[-]A preschool called to schedule an interview. I did not take the first date offer which was a week away but instead scheduled one a month away on a day that is more convenient for me. Now I feel bad that the later interview date may hurt DC's chance. Does it really matter?

i took the latest interview dates i could get at the schools i was most interested in--i figured by then dd would have more practice at the play visits (or if it were just an interview for me, i'd have a better sense of what i wanted to ask, etc.). it worked out great and dd was accepted by 7 schools. so don't sweat it, it can work out for the best.

[-]erb question: if a school does not require the erb (example PK Fieldston) but says it would welcome any materials, would you send a copy of your report, or have the ERB send it directly? Also, which is the minimum score would you send (if not mandatory)? thanks

promotion, new job, you're moving to Paris, won the lottery...good luck. if he wants to meet you out it cant be bad news; he would do that at home so you could scream/cry in private.

There is a mine in NJ my dc are dying to go to where you actually can go in sift and mine some rocks yourself. But my dc are really into rocks and gems. Also, Land of Make Believe in Hope, NJ esp with Xmas approaching; Skytop Lodge is fun and in the Poconos too. Philly, Boston, DC are fun overnight city trips.

[-]i got an email from Obama-I donated and now I get email updates from his people--the subject line was Sarah Palin and they used the word liar and the word dangerous--so a few things--fear mongering as a tatic to get the dems in line--i don't condone it, second of all-the more you keep talking about Palin the more of a threat she will become and third I would really rather the president talk about the merits of the programs instead of his people using this as a tactic. I think it lacks courage.
33 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]I don't believe for a second that was an official email. Why don't you post that email here?
[ Reply | Options ]Right now, Sarah Palin is on a highly publicized, nationwide book tour, attacking President Obama and his plan for health reform at every turn. It's dangerous. Remember, this is the person who coined the term "Death Panels" -- and opened the flood gates for months of false attacks by special interests and partisan extremists. Whatever lie comes next will be widely covered by the media, then constantly echoed by right-wing attack groups and others who are trying to defeat reform. As we approach the final sprint on health reform, we can't afford more deception and delay. We need to be ready for anything -- and have the resources to respond with ads, events, and calls to Congress when the attacks come. So we're setting a big goal:...

np: I believe you but everything in the e-mail you received is 100% accurate, unlike the words coming out of Palin's mouth. I get annoyed that the dnc keeps asking for money, but I like that they are truthful in their e-mails, unlike the ones from the RNC.
[ Reply | Options ]OR: Sorry, i stepped away. I do believe you now--but from what you had said, I expected a different sort of email entirely. I don't believe that is fear mongering. Unfortunately, I think the misinformation they are referring to--the "death panels" and false characterization of what is in the bills--is dangerous. I certainly think that the president should focus on the merits of proposed programs, but when blatant lies are being bandied about--and spread in the national media, by those who should know better--I agree that those lies must be addressed.

id on't see anything wrong with calling her a liar or dangerous, nor with taking her seriously since she's clearly priming herself for a run in 2012. worse would be to brush her off as a harmless annoyance imo.
[ Reply | Options ]it is petty and beneath the dignity of the president, whether it is done by his office or his proxies.
[ Reply | Options ]but it's not beneath the dignity of someone clearly running for president to call the president a liar and dangerous?
[ Reply | Options ]you evaluate the merits of a candidate and how they act is absolutely worthy of consideration. Once in office, however, you should comport yourself with the dignity afforded the office.
[ Reply | Options ]-
palin was still in office when she made up the death panel lies. or is the office of governor not afforded any dignity?
[ Reply | Options ]I don't know whether she was or wasn't, as I do my best to pretend she doesn't matter. Nevertheless, the presidential office shouldn't be operating on her level, should it?
[ Reply | Options ]are you high? it's not the presidential office, it's the dnc. and i don't see what you quoted as dirty politics or a smear campaign. it's all fact.
[ Reply | Options ]didn't realize it was the dnc. That is exactly who should be sending out this stuff. I had my panties in a twist when I thought it was another instance of overreaching, akin to the WH press office lashing out at Edmunds when it criticized the auto bailout program.
[ Reply | Options ]fact? it is interpretation and it is beneath the office of the president. Remember? New politics? Not the same old Washington crap?
[ Reply | Options ]np: would anybody dispute this? That she made that false death panels statement and that the claim was then widely covered by the media? "this is the person who coined the term "Death Panels" -- and opened the flood gates for months of false attacks by special interests and partisan extremists. Whatever lie comes next will be widely covered by the media, then constantly echoed by right-wing attack groups and others who are trying to defeat reform."

