    • Interesting, all of these income questions. I would LOVE to move back to NYC but DH thinks we need 400-500k b/c he doesn't want to feel poor in NY. We live on 200k now in an inexpensive southern city. Both former NYers <LI>. He said, just visit. Sigh.

    • It depends on how you define comfortably I suppose. We live in a very small apartment, take "vacations" to family, buy clothing on sale at Gap, ON, etc. Just normal stuff!

    • You don't live in the prime area. NYC on under 100K per family means outside Manhattan (except, maybe Inwood, or Wash. Heights), or people who have "help" from parents, or who don't mind accumulating a GREAT deal of debt.

          • East 90s is full of projects. Right by the FDR, granted, but there are some expensive apt buildings very nearby. I know someone who lived in the rental at the corner of 92nd and FDR. Paid over 5k a month for a 2 bedroom that looked right out at the projects.

    • I think it depends on a lot of things. For example, 100K w 1 WOHP and 1 SAHP and 1 dc is very different from 2 WOHP and 2 dcs needing childcare. Living in smaller apartment or an apartment that was bought a while back when prices were more reasonable. Or maybe a rental deal or an inherited apartment. Some people's idea of comfortable is a lot more frugal too. Although we now make more than that, as one example we don't go on vacations that much and when we do it's often frequent flyer miles, a friend's house, etc. - many people don't want to give that up, whereas for us, it's not something we think about.

    • We bargain shop for just about everything. I own one pair of Manolo's and I bought them from a second hand store. Size 10s. Can you believe it. LOL. We do or at least did public school. My kids are in college now and expensive ones at that. Yikes! My husband has his own company, but I did work before the new baby, and my rule was I never took a job that did not offer health benefits. We park out 15 year old truck which was a hand-me-down from my MIL in a garage in queens which costs 100 dollars per month. We take it out when we need it. We rarely take vacations and when we do they are usually to LA to do business also or Hawaii as my in-laws have a home there. We use the frequent flyer miles my husband gets from his business AMEX.

        • Washington Heights, Inwood, Roosevelt Island, pretty much anywhere in the Bronx, Staten Island, and Queens (with exceptions), many parts of Brooklyn.

        • Most people living in affordable neighborhoods are okay with the school they are zoned for.

        • That isn't entirely true and unfortunately people see one "bad school" or take that book on schools as gospel and assume all schools are bad in say Bed Stuy, when it is not always the case. But, I tell people to keep an open mind but always do what they think is best for their child.

    • You don't need a fancy address in a fancy building. You don't need a BB with 10,000 minutes, you don't need premium cable. We live in an outerborough and are quite happy there. I think it's ridiculous to say that you can't live well in NYC unless you have $$$.

    • At 95k a year dh and I live in Brooklyn, not really because we have to, but because chose to long ago. We are one stop from Manhattan, it takes me 20 mins to get to the office by train. We don't own a car (but are looking to purchase one used) but have zip car currently. One child, not in school yet, but I am OK with our PS and hope to be 'hands on'. We have a local babysitter for the days I do work, $12/hr. We vacation to see family in New England and Europe with the occasional 'real vacation'. We occasionally splurge on designer bags or clothes but shop on sale. Our apt is lovely and we have a charming home. It pretty much comes down to your mortgage or rent and how you were raised. We are just not flashy by nature and we are sensible peo...
