  • [-]Anyone ever have an endometrial biopsy? Was it painful? If you've had an HSG, how did it compare pain-wise to that? TIA

    • I thought less than HSG, but frankly we were so much further down the road that my pain evaluation might have all been relative.

    • omg - I had one - do NOT - I repeat - do NOT let your regular gyne do it...go to a fertility specialist ASAP b/c they have far more refined instruments. My gyne used primeval instrument of torture (and this was a WOMAN!) to do it - this little metal scraper thingie and I went into a full body sweat/shakes after...so painful. When I ultimately went to feritility specialist, they said, Oh...we have much less painful way of doing this....urgh!!!!!!

      • Oops...sorry.. I see you have already has HSG, so must already be seeing a fertility specialist...in any event, I would demand to be shown the instrument they plan to use and request some sort of anasthesia.

      • OP: It will be done by my RE at Cornell. I think they use a suction instrument as opposed to a knife. Sorry about your experience--sounds awful!

    • I recently had one with my ob/gyn and it was no big deal. just some mild cramping afterwards. I don't know what an HSG is so I can't compare.

    • Have had two. You lie down, a thin catheter is inserted. A dye is dispersed. The thin catheter is taken out. You go home. I took two tylenols beforehand. The pain was a very very sharp menstural cramp. I turned beet red. Some spotting immediately after and no pain followed.

    • I think the anticipation of this purportedly uncomfortable procedure was worse than the actual HSG. The only truly painful part is at the very end of the dye dispersion but it honestly lasts about 4 seconds. Like others, it feel like a very acute menstrual cramp. Felt fine afterwards and think you should manage well with a couple of Tylenol before (and after if you feel like it). Good luck!

          • Maybe it is most painful for women where they actually find blockage? Also, everyone has vastly different pain thresholds so what some people fine to be no big deal could be crippling to others

    • Breathe through it. It hurt a bit, but not terrible. Honestly, I had more pain during/ after my first iui than I did from the HSG

    • Don't want to scare you but mine was painful -- apparently my cervix is very high and strangely angled and they couldn't get the tube in at first. This part really hurt but supposedly it was unusual, the nurse said she's never seen it take so long. Once it was in, it was okay -- the dye feels like menstrual cramps when it goes through your tubes but it's manageable. I would advise taking a strong painkiller first. Like if you have anything left over from wisdom teeth or anything -- take it. Once the test was over I felt fine, though.

    • You may want your husband to there since you are in this together. Also, the problem may not be with you. I suspect your first appt will entail a lengthy consult, ultrasound and a lot of blood tests. Good Luck.

      • NP you should get your dates together -- stuff like last period, any pregnancy or m/c info (including dates), any allergies, meds you are on or have been on, any health problems, etc., if you were on the pill, etc. Just a general health overview. You will probably give blood and maybe have an exam? Call the office and ask if your dr wants your dh there this time, or whether he could come in another time for any bloodwork.

    • Our first appt was very much focused on both of us- his medical history, medications, etc. as much as mine. After all, it is equally likely that the problem will be a male factor as a female factor.

    • Expect lots of questions about medical history and probably a pelvic exam w/probe to look at your uterus and ovaries. For other tests, including sperm analysis, bloodwork and examination of tubes you will probably need to make separate appointments. Would recommend that dh goes with you for reasons others have mentioned. Good luck! I'm going through the same thing.

    • I just went to one (Spandorfer at Cornell) for the first time last week. Went without DH, which was perfectly fine. They asked questions about DH though (his medications, age, family history). And DH's going in to give a sample next week. For me, he talked with me in his office for a little bit, then did a breast exam, took some swabs, and did an internal ultrasound. Then they drew a lot of blood (so eat something before you go in). Then they scheduled me to go in and give more blood on the 2nd or 3rd day of my period. And they scheduled me for an HSG (which I'm doing this afternoon).