[-]Any Nyack moms on? We're really interested in moving there with our two dcs, but I've heard the public schools can be hit or miss (as I'm sure they are everywhere) - any input on which are considered really good? Also, is the commute as bad as everyone says? TIA!
6 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]-
We live very close to Nyack (Bergen co. NJ) and yes the commute IS bad...so much so that we are seriously considering moving back to the city! (We have a 9 y.o and 2 y.o) Love Nyack but as for the schools don't know much, have heard they're not great -- unsure how reliable that is though, such a cute town...how old are your dcs? Where are you living now?
[ Reply | Options ]OP. Thanks, sorry didn't see this until now. We're moving from out of state but dh is from NY and we were living in NYC for a long time before our 1st dc was born. We have a 3 and 5 yo. I've been debating between Brooklyn (Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens) and Nyack but really would love a more natural setting, which is why I chose Nyack. We'd do public schools but I would like for them to be good-diverse is great but academics are also important. Ugh. Anyone want to choose for us? ;)

two years ago they were still giving percentiles. did you pay for the additional consultation to get the score? was that IQ (very high, congratulations!) or sum of scaled score (still very nice result)
[ Reply | Options ]yes. paid for the consult. don't have it in front of me, but I think it must have been the sum of the scaled score. I don't think psych gave us an actual IQ, but she did say she didn't think it was an accurate # anyway because dc hit the ceiling in one of the subtests and you needed some previous version of the SB to get a better idea

[-]3 year-old DC has a hard time participating in soccer class. He either runs around or comes running back to me. Any thoughts on how to get him more with the program? He doesn't have this prob. with school. Doing great at school and seems to follow teacher direction well. Any thoughts? I had also taken him to a Music Together class and the same thing happened. I got so tired of chasing after him that I stopped going. Am a bit thrustrated spending money on classes and watching him not participate. Any input most appreciated.
10 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]He's 3. Why is it so important to you that he do soccer or music? He's already in preschool and doing well there. That's enough for this age.
[ Reply | Options ]-
This is totally typical of 3 yos. The ones who you feel like are always participating have either taken soccer already or are just into it for this session. They can bounce all over in their desire to participate. Just keep going because you paid and some days dc will play and some days they won't.
[ Reply | Options ]Two options: 1) decide he's too young for it and hold off for 6 months or a year. If that doesn't work, then 2) don't watch. I tell my son that if he can't do it without me, then I need to leave and I stand outside the classroom after handing him off to the instructor. It's worked wonders and now I can watch again.
[ Reply | Options ]This is quite typical of 3 y.o. boys. Short attention span, distractable. If he's enjoying himself during these classes, I think it's still money well-spent.
[ Reply | Options ]Thanks for the advice. He does seem to enjoy himself whether he's running around or sitting out with me and watching. Always seems to make it back in time for the last goal and stickers. The coaches don't seem to mind that he's running around and they've been very good at trying to redirect him.
[ Reply | Options ]
I don't think any 3yo will particpate for the whole class. My ds took soccer at 3 and the kids were lying down in the middle of the game, wandering off to play together, etc. It's more, IMO, for the social experience and exposure to team play than anything else. If he's not engaging at all then maybe you should wait, but if he's just taking a break every once in awhile, then I think that is normal and expected.

[-]Playdate etiquette question: My 3 yr old dd has just been invited for her fisrt playdate from a classmate. (1) I live all the way up in washington Heights so how do I ask if it can be done at their house. (2) Would my nanny drop her off and I pick up (I work) or would she stay the whole time? (which she would not want to do). Tia.
15 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]I usually say how about your house this time and ours the next if you want it there. At 3 yo your nanny should stay esp bcse it's the first playdate. She shouldn't not want to do this, imo because it's part of her job and also bcse she should be there to help supervise and also make sure that the environment is ok. 3 is too young for drop offs anyway.
[ Reply | Options ]OP here, I should have mentioned that my nanny is also my aunt so we both take liberties (she prefers watching dd at her house in the Bronx so pretty much only goes from point A to point B, but I come home late sometimes, etc.) I just know she would be really huffy about not being able to go home, she's kindof lazy.
[ Reply | Options ]
I agree with OR--your nanny doesn't have a choice. She needs to stay at the playdate, and why should it be a big deal for her? My babysitter goes on lots of playdates--it's part of her job. She brings books, or homework to do, or her laptop.
[ Reply | Options ]-
You can't drop off a 3 yo! Too young! 3 yos can be high maintenance -- need help resolving conflicts, diaper or potty issues, emotionally unpredictable -- and you can't expect a classmate's parent or sitter to take care of her. You pay your sitter, she needs to stay there. No problem asking if it could be done at the other person's more convenient home.
