been naturally very thin my whole life and this is a big change for me. Thanks.
15 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]YES to the extra 10-15 pounds in the past 2 years (just turned 40). Was 130; now 145 (ugh!). I'm happiest at 133-135. No medication was involved.
[ Reply | Options ]Yes, many antidepressants can cause you to gain weight. I ended up gaining about 25 pounds in my early 20's b/c I was on antidepressants. I was very thin before and had never had trouble, however, ever since it has been a losing battle to get back to the weight I was.
[ Reply | Options ]happened to me but then I took a look at my eating habits, which had always been great and slipped over time, and my lack a sleep. Made a few small changes and the went back to my old weight. Not dieting, just stuff like making sure I had a couple servings of fruit a day.
[ Reply | Options ]i have a theory that as we age, our ovaries produce less estrogen so our bodies slowly add on more fat,to make up for the loss of estrogen (fat is hormonally active and causes increased estrogen). it makes sense..after all, fat guys have higher circulating estrogen than slim ones. if you've been very thin, 10 lbs isn't a big deal at all and hey, it's a lot cheaper than juvederm as a wrinkle filler. :) and also, you came off of zoloft which is awesome. i hope you can enjoy your amazing body which is letting you type without pain, read the screen, etc and not worry too much about a few pounds.
[ Reply | Options ]I'm not sure if it's the meds or the age. I went on Lexapro for just 6 months and gained 7 pounds. I was 41 at the time (43 now). I've always been slim and 7 pounds is very uncomfortable for me. I've been unable to lose it. It's so hard. Good luck!
[ Reply | Options ]OP - it is confusing. I also had a baby at 38 so for a while I thought that was the problem. Have you tried to lose the weight?
[ Reply | Options ]Yes, desperately and I cannot drop an ounce. I exercise at least an hour a day and am a healthy eater. I'm not trying to discourage you at all, but I would probably have to eat about 600 calories a day to lose it and I just can't do it. Maybe you will lose it though. I was also 38 when I had my DD, but I lost the baby weight right away. Ugh. This sucks.