    • I would heartily recommend Dr. Milton Hutson at Cornell. When I first learned I was pregnant, I interviewed one other practice before I ended up with Hutson. The thing that immediately impressed me was that prior to going in for my first visit, Hutson's office sent a questionnaire that was about 8 pages long, on scan-tron sheet, and I was told to bring it to my first appointment. They scanned it, and withing minutes, they were able to see any items in my history that would raise a red flag (having a cat, for instance). When my husband and I sat down with him, he spent what seemed like a huge amount of time asking us questions, and giving us the oportunity to ask him questions without rushing us (we were probably in there over an hour ju...

      • Dr Hutson is great but he does not accept insurance, i would like to recommend Dr Daniel Roshan, despite that he is busy, he is very compitent and skilful, all the procedures and sonograms are done in the same office, the staff are wonderful. I had a triplet pregnancy that went well, delivered at 36 weeks with alot of wonderful and thoghtful care. Forever i am greatful for this gift.

      • I just had a baby delivered by Dr. Hutson. He's terrific. I highly recommend him. No he does not take insurance but my insurance is reimbursing about 70% of the costs incurred by his care. To be honest, the best docs dont take insurance -- sad but true -- so if you can afford to carry the costs till your insurance can reimburse you most of what you lay out, by all means do it.

    • Kalish--I have a really high risk multiple pregnancy--my and my db's life were in danger--and we are all healthy and have recovered well. But she acted very quickly when things were critical, got me into the hospital, monitored by the top md's in the necessary depts and delivered my db's at exactly the right moment. She's truly an amazing doctor.

    • DR. DANIEL ROSHAN FACOG, FACS is absolutely, hands down, the very vest high risk, maternal-fetal medicine obstetrician in New York City. He is caring, sensitive and brilliant. He has a terrific bed-side manner and takes time to listen, something so few doctors do. He is incredibly thorough, and all sonograms can be done right in the office. The staff is very warm and friendly. Dr. Roshan can handle even the most difficult pregnancies, multiple pregnancies and is quick to identify any fetal abnormalities. I would chose him again and again.

    • I have mixed feelings about his practice. I went to him for a second opinion. He suggests IVF but is willing to try IUI. Since he didn't take my insurance (PHCS) I was resistant about the IVF costs. In January we're switching to my husband's insurance, Blue Cross, which he takes and I think I will go for IVF with Dr. Keltz. but we just found out starting January 2010 that he takes my husband's insurance so we're enrolling in it effective January 2010 so we have to be patient, 2 more months to go. I think he's OK. The front desk is awful

      • Don't know what i did but my post went up before i could edit it. In any case. I think Dr. Keltz is OK. He's positive and seems knowledgeable. I think the office staffis rude. They're very busy and always have an attitude like you're bothering them. I haven't really dealt with the nurses yet but they seem nice enough. He's usually late and kind of rushes you so you have to be ready with your questions. I write them down so i don't get flustered. I will probably go with him for my first IVF.

    • Not a fan of Keltz. Nothing specific, he was just kind of odd an awkward. His partner, Daniel Stein, is lovely and knowledgable. Granted I am biased with a 5 month old dd from 1st IUI ! Front office staff are pretty much the same everywhere and are not going to get you pregnant. GL.

    • I was with Keltz from March of this year through September. Did all my testing w/ him, 3 IUIs w/ injectables, laparoscopic surgery for endo, and one failed IVF. I just switched to Cornell for my next IVF. I too have mixed feelings about Keltz. I don't blame him for not getting me pg., b/c honestly I'm a tough case and even at Cornell I think my odds will be pretty slim. Keltz is a nice man and I think he knows what he's doing, but it's true that appointments feel rushed and he doesn't explain much unless you ask specific questions. Also, wait times can be really long. For the morning monitoring appointments, I recommend getting there before 7 AM.

        • Between the two of them, I don't think it would even make much of a difference. You will be seeing both of them regardless (as well as the new guy, Lederman), b/c they alternate mornings for monitoring and IUIs.I had long waits regardless of who was on duty. And as far as which one is a better doctor, I really don't know.

            • As far as I know, this is standard at every practice. They do monitoring and IUIs very early in the morning, and the doctors take turns (though of course your protocol is determined by your doctor). I am now starting at Cornell, and I've heard it's the same there.
