[-]I posted before about pulling ds out of preschool. Since then we've found a school for him to go a few days a week and have started some OT etc. He's very active and does well when he's doing a lot. Is it too much to have him in 3 different sports classes (swimming, soccer etc.) plus the few hours a day at the preschool and OT?

[-]Greeting all (attempt #2...) I need some advice! I've been a Special Ed teacher and Behavior Coach for 20 years. I LOVE what I do and seem to be pretty good at it (please tolerate my bragging and let me say I was given two awards for outstanding service) Anyway, lately I have found myself more and more upset at the entire public school system (I could rant for hours...) But had one particularly bad situation where I REALLY let a student down (she really needed to talk to me, and being overwhelmed (200 students a day, meetings, parents calling, paperwork,) I forgot all about our meeting and left for the day. Without going into details, she had a very serious issue to deal with, and trusted me enough to ask for help. I'm having a hard time ge...

[-]DB is 4, he has language delay (non-English speaking home, taking speech therapy, made huge progress in less than a year), very picky eater, also picky about his clothes, sometimes stacks his trains in a line before he goes to sleep, very communicative, seeks parents attention constantly (sometimes it's so hard to get him to play alone, wants someone to play with him constantly), excellent eye contact, smiles, makes friends to which he refers by name and starts conversation with, like to be read to, puzzles, games, etc. Would you be concerned further?

[-]Can a child have receptive language disorder without being autistic?
5 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]-
DD was exposed to 2 languages, and could not make a sense of it. We're givign her speech therapy classes and she seems to catch up. She's very social, loving, has friends, just language delayed. Teacher pushes for evaluation, but speech therapist says nothing more is required. I can't see her beign autistic.
[ Reply | Options ]I had preemie twins exposed to several languages. Receptive/expressive delays. Pushed repeatedly for evaluations but resisted. Hired private speech therapist who said nothing more was required. Thank God every day that I listened to the ST because they caught up in one year (switched to all English, etc.)

That will go away in NO TIME. I had a MARKED receptive/expressive delay (3-4 languages at home) and that was gone in a year or so. :)

Honestly, I don't really know the cause. I will tell you I was SCARED and it was the longest year. If I had to guess, I really think your daughter will catch up before 3. I got the speech therapy and was glad I did, because it made me feel that I was "doing something" but I am not certain it wouldn't have gone away on its own. And it was RECEPTIVE too- which was far more terrifying.

Our bilingual dd had a slight delay on a monolingual scale, but on a multilingual scale, she was in the norm. If your child is bilingual, be sure that the speech therapist knows how to handle this:)

oops, got cut off. our child is 2 and a half and doesn't talk much either. he is growing up multi-lingually and we have an appointment to see the a speech therapist. my gut feeling is that he is fine because he is obviously very smart and his receptive language in any language is strong. however, as parents we worry because compared to other kids, he is obviously behind. this is a really difficult murky area when kids differ so much in their skills.

[-]First post on this site, please excuse my lack of familiarity with the lingo here. Returning to New York City in a few weeks after several years away (in midwest and south). Left married and childless. Returning divorced, with a 3 year old (almost 4 year old) son who is on the spectrum. Any recommendations for a pediatrician on the Upper West Side? Or for a developmental pediatrician/pediatric neurologist etc.? Thanks in advance!

[-]15 mo dd has no words. Ped will follow up in 2 mos. In meantime what can I do to promote language? What exercises does EI give?
7 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]Read to her and get some of those "Baby's First Words" books -- it might help her to see the pictures and hear you say the words simultaneously. Also, if you have an iphone, there is an app that is like a Baby's First Words book. It's called iTot cards, I believe. If nothing else, it helps them get through subway trips, long lines, restaurant meals, etc.
[ Reply | Options ]I would call EI now. It may take a while for them to find someone to do an eval and then months to get services started. No words at 15mos is meaningful. Not saying the end of the world, but I would get things started. I also would have hearning tested. Signed BTDT mom.
[ Reply | Options ]Does she understand various words? Does she babble with inflection and different sounds? If so, I wouldn't be concerned yet. My DS is 16 months and he has only a few words that he doesn't say clearly. He understands a lot and can follow basic instructions. I'm really not worried based on this.

[-]Does anyone have have experience with the Hallowell Center (for ADHD)? Thinking of having my 7 yo evaluated there. He had a neuropsych last year but he was "borderline" for ADHD. He's having major adjustment issues in first grade now, and I want to get some additional advice/services on board to try and support him and/or help us find an appropriate school setting. Thx.
14 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]Have you had his eyes checked by a developmental optomotrist Like Andrea Thau in Nyc?
[ Reply | Options ]No. Haven't thought to do this. Can eye issues look like ADHD? Right now he's having trouble focusing but also engages in a fair bit of disruptive behavior.
[ Reply | Options ]Yes, yes, yes! Vision problems can mimic ADHD. Get his eyes checked by an eye doctor who is trained in developmental optometrics. I will post a link with some info. Are you in NYC?
[ Reply | Options ]this website has a lot of info about different vision problems. http://www.visiontherapystories.org/add_adhd_drug_free.html

We see Fran Reinstein in Andrea Thau's office. An amazing transformation in attention and focus. Interactive metronome really helped us, as well. We saw Vanessa Giardia at Createabilities OT.
[ Reply | Options ]Poster above is not OR, I am, but we also see fran reinstein in dr. Thau's office and have had results nothing short of miraculous.
[ Reply | Options ]That's great to hear. Certainly worth looking into. I'm so cynical at this point, though. Do you think they'd tell me if my ds did not have any optometric issuse? I'm reluctant to get him involved in more therapy if he doesn't truly need it. I guess we can go and see what they say. Thanks again.
[ Reply | Options ]I would hope that if there was no issue they would not have you do anything. They go through a lot of tests before they give you a diagnosis. I have to admit, I was totally feeling like it was BS, vision therapy, then we started it because during the exams I saw how my child was behaving with certain visual stimuli and i could see she had a major problem. If you have vision insurance they might pay and our health insurance picks up some of the cost of therapy. But I can say it's been priceless.

[-]Just wondering if anyone on here has a very active 5 year old. My ds is on the verge of turning 5. Always been very active and I just find him exhausting when we need to go somewhere in the city using mass transit. He's very impulsive so I need to hold his hand most of the time. Any advice?
5 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]I would think that "very active" and "impulsive" are part of the working definition of a 5 yo boy. Holding hands most of the time is part of a mom's arsenal. You can start teaching him some independence by letting go of his hand briefly and making sure he stops and waits for you once or twice in a walk. Make that a privelige he wants and he may start to reign himself in a bit.

ITA. The way I taught my ds at age 3 independence & listening skills was to play "red light, green light". Green light - he gets to skip ahead til I say red light; at 'red' he has to wait until I catch up and tap him on the head. It works and it's fun and even now at 5 we play it.

[-]Anyone on whose child gets Orton-Gillingham reading help? Can you please give me some idea of how much these sessions cost? I'm a little freaked out. Also, does 100 hours of treatment sound right? TIA
1 reply [ Reply | Watch | Options ]You can do that system at home. It isn't that hard to learn how. I went to a free seminar at our public library given by the woman who runs a company and uses the system and then I bought the package - maybe 90.00?? It was easy. I like the system btw. The ladies name was Emily Levine (sp?)
