[-]As a mom of a soon to be kindergartener who really despises the likes of Hannah Montana and its progeny, what is out there for tween girls, (books, movies, tv shows) that celebrates their age for what it is and does not encourage them to date early, etc. Anything? Thinking ahead regarding this time with my dd and I am just wondering what role models there are for her that dont just push them too fast into teen/adult lifestyles.

hannah will be gon by the time your 5 year old cares in a few years- they'll be something else
[ Reply | Options ]I hate to say it but five year olds care about Hannah Montana. My dc was introduced to her by a preK classmate & it bugs the sh*t out of me. I agree with op that it is inappropriate and we do not allow it in our house but there is only so much you can do - they have play dates & talk during recess.
[ Reply | Options ]OP: dd always preferred interested in animals, but by the same token totally got into the princess fairy tales. seems like there is a market for something more age appropriate for tween girls...a hermione like character, for lack of a better example, who is the main character who has adventures (and not someone who is just about makeup, clothes, and boys).

my thought exactly....that's why I am asking, is there something out there that is the anti-Britney or Hannah. There should be! Nancy Drew is sort of dated, is there a more modern Nancy Drew?
[ Reply | Options ]only problem with old nancy drew is that she and her gf's didn't go to college even though they were highly intelligent/wealthy. i get that college isn't for everyone, but she was so obviously just waiting for ned to graduate. moving past that, there are "modern" versions of nancy drew. just hit a bookstore/library. also modern versions of bobbsey twins.

There's a series of books that my daughter adored when she was around 10: Sammy Keyes is the main character. She solves mysteries--kind of an updated Nancy Drew. Author is Wendelin Van Draanen.

Disney is bad about this. My tween loves "Ned's Declassified." And all things Animal Planet, Discovery channel etc. She likes Hannah Montanna too but I only allow the music and she saw the movie with a friend. The thing is to find other things that are good - most kids get the difference between good writing etc. and crap.
[ Reply | Options ]I loved the Hardy Boys. Books and the TV show. Parker Stevenson was so dreamy. LOL. Maybe get her tween books which are a bit "gender-inclusive". I happen to like that show, That's So Raven. I started watching it when my boys were tweens. From raising 3 boys, I find that while they don't like the Hannah Montana stuff, they do like shows where the girl is "doing stuff" like solving a mystery or good at a sport. Especially if she can fight. LOL. When my boys got older, they loved Buffy The Vampire Slayer. So for a mother of boys maybe steer her towards shows, books, and movies where the girl is doing something more than singing and dancing and looking pretty. I have nothing against Disney. But I noticed my boys had two favorite Disney movies....

American Girl dolls are an alternative. They at least are focused on a time period or culture instead of pop culture crap. My dd got one when she was 6, and we read the books aloud together. She now reads them to herself and watches the movies. My dd is now going on 9, and my advice to you is to keep her away from the Disney/Nick shows. I just got rid of our cable, because she was addicted to Hannah, Zack & Cody, & ICarly. The quality of our family life has improved immensely, though I do miss In Treatment and my CNN. Just say NO to TV.

[-]Do you let your teenager's boyfriend/girlfriend sleep over in your kid's room if you knew they were having sex?

NP: what do you do with a teen that has no interest in doing anything but hang around the house all day with boyfriend, does no chores, demands to be cooked meals, and only wants for herself and boyfriend>
[ Reply | Options ]Yes, I do actually. I am not going to "ban" them from having sex. I think it is a tough situation though. On the one hand, my DC and her bf are both responsible, polite, get good grades, etc. That is NOT to say that "having sex" is a privilege. But what it means for me is, they are going to be having sex anyway, they are aware of the importance of safe sex, and I would so much rather them be doing this than who knows what else.
[ Reply | Options ]I a pretty liberal, even when it comes to sex and teenagers BUT I would never let a boyfriend or girlfriend sleep over in the same bedroom or on the same floor. Maybe the couch if they were escaping a bad home life situation.

[-]Why don't more multi-cultural parents send their kids to camps with water based activities? CampCaribe.com will be taking 8 diverse tween girls on a learning adventure program to St. John in the US Virgin Islands for Spring Break 2010 in an effort to begin to change the demographic of camps that take place around water. Have you ever sent you child to water camp?

[-]Want to bring my three dd to new orleans. any suggestions on what to do, where to stay, etc? TIA
11 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]If you want a nice OLD hotel you could try Le Pavillion. One fun thing is they serve hot chocolate and peanut butter sandwiches in the lobby every night at 10PM. Rooms are wonderful (very characteristic of old time New Orleans). I went in Jan with kids and did a swamp tour (very fun), handsome cab ride through French Quarter, shopping and eating. I would say to make sure you see the Bayou and make sure you do a few things in the French Quarter for sure.
[ Reply | Options ]Go to Preservation Hall to hear music; beignet at the Cafe du Monde (and elsewhere); eat red beans and rice on Monday. I still remember being taken to the Court of Two Sisters when I was a teenager a long time ago. I love the Canal Street Ferry--you can just take it across the river to Algiers, eat and go back. It gives you a sense of the river. When would you be going?

[-]Any avid eBay users out there? I have three pieces of Waterford crystal in mint condition and want to sell them. Not sure what the best method is but assumed eBay would be a good start. I've never sold anything on eBay and am wondering if I should charge extra for shipping (they're heavy bowls) or stipulate a price I won't go below. They're worth about $295 each. TIA!
